Virtue Names

I was wondering about virtue names. I’m not really a fan of the super common ones, but I think they could be cute. However, I’ve seen a lot of people say they have a problem with virtue names, because they feel like it puts too much pressure on the kid, or they worry that the kid won’t be able to live up to the meaning of their name. I’m looking for a few things.

  • Thoughts on virtue names.
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • Suggestions for both boys and girls virtue names.

I do mean actually virtue names, like [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_m]Chance[/name_m], [name_m]Noble[/name_m], [name_m]Legend[/name_m], or [name_m]Valor[/name_m]. I don’t necessarily want names that just mean something virtuous for this. I also don’t want the extremely common ones, like the ones I listed, especially for girls. Note that if used, these would all be middle names.

Thanks in advance.

These were popular in the 16th Century in the US

[name_f]Charity[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Temperance[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Mercy[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Thankful[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Deliverance[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Love[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Silence[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]Submitt

[name_f]Silence[/name_f] and Submitt aren’t my favourite, because it feels like people would only name their daughters that in an attempt to oppress them, but the rest are lovely, thank you so much.

I feel like [name_f]Constance[/name_f] is more common and so lovely! Also [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] nn ‘Pru’!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Verity[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Amity[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Serenity[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Clemency[/name_f]

I really like [name_f]Constance[/name_f] and [name_f]Amity[/name_f].

I love[name_f][/name_f] a good virtue name, but pretty much only the ones with a positive meaning. [name_m]Like[/name_m] you said, the idea of names that one would only use on a girl that have an undercurrent of oppression and the expectance of submission really make me uncomfortable. But[name_f][/name_f] there are some virtue names that I do think are especially lovely.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]The[/name_m] most of these I think lean gender neutral, but there are a few that I prefer for a girl or boy (mainly [name_f]Hero[/name_f] for a girl, [name_f]Bliss[/name_f] for a boy)

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Beloved[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Hero[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Merit[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Pleasance[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Winsome[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Worthy[/name_m]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Vision[/name_m]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Bliss[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_f]Bravery[/name_f] (as in the bravery to be kind)
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Earnest[/name_m]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Fate[/name_m]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Noble[/name_m]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

A few of these I think might lean a bit heavy (Hero, [name_f]Pleasance[/name_f], Prudence), but the most of them I love for their positive meanings. Personally, I lean more towards virtue names that would be more associated with the parent (their child is [name_f]Beloved[/name_f], they felt like [name_m]Fate[/name_m] brought them their child, etc) or a positive quality the child has innately (always being [name_m]Worthy[/name_m] of love, the child being a [name_m]Vision[/name_m] or a Marvel). :white_heart:

I love [name_f]Marvel[/name_f], [name_m]Worthy[/name_m], and [name_m]Noble[/name_m], thanks!

I personally love virtue names. I tend to prefer ones that I hope for the child to have rather than what I hope for the child to be (i.e. I hope my child will have [name_f]Peace[/name_f] but I don’t necessarily want them to be peaceful or I hope that my child would give themselves and others grace not necessarily be graceful)

Sorry for any repeats

I think it’s nice, to tie good qualities to someone. [name_f]My[/name_f] name (Kellie) means “warrior woman”, and that’s definitely been encouraging and inspiring to me. (“I can do this [name_f][/name_f]- I’m a warrior woman!”)

[name_f][/name_f]

This brings me to me next thought: [name_m]You[/name_m] can name a child after all kinds of virtues without actually using the virtue itself as the name. While I’m not against names like [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] or [name_f]Joy[/name_f], you can also use names like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] or [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] that mean those same virtues. [name_m]Not[/name_m] a rule, but definitely an option.

That’s definitely an option, and it’s actually one I’ve considered, I just wanted to see what people had to offer in regards to solid virtue names.
