hi! my two favourite girl names are vivien and scarlett, i think they are so beautiful individually but i am worried about possibly using them together if i had two girls due to the gone with the wind association, while i do like that movie i wouldn’t say im a huge fan and i don’t want people to think i named my hypothetically daughters that because i love the movie. do you think that i could use both for two girls without that association being super obvious? it is a very old movie and i am not planning on having children anytime soon so do you think that it might be useable? thank you <3
[name_u]Vivien[/name_u] is one of my favourite [name_f]English[/name_f] names too.
I don’t think it’s a definite no… It is a very old movie but also one of the most famous movies of all time, and continually gets brought up because of its problematic elements. If I met someone with a [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] with those specific spellings, rather than Vivian/Vivienne or [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f], I would personally assume it was a tribute to the film. However, that is not to say everyone would have the same immediate association. Might be worth doing a poll?
Ooh this is tricky!
I did think Gone with the Wind it’s a classic film that has lots of troubling elements reflective of the time. I would say it’s a controversial film so maybe you wouldn’t want your children’s names to be strongly associated with this film. However I agree with @persephonescrown its an old film and I think some spelling changes would help differentiate from the film maybe [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] + [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] would be better?
The movie is such a staple that I think, yes, the connection between these two names is quite apparent!
However, since they are your favorites, I say they’re usable! Using names you love and loving names you use is a special thing, and regardless of associations, these names work together and mean something to you.
So, I’ve never seen the movie but know of it and know vaguely that these names are linked to it (more so [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] than Vivien), however, if I met sisters [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], I wouldn’t assume it was because of that However, maybe I’m not so reliable as I’m not a movie fan
Maybe altering the [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] spelling (Vivienne or Vivian??)
I know I’ve seen the movie, but it was so long ago that I don’t remember the names of the characters and didn’t make that association at all. In fact, my first thought was how stylistically matched they are together and what great sisters they would be! Both [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] are popular names (#14 and #103) so most people likely have other associations with each name as well. If it helps, I actually know siblings named [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] (adults) and another set named [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (young children) and after the initial shock of those names being put together, it kind of just became their identities and the association didn’t feel so ‘in your face’ anymore. I definitely don’t think [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] are that tied together!
I think you couldn’t get away with [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], or [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Melanie[/name_f], but, honestly, I think most [name_f]Gen[/name_f] Z and below will think of [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] Johannsen rather than [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] O’Hara, and I don’t think anyone under 45 remembers [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] [name_u]Leigh[/name_u]. You could change to the [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] spelling, but if you love the names, keep them!
[name_u]True[/name_u] story: I’d always wanted to name my first daughter [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] after a Welsh girl I babysat. (It’s also an honor name for Sofie-Katarine.) So my first child was a girl, and I named her [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]. Then my son is named after my late grandfather, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. I’m standing at the bus stop in downtown Vancouver BC and I’m talking to my kids and the guy next to me says, “You must really love [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] Thomas.” I’d completely forgotten that [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] Thomas’s wife was [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]! So it doesn’t really matter, does it, in the end of things? Both my kids love their names. That’s what matters.
