We are almost 25 weeks pregnant with our baby boy and are still trying to come up with a name. My husband admitted to me that he hasn’t felt like we found THE name. Essentially he is waiting for tears when he tries on THE wedding gown, know what I mean? Anyhow, our current list is below. Would love to hear your thoughts and other name suggestions. Our last name is one of the most common in the US, beginning with T.
With an extremely common last name (which I will think of as [name]Thompson[/name]), I imagine you’d want a relatively uncommon first to help him stand out and be googleable.
[name]Birch[/name]: certainly unique, clipped and masculine. It’s a nice nature name with good wintery imagery. Would need to be paired with a longer, classic middle (i.e. [name]Birch[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Thompson[/name]).
[name]Elliot[/name]: more and more popular, with a studious and quiet vibe. Would not use, in general, names that end with -t given that “[name]Thompson[/name]” starts with one.
[name]Harris[/name]: A last name that’s less common than ‘[name]Thompson[/name]’ will work [otherwise people can confuse first and last names]. It’s also dignified and masculine.
[name]Miles[/name]: again, a name rising in popularity, but which is quirky, cool and has centuries of history.
[name]Wes[/name]: the only name on your list I don’t care for, as it feels very incomplete. Prefer [name]Weston[/name] or similar (unless your last name really is [name]Thompson[/name], in which case any -n name is out).
Thanks, [name]Blade[/name], and indeed our last name is [name]Thompson[/name]. So any first name ending in -on just does not seem to sound right. My husband is more on the traditional side but does like [name]Birch[/name] and I really like your suggestion of [name]Birch[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]. I hadn’t thought of that and it sounds great. I’ve added it to the list.
Thanks a ton for the suggestions. I will run these by the hubs. =)
Have you considered [name]Wesley[/name] or [name]Westley[/name] instead of just [name]Thompson[/name]? Other ideas that come to mind based on your list:
Thanks, alzora! Yes, [name]Westley[/name] would be more likely but I don’t think I am completely sold on [name]Wes[/name] anyhow.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Dex[/name] (and [name]Dax[/name]) but hubs nixed both.
The surname as a first name is not really my style. [name]Harris[/name] is only a contender because my husband’s father was [name]Harold[/name]. [name]Harris[/name] is my way of honoring him.
I like [name]Wes[/name] a lot. I’ve thought of constructing a new name out of [name]Wes[/name] and [name]Scott[/name] (dad’s name) and making Wescott. I probably wouldn’t use it because I like “real” names, but [name]Wes[/name] is a dashing nickname. [name]West[/name] is another option, though it does have a slightly different vibe. I think [name]Weston[/name] is my favorite formal version.
On a whole, I don’t love nature names but I make an exception for the name [name]Lake[/name]. You might like it if you like [name]Birch[/name], though it does feel slightly more feminine.
[name]Elliot[/name] and [name]Harris[/name] feel not very exciting to me, but I love [name]Miles[/name]. I like [name]Milo[/name] even a tiny bit more, but [name]Miles[/name] is so gentle and handsome.
[name]Blade[/name] had a bunch of great recommendations, but I’ll try a few more:
[name]Eamon[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Jones[/name]
[name]Sterling[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Birch[/name] - do not like this at all
[name]Elliot[/name] - love this one!
[name]Harris[/name] - its an ok name
[name]Miles[/name] - love it!
[name]Wes[/name] - to nicknamey
