I’m not sure what has come over me, but I can’t shake the idea of naming our little boy [name]Watson[/name]. My husbands thinks I’ve absolutely lost my mind. He sees [name]Watson[/name] as a super nerd name, and he can’t let go of the recent popularity of the [name]Sherlock[/name] [name]Holmes[/name] movies where he thinks people would assume we got [name]Watson[/name] from.
But to me, [name]Watson[/name] is quirky and has a sort of subtle strength/masculinity to it… I mean, the name itself means “powerful warrior”.
I don’t know, maybe I am off my rocker… So, lay it on me. What are your opinions/thoughts/impressions of [name]Watson[/name] for a first name?
Ok, call me mad, but these were my initial thoughts:
[name]Sherlock[/name]. Not a bad association, but it’s a surname (I dislike surname names, sorry)
[name]Emma[/name] [name]Watson[/name]. Again, with the surname. Adds femininity to it though. Kind of.
Wotsits (yum). Not an issue outside of the UK.
I find, as with most surname names, it makes the whole name sound like a business: [name]Watson[/name] [name]Jones[/name], [name]Watson[/name] [name]Smith[/name] etc
“Him over there, Whatsit.”
What’s on? Going by your username, I’ll assume the surname is [name]Carroll[/name]. Now it sounds like “What’s on, [name]Carol[/name]?”
And it means powerful warrior? Huh. I thought it meant ‘son of Wat’. Anyway, after all that I personally don’t think it is usable
Yes yes a thousand times yes. I adore [name]Watson[/name]. It’s quirky and strong and scholarly without being stuffy. A natural brother for [name]Arthur[/name] or [name]Matilda[/name].
Thank you ladies for the feedback! It is greatly appreciated!
Scarletrune & Charlieandperry1-- According to nameberry, [name]Watson[/name] means “powerful warrior”, that’s where that came from. It could very well be wrong, I don’t know. I’m not a name expert by any means, but again that’s what I found on nameberry.
I never look up name meanings on here because I find that whenever I look one up, it’s wrong. BehindtheName is my go-to site. Wikipedia is usually pretty good, too.
I have a tendency not to like surnames for first names, but I actually love [name]Watson[/name]. I can’t put my finger on it why it has such appeal to me, but maybe it’s because I like [name]Weston[/name] and it has the same feel of the name to me.
Thank you all for you input! I really appreciate you all taking the time to write down your thoughts/impressions.
It looks as though it’s one of those names that are either loved or hated, not a whole lot in between. That definitely gives me something to think about…
I really like [name]Watson[/name] - it’s quirky and strong and has good allusions. My one concern is the lack of nickname potential but that might not be a concern for you.
From today’s “almost unique names” I decided to see what names in my state were given to only 5 kids last year and was surprised to see there were 5 Watsons born in my state in 2012.
I like it. It reminds me of [name]Sherlock[/name].
Lol. As lazy as I feel pretty much agreeing with CandP all the time, she summed up everything I could have said exactly. Seems CharlieandPerry becomes CopyandPaste when it comes to me
