So my dads name is [name_m]David[/name_m] and he and I have very similar personalities. [name_m]David[/name_m] was also the name of my favorite college professor. I was looking for a non-overt way to honor both of them without offending the rest of my family members. My parents aren’t together and though I spent most of my childhood with my mother, me and my dad are so similar personality wise, I get along with him much better than other members of my family.
I was thinking [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] which means “son of [name_m]David[/name_m]” but I wonder if Dawsons Creek tainted the name? Titanic also propelled the name to popularity but I think Dawsons Creek had a permanent dent on the name.
Looking for suggestions form some creative berries out there.
Thank you to all who respond
I like [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] for you. I think it is a great way to honor a [name_m]David[/name_m]…in your case two Davids. You could also use [name_m]Davis[/name_m] or [name_m]Davidson[/name_m].
I don’t think that [name_m]Dawson[/name_m]'s Creek tainted the name [name_m]Dawson[/name_m]! I don’t see [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] as being overly tied to any one reference.
It might be too much of a stretch or just too much name, but [name_m]Ovid[/name_m] came to mind as a way to honor [name_m]David[/name_m].
[name_m]David[/name_m] means “beloved” according to Behind the Name, which isn’t an uncommon meaning. Maybe search for other names with that meaning and see if you like any?
@lovemysweeties I like [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] as well, but I just can;t shake the association to Dawsons Creek as I was a huge fan of the show.
@nono Thanks for the comfort with [name_m]Dawson[/name_m]… [name_f]Amy[/name_f] and Esmee are actually two female names I like that mean “beloved” but I’m not sure if any of them will make the final cut. It is interesting that you mentioned that because I just came across the name [name_f]Amabel[/name_f] which means “lovable” so that could work.
For the boys I am not a fan of [name_u]Darrell[/name_u], and [name_m]Philbert[/name_m] is the name of a family friend that i dislike so that is out as well… The only one I like seems to be [name_m]Erasmus[/name_m] which I think is very out there. [name_m]Ovid[/name_m] is an interesting way to honor [name_m]David[/name_m], thanks for that.
I love the idea of [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] to honor a [name_m]David[/name_m]. I’m not sure what [name_m]Dawson[/name_m]'s Creek is, so obviously I don’t think it’s tainted the name.
Side note: Holy cow! I just looked at the stats for [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] and it jumped from #734 in 1997 to #175 in 1998. I had no idea Titanic had that effect on the name?? [name_m]Dawson[/name_m]'s popularity is currently on the decline though. I can’t believe I’ve never met anyone named [name_m]Dawson[/name_m].
@Southernmaple… thanks I love [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] as well.
[name_m]Dawson[/name_m]'s Creek was a popular series on the WB around the time of [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls etc… It was a popular teenage drama.
I agree with you on the drastic rise in popularity which shocked me as well, but I think it was a combination of Titanic and Dawsons Creek as that show premiered in 1998. I’ve never met anyone named [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] either, but it is a bit popular for my liking. I still love it though
I like [name_u]Davin[/name_u]. [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] is a good idea too.
In terms of honoring your father, maybe you could do it in a more subtle way - think of something he liked, something you associate with him. If he liked music, hunting, sports, whatever - maybe you can come up with a name that calls him to mind for you, but won’t set off alarm bells to the rest of your family. Same with your professor - maybe there’s a name connected with the class he taught you?
I like [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] as well and I think that the Dawsons Creek connection is not that bad since the show doesn’t run any more and most people even don’t remember it any more
Another possibility would be [name_m]Daoud[/name_m] which would be an arabic version of [name_m]David[/name_m]
Since [name_m]Dawson[/name_m]'s Creek isn’t a popular show today I don’t think the show will taint the name. I adore [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] and it’s on my own list. It’s a great way to honor both [name_m]David[/name_m]'s.
I don’t think [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] has been tainted by the show. I do know a [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] (age 13). [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Davis[/name_m], as suggested above?
I’m in a similar situation - not a fan of [name_m]Ovid[/name_m]. [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] sounds nice. Others I’ve thought about are [name_m]Davis[/name_m], [name_u]Davin[/name_u], [name_m]Davian[/name_m], and [name_m]Davidson[/name_m].
@spring13 [name_u]Davin[/name_u] is also a good one Thank you for the creative ideas. My dad is also a huge fan of game shows and sports; We would watch [name_m]Bob[/name_m] [name_m]Barker[/name_m], [name_m]Novak[/name_m] Djokovic etc every weekday when he would come visit so I also associate that with him. I’ll think about that for my professor as well.
@little_billie [name_m]Daoud[/name_m] is really cool, I like that. It’s great to hear that Dawsons Creek won’t be a strong association these days.
@erin91 ditto on hearing it isn’t as strong an association these days. Your feedback is appreciated…
@hixtwin I’m happy to hear that in the younger age group, the name isn’t as tainted; However, if my maths is correct your friend was born at the height of popularity of the show (I feel sooo old now and I’m mid twenties). [name_m]Davis[/name_m] is a lovely suggestion, it’s just that I was looking for something a little more covert so my other family members won’t feel left out. But thank you for your lovely feedback
@elixir103 I agree with you, [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] sounds good which is why it was my first (and only) thought at the beginning. Also, thank you for the other suggestions!
@beatrixdaisy Thank for the feedback I appreciate it!
@Katemp91 I like [name_m]Davey[/name_m] (even if only for a nickname) and strangely enough it is sooo obvious an honor name that I never even thought of.
Also (in general), I like that Dawsons Creek put the name on the map as now I’m not worried about it being a new unisex name in the style of other -son names that seem to be trendy nowadays.
You could just use the first letter of the name (a Hebrew naming tradition). For example, my friend’s grandfather was [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] and she named her son [name_m]Silas[/name_m] to honor him. I did this as well for my older daughter. [name_m]Both[/name_m] her names are family names but her initials were also the same as my beloved grandma (from [name_f]Iva[/name_f] [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] to [name_f]India[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]). I will say that most people make the obvious connection that [name_f]India[/name_f] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] are family connections but don’t see how I honored my grandmother with the initial (but anyone who is Jewish gets it). That’s ok because I know all the people I honored with her name. I just say that because if you use [name_m]David[/name_m] it will be obvious that you honored your dad (and you can say your professor too) but that has pros/cons. It might only be a few people that get you were trying to honor your dad with the initial but maybe that’s a good thing :). And of course you can always tell your dad. And this opens up all"D" names to you! Best of luck!
