Berries, I have a problem. I need a way to honor the name [name]Doris[/name]. I love my grandmother, but I can’t bestow that name upon a child. I can’t use her middle name, which is also mine([name]May[/name]), because of 150 year tradition that I am not willing to break. So, if you could please help me, it would be much appreciated. (:
Note
I’m not pregnant, just looking for a name to give to a future human being(:
Or search for names with a similar meaning as [name]Doris[/name] or something that includes Doors in it’s meaning like I think [name]January[/name] or [name]Janus[/name] does.
There’s [name]Carys[/name], [name]Lois[/name], [name]Maris[/name] & [name]Paris[/name], but my favourite way to honour [name]Doris[/name] would have to be [name]Iris[/name], or [name]Morris[/name]/[name]Morrison[/name] on a boy
[name]Dorothy[/name] and [name]Dorothea[/name] are pretty names. I am honestly surprised that [name]Dorothy[/name] has not come back! With the huge popularity of three syllable names ending in y, most of which sound tired now, I think it’s a ripe for return.
[name]Andorra[/name]
[name]Doriana[/name]
[name]Dorota[/name]
[name]Dorset[/name]
[name]Dorsey[/name]
[name]Isadora[/name] (I see a pp also suggested this)
[name]Medora[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name]
[name]Teodora[/name]
I think something like [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Alice[/name] is a specular way to honor [name]Doris[/name].
Or since [name]Doris[/name] is the name of one of The Nereides…
[name]Eudora[/name] - The Nereid of the “fine gifts” or the sea
Galateia - The Nereid of “the milky white” sea-foam.
[name]Calypso[/name] - [name]One[/name] of the Nereides, “the concealed one.”
[name]Thaleia[/name] - The Nereid of the “blooming” sea.
Panopeia - The Nereid of the sea’s “panorama.”
Dynamene - The Nereid of the sea’s “power.”
Dexamene - [name]One[/name] of the Nereides, “of the strength of the right hand.”
Amphinome - A Nereid of the sea’s bounty, literally “she of the surrounding pasture.”
Psamathe - The Nereis “goddess of sand.”
Thanks for the help! I do like [name]Dorothea[/name]/[name]Dorothy[/name], [name]Isadora[/name], and [name]Theodora[/name]. [name]Dora[/name] is just a bit too…explorer, still, thanks y’all! (:
Could you use [name]Doris[/name] as a middle? It could still honor your grandmother but you could choose something else for the first name? [name]Doris[/name] could be a spunky middle name in my opinion.
I’m sorry, but as much as I love my Grandmother, I hate her name. Probably with a passion.
If it helps: Her mother’s name is [name]Emma[/name], dad is [name]David[/name], sister is [name]Darlene[/name], and her brother was [name]David[/name]…
My best friend just went thru this with her new baby girl! Her grandmothers name is [name]Doris[/name], and she desperately wanted to honor her, but hated the name itself.
She went thru sooo many names, but ended up going with [name]Dori[/name]-[name]Snow[/name].
She has the [name]Doris[/name] sound in it, and Dori, but definitely made it modern by adding [name]Snow[/name].
She goes by [name]Snow[/name], and she couldn`t be cuter!
I would rather my name be [name]Doris[/name] than [name]Dorothy[/name] which to me has the same qualities as [name]Doris[/name]. Neither [name]Dorothy[/name] nor [name]Doris[/name] sounds particularly fresh or modern.
I do like [name]Theodore[/name] for a boy. I think it could still honor grandma [name]Doris[/name].
I like the sea Nymph idea. I also like any of the names associated with the sea. [name]Marina[/name], [name]Maris[/name], [name]Marie[/name], [name]Oceane[/name], etc.
Maybe your grandma had a hobby or a interest you could honor. If she liked cats, [name]Catalina[/name]. If she liked roses, [name]Rose[/name]. If she had a movie she liked, a character in that movie.
Rhodora
[name]Pandora[/name]
[name]Dorothy[/name] (I like the nn [name]Dot[/name])
Apparently in Greek mythology [name]Doris[/name] was a sea nymph, so any name having to do with the ocean could work.
What about [name]Ianthe[/name], [name]Mira[/name], [name]Kai[/name], [name]Marisol[/name], [name]Niamh[/name], [name]Morgan[/name], or [name]Meredith[/name]? All of these names have meanings or histories that deal with the ocean.
