Etta [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] would be a nice way to honor your grandma
My Gramma is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] too!
She went by [name_f]Marge[/name_f] or [name_f]Margie[/name_f] when she lived up north… and when she moved to the south she decided(?) to switch to [name_f]Peg[/name_f] and [name_f]Peggy[/name_f]… we always know it’s an old friend when they call and ask to speak to [name_f]Margie[/name_f] lol…
If you don’t like nicknamey names then [name_f]Marge[/name_f] and [name_f]Peg[/name_f] may not work for you…
I love the suggestions of [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], and then there are so many beautiful ways to honor [name_f]Ann[/name_f]/Anne… maybe [name_f]Annalise[/name_f], [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], or [name_f]Hannah[/name_f].
I would definitely say [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. Or perhaps you could honor her with her middle name [name_f]Ann[/name_f](e)?
What about ANYA PEARL?
Daisy and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] would be my favorite ways to honor a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]! Or maybe her initials? Something like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Anouk[/name_f] or [name_f]Milena[/name_f] [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] or [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] [name_f]Alouette[/name_f] or [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] would be a nice way to honor her too!
Or even an international form like [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] or [name_f]Margarida[/name_f] or [name_f]Marit[/name_f]?
Good luck!
Greta is absolutely darling, spunky, & stylish. Personally I think it’s the perfect name to honor a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
I also like the suggestion of using her middle name [name_f]Ann[/name_f](e) and using names with [name_f]Ann[/name_f] in it for a first name: [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Annelise[/name_f], etc. Or just having [name_f]Ann[/name_f](e) as the middle name with your choice of the first name.
Another suggestion would be honoring her with her birth month if she was born in [name_f]April[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_u]August[/name_u]? Or by her surname or maiden name?
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I wanted to honor his mother but unfortunately felt we couldn’t use any of her names as we didn’t really love them. Therefore, we named our daughter using my MIL’s grandmother’s name and it meant the world to my MIL, who was the original person we wanted to honor. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time I hear my MIL say our daughter’s name, I can tell how special it is to her. I share this in case you wanted to think of another name that just as much honors your grandmother without using [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
Perhaps combining [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] into [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] / [name_f]Mariann[/name_f] / [name_f]Maryanne[/name_f] / [name_f]Maryann[/name_f]
Another possibility could be thinking outside the box with this honor name… Perhaps her birthplace or where she considered “home” could be a name? [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], [name_f]Carolina[/name_f], [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] - for example. Cities or counties sometimes make lovely names too. If she had a favorite flower, gem, color, something like that may work - And all of this is only if you don’t find a name associated with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_u]Anne[/name_u] that strikes you
So many replies, thank you everyone!
@Greyblue I love [name_u]Marian[/name_u], very [name_u]Robin[/name_u] Hood and they lived near [name_m]Sherwood[/name_m] [name_u]Forest[/name_u] for a period of time. [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Amabel[/name_f] are lovely too.
@namefan I like [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] but I think realistically everyone in the family would just end up saying [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and misreading it.
@mololy I do like [name_f]Mary[/name_f], especially as a middle, and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] is lovely. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is a little cutesy for my tastes, though I do see the appeal, especially for the assignment I’ve given everyone.
@Alaina27 [name_u]Marie[/name_u] is a great option as it’s a family name on both sides. [name_f]Martha[/name_f] is lovely too!
@Genevieve101 I can’t use [name_f]Margot[/name_f]/Margaux due to family connection. [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is lovely to say but I think would be mispronounced all the time.
@kidpix21 Thanks for so many options, I hadn’t thought about a lengthier [name_f]Ann[/name_f]- name like [name_f]Annika[/name_f]. I also like [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f].
@wilkie8709 I unfortunately can’t use [name_f]Etta[/name_f] (lovely name) as I’m an [name_f]Emma[/name_f], way too similar! [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] isn’t my taste. I love both [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] though.
@K_at I think [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] might be the way to go! I already had it on my longlist and seeing it a lot has helped me think it might be right. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] is lovely too though I know so many already.
@readingclaygirl If I can work out which spelling it was! [name_f]May[/name_f] have to embarrassingly phone up Mum to ask.
@Rhettagain [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] combo, thanks so much!
@ashthedreamer [name_f]Greta[/name_f] is definitely my close second to [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] at the moment. [name_m]Will[/name_m] look into some initials - possibly [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f].
@awmwl She was born in [name_f]April[/name_f] so that is an option I hadn’t thought of. If only she was born in [name_u]June[/name_u]! Am not a fan of surnames as firsts and her surnames are very surnamey, unfortunately. Her parents’ names were lovely ([name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m]) but both very popular and names have to pass the teacher test, can see both [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m]/Charlie getting ruined!
@Elle1 I do like [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] and hadn’t thought about it before people brought it up. We’re [name_f]English[/name_f] and she was raised in [name_m]Dorset[/name_m] which isn’t my style of name, though is a lovely area of the country!
Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I’m going to go away and ponder but I think my front runners are [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]? [name_u]Noa[/name_u]/Lia/Nellie for short?
How about a combo of mar and [name_f]Ann[/name_f] so
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
Or even
[name_f]Marla[/name_f]
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Martina[/name_f] ([name_f]Martie[/name_f])
[name_f]Mariella[/name_f] (love)
Melanie
Marnie or [name_f]Marni[/name_f]
Marina-Sort of like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f](e)
I think [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] or [name_f]May[/name_f] would be lovely. I agree with @K_at some form of [name_f]Ann[/name_f] would also be nice.
Since [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] means pearl, anything that shares that meaning could be a great honor name! I see that most of my favorite “pearl” names are on here already… ([name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Rita[/name_f]). So I’ll suggest some other honor names for [name_f]Ann[/name_f](e):
Annelise
[name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]
[name_f]Annette[/name_f]
[name_f]Nancy[/name_f]
[name_f]Marinette[/name_f] (a stretch maybe but it starts with an M and means “of the sea”)
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f]/Marian
[name_f]Annabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Annais[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Angela[/name_f]
@anon25197097 I’m not a fan of [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] but can’t work out why, there’s nothing objectively wrong with it. I like [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. [name_f]Mariella[/name_f] is lovely too.
@anon68906791 I like [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f]! [name_f]May[/name_f] is lovely too.
@anon47024950 [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] is okay but something feels a little short with it.
@Summs I’m inclined to agree - either [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f] or a longer [name_f]Ann[/name_f]- name.
@Megan_Noelle Thanks for all the [name_f]Ann[/name_f] names. I like [name_f]Annelise[/name_f] and Anatasia in particular.
I like [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] would be beautiful!
Anneliese [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is dreamy!! This post is 4 months old. What did you end up choosing?
I know you said you don’t like nickname-y names, but what about [name_f]Madge[/name_f]? It’s a really rare nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and more common for [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]/Margery, but it still works.
