Ways to honour William

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries,

I really want to name my future son (not pregnant yet) after my granddad whom I never got to meet. His name was [name_u]William[/name_u] but was called [name_m]Ted[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] problem is I don’t know if I should go with [name_u]William[/name_u] or [name_m]Ted[/name_m]. Maybe even [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]? What are your opinions and I’m open to any other suggestions on how to honour [name_u]William[/name_u].

What about [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u]?

I think [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] would be sweet!

[name_m]Wilson[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilbur[/name_m]
[name_u]Liam[/name_u]
[name_u]Billy[/name_u]
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]

There are so many great options for honoring a [name_u]William[/name_u]! First you can go the most direct route of: [name_m]Wilson[/name_m] (LOVE), [name_m]Willis[/name_m], or [name_m]Wilhelm[/name_m]. Second you could go with names that are derived from [name_m]Ted[/name_m]: [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] or [name_u]Edward[/name_u] are the first 2 that come to mind. Third you could go the same meaning as [name_u]William[/name_u]: [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_m]Ansel[/name_m], or [name_m]Osmond[/name_m] are all awesome! Fourth you could go in a completely different direction and name him after your grandfather’s occupation such as my grandpa was a pastor so we considered the name [name_m]Parson[/name_m] or [name_m]Deacon[/name_m] for our son or my husband’s grandpa was [name_u]John[/name_u] so we considered [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] for our son (which is [name_u]John[/name_u] in Russian), maybe your grandpa had a favorite color, or served in the military, or you could name him after the town your grandpa grew up in. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandpa grew up in a town called [name_m]Kenton[/name_m] so that was a contender for our son’s name as well. You could also use your grandpa’s middle name instead of the first. There are so many fun options when naming after someone special in your family. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Sorry for any repeats!

How about:

[name_m]Willis[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]
[name_u]Liam[/name_u]
[name_m]Ted[/name_m]
[name_u]Theo[/name_u]

Oh, here’s another idea… [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]

The previous posters have mentioned most of the options. I just wanted to say that [name_u]William[/name_u] and [name_m]Ted[/name_m] are both great names to work with.

I love the idea of using [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] to get to Ted/Teddy. It allows you to use an honor name while also assigning the child a unique name of their own. I also love [name_u]Willow[/name_u], [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] for a girl.
