[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone,
[name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted your thoughts - hubby loves the nn “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” but we’d prefer to have a longer name we can shorten. We were going to use [name_f]Elise[/name_f] but this was just used by a relative so that’s off the list. DH doesn’t like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] etc. so my question is can we use [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]? Big brothers name is [name_m]Louis[/name_m], is it too close?
Other names we’ve considered are [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] & [name_f]Emily[/name_f].
[name_f]TIA[/name_f]
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you pronounce [name_m]Louis[/name_m] like [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] or [name_m]Louie[/name_m]?
I suppose that would impact it. Personally I love the name [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] but I think it’s too close.
What about [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]? That’s slightly different but has the same vibe, I think it’s different enough.
Other ways to get [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]:
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellison[/name_u]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_f]Brielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_u]Elia[/name_u]
[name_f]Mayella[/name_f]
[name_f]Melody[/name_f]
[name_f]Arielle[/name_f]
And if it comes down to it, you can just name her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
They’re a bit too close, in my opinion, but it might make a difference if you pronounce [name_m]Louis[/name_m] as loo-ee or loo-is.
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] is a beautiful name - how close is the relative? It may not be that problematic to have two in the family.
They’re a bit close for me, but at the same time, how often are you really going to be saying your children’s names at the same time? I think we often forget that our children are separate people and really only live a very short part of their lives in close proximity (ie in the same house), so it really won’t matter for very long that their names are close. If you really like [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], then just go for it. It also matters how you’re pronouncing [name_m]Louis[/name_m]. If you pronounce is Loo-ee, then the two aren’t that close. If you say it like [name_m]Lewis[/name_m], then [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is a bit close in sound. I do like the above suggestion of [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] if you pronounce it like [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]. Style wise it’s a little more modern than [name_m]Louis[/name_m]/[name_m]Lewis[/name_m] (again, though, they are separate individuals and will be that way the majority of their lives), but does have almost all the same sounds as [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and eliminates the shared “s” sound which I think it the most problematic part as far as the names sounding “too close” goes.
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is too close to [name_m]Louis[/name_m], but one of the classy -elle names might give you the [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] nn: [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f].
I would avoid surnames such as as [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_u]Ellison[/name_u], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], etc for a girl. These do not go well with the classic [name_m]Louis[/name_m].
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] sound terrific together. While there is a slight lilting alliteration, they are very different!
Its too close for me. You can use [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Emily[/name_f] if you want.
Much too close in my opinion - sorry! But there are so many names that can shorten to [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (and some really great options have been suggested)
It depends. Spelling wise, they’re too close. But if [name_m]Louis[/name_m] is pronounced loo-ee then I think they’re fine as a sibset.
I think they are too close (with either pronunciation of [name_m]Louis[/name_m]) but do like a previous poster’s suggestion of [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]!
There’s also
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] could also get to nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
I also want to say I love some of the other names you’ve considered, especially [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]! It would be lovely choice with brother [name_m]Louis[/name_m] if it’s still on the table.
Why not [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]? I mean, it’s not the most obvious choice for a nn, but it does work intuitively for me, and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_m]Louis[/name_m] are perfect together!
I’ve seen a lot of brilliant suggestions for [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (love [name_m]Louis[/name_m] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]!), but I haven’t seen [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] suggested, and I think it works brilliantly. [name_m]Louis[/name_m] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] IS much too close for me, even though I’m a big fan of both.
Good luck!
[name_m]Way[/name_m] too similar
I agree, they’re too close… I really like [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] (don’t love [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] but it’s ok) or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (just have to convince dh who worries they’ll be called [name_f]Liz[/name_f]).
Thank you to everyone for your comments!
I love [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] but I think they’re too close. But there are so many ways to get [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. I have a friend who’s daughter is [name_f]Helen[/name_f] and they call her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
If it helps reassure DH, I’ve never met an [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] whovwent my [name_f]Liz[/name_f], and if you introduced the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] I think it would stick quite easily.
Now what nickname she chooses for herself when she’s older could be a different matter, but as far as other people goes, I doubt [name_f]Liz[/name_f] will get pushed on her.
So, the [name_u]Lou[/name_u]-EE pronunciation would make me say they’re different enough to use together, however the [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] pn is too close to [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] for me. I mean, it could still work, especially if she’s primarily going to be called [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
Maybe [name_f]Ella[/name_f] or [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] or even just [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] on it’s own could work?
For me, it depends on how you say it - is he “loo-ee” or “loo-es”? If you say it like “loo-es” then yes, definitely too close. If you say, “loo-ee” then I think you could get away with it. However, personally I wouldn’t because even being written so similarly annoys me.
I’ve just discovered [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] and am loving it - do you think this is too far of a stretch to get nn ‘[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]’?
