WDYT: Mayfair

Hola Berries!

Inspired by the thread asking about Gwenfair… I think Mayfair is extremely pretty, especially with nn [name]May[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think it’s usable? Does it sound made up? It’s a legit surname; however, that doesn’t matter if other people “think” it’s made up anyway.

What would you think of a little girl named Mayfair? Honest thoughts welcome, but please keep it friendly.

Thanks!

It is cute with the nn [name]May[/name]. Of course someone will immediately think of a fair in [name]May[/name], but that brings me a good image of spring time and I love spring time. It reminds me of my love of the name Loveday. Different names, but they give me the same feeling.

When I hear Mayfair, I think of the area of [name]London[/name] and the park in Seattle.

I do think that Mayfair is beautiful and I love the nickname [name]May[/name]! I’m not sure if it’s usable as a first name. But I think it could work in theory because of the familiarity of [name]May[/name]. At first it does sound made up, because I’m not used to seeing fair at the end of names, but you did say that it is a legitimate surname so I like it. And if anything, a lot of people are adding ley to names, so if ley can work, why not fair? (Although of course Mayfair is a real name.)

Mayfair is super sweet!

All I think of is Monopoly!

Or the ship the,mayfair

Honestly, I don’t care for it. I just don’t think that Mayfair has a very pretty sound to it and I can’t picture it on an actual person. If it was a family name (mother’s maiden name, for example) I could see it in the middle but I would just find it very odd up front. To answer your question, if I ran into a little girl named Mayfair, my first thought would probably be, “Why didn’t they just name her [name]May[/name]? It’s so much nicer.”

Honestly not a fan of Mayfair. To me it’s just not feminine. I much prefer plane o’l [name]May[/name].

Mayfair is sweet. I like it.

I would love Mayfair as a middle name - such elegant whimsy! - but not as a first.

Mayfair is a little clunky, but i like it! [name]Don[/name]'t know why, but for me it immediately conjures up imagery of a farris wheel at dusk.

I would be delighted to see this on a child.

I think of a village fete with children dancing around the maypole, and the posh area of [name]London[/name]. It’s whimsical and fun, but I worry it could go the way of other ‘aspirational’ names like [name]Chanel[/name] or [name]Lexus[/name], rather than [name]Chelsea[/name] or [name]Sloane[/name].

I think it work as a mn, not so sure about it as a fn.

I’m swooning! It feels so whimsical and feminine to me. I think it would be totally wearable.

I thought immediately “Mayfair Witches,” but I didn’t know why. I googled it and remembered it is from a series by [name]Anne[/name] [name]Rice[/name].

If I didn’t have that link, I would think it’s a very sweet name. But it took me a a few minutes to warm up to it (not that a few minutes is a long time!)

Mayfair are a European brand of cigarette. I’d avoid, for this reason.

I can totally see it on a storybook character, just not a real little girl. Maybe in twenty or so years, it could be an unusual but cool choice. Right now though, I think it seems rather made-up.

I really like it! I’m on the fence regarding how wearable I actually think it is, but I want it to be wearable, if that makes sense. I think that the the familiarity of [name]May[/name] should make it workable. It’s a quirky choice, but definitely in a good way from my perspective.
