Wdyt of Isidore?

I love [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] ! I have no negative associations and pronounce it like Is-uh-door
Nicknames could be
[name_u]Issy[/name_u]- [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]
[name_u]Sid[/name_u]

I like [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] a bit more than [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], but I think it’s such a sweet and underrated name!

[name_u]Idris[/name_u] is another love of mine — I think I like them pretty much the same amount! You can’t go wrong with either.

(and I have no associations whatsoever with [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], and only [name_u]Idris[/name_u] [name_f]Elba[/name_f] with Idris)

for nicknames i love isi, izzy and the suggestion of sid! (or even syd) lovely nicknames
in spanish, apart from Isidro you also got Isidoro!

[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is a very recent love of mine. It was never very high on my radar until my partner (who is a software engineer) mentioned that [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is the patron saint of electricity and the internet on the same day that someone suggested the name on one of my aesthetic boards. Somehow the combination of those two events made me see the name in an entirely new light!

[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] and [name_u]Idris[/name_u] both give me icy, wintry vibes. [name_u]Idris[/name_u] feels more like silver and stone, while [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] feels more like snow-capped mountains and wide-open tundra. I’m partial to [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], because [name_u]Idris[/name_u] is strongly associated both with the Shadowhunters series and with the actor [name_u]Idris[/name_u] [name_f]Elba[/name_f] for me.

I quite like it. I especially love the nickname [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] on a boy! [name_f]My[/name_f] first association is [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], as I’m a big fan of Series of Unfortunate Events, but I can’t think of any negative associations. I’ve heard people pronounce [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] two different ways:

Iz-uh-door
Iz-ih-door

but I don’t think it’s too big of a difference that it would become a big issue, as they sound kinda the same.

I definitely prefer it to [name_u]Idris[/name_u], though I do like [name_u]Idris[/name_u]!

I love it! I kind of wish we’d used it for my son’s middle (we went with Theodore.)

I think [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], Izzo, and [name_u]Sid[/name_u] make for cute nicknames.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread!

@rubylark It’s definitely a cute and cozy name :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
And dory isn’t too bad! Might be a tad feminine but not much more than the adored rory, it’ll go on the list as an option for sure :blush:

@katinka I love them both as well, they definitely have different vibes but in terms of usability i’d only be able to use one of them since they share too many letters. [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] + [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is such an adorable combo :heart_eyes: and i agree a nice change from [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]!

I’m sure it is pronounced id-riss, which i love but eye-driss got stuck in my head after a met a little [name_u]Idris[/name_u] who went by eye-driss. tbh the idris elba association isn’t what bothers me the most, i honestly never hear of this celebrity, and he’s not popular or has ever been mentioned in my circle :woman_shrugging:t3:

I would only use [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] as a first! And thanks for [name_m]Iggy[/name_m] and [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] suggestions, i really like ziggy and i don’t think it’s too much of a stretch!

@MaisieDee I have the same problem as you, i’m a huge nameberry names and therefore my taste in names is a bit much to outsiders lol

I’m very sorry for your friend! Nobody should be judged for their tastes in names or at all.
I don’t think any of these issues are too extreme to stop me from using them, or that some of them are even true. do you know why they were saying it needs an italian connection?
there are so many gorgeous but complicated names out there that people can pronounce and accept and this one will be not be any different
don’t let haters question who you are and what you love

@lavenderwitch I’m glad [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is a recent love for you, it’s one i heard of not too long ago too! I especially love your icy imagery of [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], it’s a new way of seeing the name for me, could [name_f]Icy[/name_f] even work as a nickname??
And thanks for letting me know about shadowhunters :blush:

@joevermore I’m happy to hear you like to nickname izzy on a boy! I like it but had to warm up to it, and am wondering what others will think of it.
I loved series of unfortunate events :heart_eyes:
I pronounce it Iz-ih-door, although like you said they sound so similar and i wouldn’t mind if other people said it both ways!

@brittanyanitarose Izzo is cute thanks!

I love Isidore; it’s one of those old Jewish immigrant names like [name_m]Abe[/name_m] and [name_u]Max[/name_u]. [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] is the perfect nn; I’ve known a number of Izzy’s, including two rabbis.

[name_u]Idris[/name_u] is also a name I like but it has a completely different vibe. It’s Welsh/Celtic, so there’s a [name_u]French[/name_u] version, but it doesn’t come with a nn and there’s one mega-actor; kind of like naming your kid [name_m]Viggo[/name_m] if you’re not Scandinavian.

[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is Greek but it has a number of different western language versions, including Italian.

Yes [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is definitely the best pick for me, going to start studying greek and my mother’s side of the family is italian :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: I’m just having trouble saying it in french for the majority of our family, it still works i’ve just never heard of it in french unlike [name_u]Idris[/name_u]

It’s Isidre in [name_u]French[/name_u]. I’ve never heard it in [name_f]France[/name_f], but I have heard it in Montreal.

You’re totally right, you’ve got to go with what you love and not care what people think, I would hate to feel really underwhelmed by a name I chose purely to please other people.

The Italian comments really confused me as well to be honest, is it even an Italian name? I’m not actually sure. I think people get a bit weird about name origin sometimes, it was like it didn’t sound British enough… Which I found pretty shocking. They were saying that if you’re not Italian you shouldn’t give your child an Italian name… But this makes zero sense because there’s so many popular names used in the UK that are of European origin!

Ohh thank you should’ve thought of that!
I’ve been questioning if it was still just [name_m]Isidor[/name_m] or what

I come from Montreal so that’s interesting, thanks!

@MaisieDee

For sure! Honestly I stopped trying to please everyone a long time ago, and i learnt to take most (random) people’s opinions with a grain of salt
I value my own opinion when it comes to making choices that don’t affect anyone else (or the baby ill be creating, growing inside me, birthing and feeding for the rest of its life)

From what i understand it’s a name that originates from Greece! IsĆdōr or IsĆdōros, and means ā€œgift of isisā€ according to google lol
I think it’s been used among the greek, egyptian, catholic(spain), jewish, and christian but no mention of [name_f]Italy[/name_f] whatsoever, so these people were probably just saying nonsense to make her look bad :cry:

And you’re right it doesn’t, most names we use everyday don’t originate from us, but so many other origins and cultures!
