WDYT of Mattie?

I really love this name. I feel like it’s vintage, not overused, a little sassy, and somewhat tomboyish vibe - plus we have some family ties to it.

[name_f]My[/name_f] concern is would a girl spend her whole life correcting people from the over popular [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]?

[name_u]Or[/name_u] is [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] a usable option with [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] somewhat running its course?

Thoughts from the berries?

I love [name_u]Mattie[/name_u]! I think your description is perfect – sweet and vintage with a cute boyish edge. I do think people might mishear it as [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] sometimes, but it’s an easy correction! I don’t think it would be a constant issue, either.

i say mattie and maddie quite differently but i can imagine in some accents they might sound almost identical so i guess it depends on your accent and that of those around you.

i think mattie is cool. perhaps use matilda as a full name and mattie as a nickname to avoid people mishearing it as maddie?

I agree with everything said here! Mattie is cute but I think it works better as a nickname.

I do say [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] and [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] exactly the same. I think it’s cute but she will definitely have to correct people if she lives in the US at least! Would you like [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]?

I actually know two (one who is just [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] and one whose full name is Mattison) and while both have somewhat dealt with some confusion when verbally introducing themselves, after seeing it written down or being corrected it isn’t really an issue. And people learn others name spellings and pronunciations all the time, it’s not too much of a leap from [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] to [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] with a gentle, one-time correction. Both that I know do also say it with the soft and distinct t sound so it also sounds slightly different from [name_f]Maddie[/name_f].

I think [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is a very cute, vintage-y choice, and with all the Maddie’s and Addie’s running around its still familiar and stylish but also stands apart.

I knew a [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] and it wasn’t confused with [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]

I think I would like [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] but have a bad association with this name from another [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]!

I like the idea of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], but unfortunately I don’t think I could ever use it. I think of the movie… I watched it a ton when I was a kid and quite separate the name from that :confounded:

I do like it more than [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], but I think they would blend together at times

I completely agree with this.

I know a girl named Matison, nicknamed [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], and she never seemed to have issues, but I will say that where I live [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] have very little difference. If I’m really enunciating then I know they should be pronounced differently, but in typical every day life I think I say them pretty similarly, and so did she, which may be why she never corrected anyone.

I think it’s lovely! Unfortunately I do pronounce it exactly the same way as [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], so it kind of ruins it for me! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if I tried to pronounce the t I would sound like I was doing a British accent lol! However if there is a distinction between the pronunciation where you are then definitely use it!

[name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is one of my daughter’s middle name, after my husband [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]. I really love it. I also see it just as you described it. I thought I might regret the spelling but I have loved it all the more as it feels vintage and sweeter.

Thanks for the positive feedback! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] it has worked so well for your daughter!

I would pronounce [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] exactly the same as [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] itself is unusual, practically it will function as an unusual spelling of an extremely common name. I don’t think necessarily a bad thing, just something to think about. I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is lovely.

I love [name_u]Mattie[/name_u]! Very cute.
