DH has pretty much nixed [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], one of my favorite boy names. Right now we’re both loving [name_u]Rigel[/name_u] (and [name_u]Sander[/name_u]). WDYT? I know it’s rare, but it doesn’t strike me as that out since people will most likely know how to pronounce it given its similarity to [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] and that most have heard of the star. It means “foot,” but I don’t care about that. The first association for me is of its being one of the brightest stars in the sky. We didn’t choose it for its astronomical associations specifically, but it is a bonus for me. Apparently there’s also an annoying character in a tv show I’ve never watched named [name_u]Rigel[/name_u], but I don’t think most people will know that.
Also, what would you choose for a middle name? Last name is Irish, 3-syllables, and starts with an “M.”
I’m familiar with it because of the star but never considered it as a name.
I am really digging it! If you and your husband like it, I say go for it! It has a lot going for it, unique but not unfamiliar, easy to pronounce, the star association… Yeah, [name_u]Rigel[/name_u] rocks!
A friend of mine has a black lab named [name_u]Rigel[/name_u], and I always thought it was a great name for a boy. Although it does sound like a name he’d have to grown into, I have trouble picturing a baby [name_u]Rigel[/name_u], but not a young or adult one.
Immediately thought of it as the star in [name_u]Orion[/name_u] constellation. [name_u]Rigel[/name_u] is far more wearable than [name_u]Orion[/name_u]. I say go for it!
I really like it! [name_u]Rigel[/name_u] was at the top of my list if our baby had been a boy. I really like that it’s a star, and it reminds me a bit of the familiar [name_m]Roger[/name_m] without being so fusty and middle-aged.
The first thing I thought of was the annoying character on the TV show you’ve never watch (I’m assuming Farscape - in this case spelled Rygel). The show has enough of an avid (and loud) fanbase that you may want to google the character before you go with the name [name_u]Rigel[/name_u]. There are rumours of a movie/ tv series reboot in the works, and if it does become a hit among kids there might be a potential for teasing. It’s a great name otherwise, so go with your instincts.
i think if you like it then go for it. But if your looking for outsiders honest opinions I find it a bit made up sounding. At first glance I thought it must have been from a foreign language. Personally it doesn’t appeal to me. Although it is easy to say and spell so I would soon get used to it I think. With [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] or [name_u]Jude[/name_u] as a middle name it has a quirky cowboy kind of feel which I quite like
I wasn’t online for most of the weekend, so I missed these responses. Thanks, everyone. Sounds like generally favorable responses to it, which is great!
I prefer [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] (and [name_u]Sander[/name_u]), but it sounds like you both love it, and that’s what matters! I would focus on the star association and forget about ‘foot’ - not a big deal imo. [name_u]Rigel[/name_u] is interesting - I think it could grow on me.
