For a long time [name_f]Terra[/name_f] along with [name_u]Wren[/name_u] has been a favourite nature name for a girl, [name_f]Terra[/name_f]'s roots are Latin meaning earth. Though I’ve always wondered if [name_m]Terre[/name_m] could be a usable name for girl since its a name that would be traditionally given to a boy. Part of the reason why I like it over [name_f]Terra[/name_f] is its less confusable with the name [name_f]Tara[/name_f] in my opinion.
[name_m]Terre[/name_m] is the french word for [name_f]Earth[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Terra[/name_f] for a girl. [name_m]Terre[/name_m] feels incomplete to me.
[name_m]Terre[/name_m] and [name_f]Terra[/name_f] both have equal associations with the word “earth” (terra cotta?), but I don’t think [name_m]Terre[/name_m] works nearly as well in English. It sounds like “tear” (as in, to rip or shread), and I wouldn’t want that association. When I’m thinking in [name_m]French[/name_m], sometimes something sounds really cool and intriguing to me, too, but I have to remind myself how it would actually sound in English. [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] in [name_m]French[/name_m] and English sound quite different to me, too, when I think about it! If you have to use it, I would use it as a second middle (I think even something like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_m]Terre[/name_m] is pretty odd, although something like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_m]Terre[/name_m] I could deal with).
I’ll be honest, I don’t think of ‘earth’ when I hear [name_m]Terre[/name_m], I think of ‘pomme de terre’ which is a potato (direct translation: apple of earth). Not really a connection I’d like. As it is, I dislike [name_f]Terra[/name_f]/[name_f]Tara[/name_f], because of personal connections, but taking the word [name_m]Terre[/name_m] and using as a name on either gender doesn’t sound as nice. [name_m]French[/name_m] words CAN make beautiful names, but as ashthedreamer said, they don’t always sound that great when translated to English. Not to mention, I’m sure you’d get odd looks from some [name_m]French[/name_m] speakers for using a word connected to potatoes and dirt as a name
I love the name terra / although I like it for a boy thanks to KH I like on a girl to though thanks to teen titans or else KH would be my only association anyways I won’t be able to use it bad associations with a [name_f]Tara[/name_f]
[name_m]Terre[/name_m] I don’t really like this sounds incomplete
[name_m]Terre[/name_m] sort of sounds to me like terror said fast. Or like another person said “tear” to rip. Also the spelling reminds me of [name_u]Terry[/name_u]. I don’t speak [name_m]French[/name_m] so mine is strictly an English speakers perspective.
my name is [name_f]Tara[/name_f] though I pronounce it Tar-ruh. I think [name_f]Terra[/name_f] is a lovely name, this spelling makes more sense to me that [name_f]Tara[/name_f]- pronounce Ter-ra, [name_m]Terre[/name_m] sounds like tear to me, as in to tear a piece of paper. But I think it would work well as a nickname for [name_f]Terra[/name_f]
