WDYT of the name Berit?

I’d love to hear your honest thoughts on the name [name]Berit[/name].

I found it in our family tree and am not sure how I feel about it. I like strong but feminine girls names, so I like that aspect. But is [name]Berit[/name] too close to the popular boys names [name]Bennett[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Beckett[/name], [name]Garrett[/name], etc? What comes to mind when you hear the name…what would you picture a [name]Berit[/name] to look/be like? Is it too harsh sounding?

Thanks for your thoughts! We aren’t running names by friends/family this time, so I value your honest feedback.

I knew a female [name]Berit[/name] and know a male [name]Barrett[/name]. I like Merit for a girl a little better.

prefer [name]Barrett[/name]

[name]Berit[/name] is rather harsh sounding, but that’s why I like it. [name]Even[/name] though it seems masculine, I don’t make an immediate connection to [name]Bennett[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], or [name]Beckett[/name]. I honestly picture an absolutely stunning girl who embraces her individuality and doesn’t take herself too seriously. It’s exotic and androgynous and exciting. I really hope you consider it!

[name]Bedelia[/name] and [name]Birgitta[/name] are pretty cute related names if you just can’t imagine bringing home [name]Baby[/name] Girl [name]Berit[/name].

My first thought was that it reminded me of [name]Beryl[/name]. Not one of my favorite names, but it could be a cool middle

In my opinion, it is too harsh sounding. I have a friend who named her daughter [name]Marit[/name], and I thought the same thing about that name. I picture a woman with a name like [name]Berit[/name] to be a very cold person - and I’d picture her to look that way too, like some sort of dictator or something. It is not a friendly sounding name at all. Maybe it’s because it is just not my style, but that’s what I think of when I hear it.

I actually did name my youngest daughter [name_f]Berit[/name_f] -23yrs ago! I heard it from a Swedish friend of my sister’s in [name_m]Jr[/name_m].high MANY long years ago:D. [name_f]My[/name_f] mother-in-law thought we’d made it up, till she talked to some of her Swedish friends - lol.
Bottom line is, we love it! It’s easy to pronounce (tho gotta give some people credit for trying to screw it up!), unusual without being weird & we’ve never met another one! It’s one of those names that doesn’t need a last name. Mention “[name_f]Berit[/name_f]” & everybody knows who you’re talking about. It fits whether she’s tiny or 90 & we’ve had many compliments on it. At home she gets called “Ber” (bear), The [name_m]Bear[/name_m], Biwi, & of course her oldest sister had to call her “Bare Butt” when she went streaking on the beach as a baby :D. ([name_m]Said[/name_m] big sis just turned 30 & has shortened it to “Butt”)
BTW, her middle name is [name_f]Ellin[/name_f]; nobody told me it should have only one “l”.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

I’ve never heard of [name_f]Berit[/name_f] before, but I automatically thought it was a male name, my mistake. It’s not my style; seems to be a cross between [name_f]Beryl[/name_f] and Merit, both are not favourites of mine.

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother’s name is [name_f]Berit[/name_f] so I can only picture it on an old woman. No one names their child [name_f]Berit[/name_f] in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u] at the moment and personally I don’t really like that name.
