NB: I’m not currently pregnant, but had my baby boy over a year ago and am starting to think about having another in a few years.
I never struggled with girl names. I used to have lists and lists of girl names and only one or two boy names I actually liked. Then, oddly, after having a baby boy in early 2022, it’s like I cannot think of a single girl name that I like enough. I’m trying not to worry too much about it being a perfect “sibset”, which I think is where my hesitation now stems from.
For context, my 1-year old son is called Christopher “Kit” Rowan. We call him Kit all the time and it’s really only Christopher for official purposes and in case he prefers is when he’s older. I wasn’t brave enough for Kit as a standalone name. We love it and adore it even more, now that he’s growing older and responding to the name.
When it comes to names for girls, we keep coming up short. I liked the name Kiara a lot but upon discovering that a lot of other UK people seem to pronounce it as Kee-ra (likely due to the Irish name Ciara), I’m a bit more reluctant.
My husband is British, I am German and we live in the UK. As such, as need the name to be international and easy to pronounce in both languages. We also seem to prefer shorter, two-syllable names for girls, which works well with the name “Kit” but not so much with the longer “Christopher”.
Before finding out the sex of our baby, my husband and I really loved the name Luna for a daughter, but I’ve now gone off it. It might be the popularity of the name that is bothering me now.
We have a list, though we’re both not really all that happy with it:
- Kira
- Linnea
- Sienna
- Maya
- Lyra
- Ariana
- Romy
- Elowen
For reference, the boy names we are fond of (if we had another boy) are Theodore nn Theo or Teddy and Arlo.
Could I have thoughts on our list so far and perhaps some suggestions? Especially if you can think of a girl name that “matches” with Kit or Christopher.
