First, BIG thank you to all the nameberry users who gave advice about our second daughter’s name … it was really helpful and much appreciated.
I think we’ve settled on [name]Tess[/name] and we wanted to go with [name]Mairi[/name] for a second name. [name]Mairi[/name]'s the Scottish version of [name]Mary[/name] (I’m Scottish so wanted to have that flavour in the name) – to honor a good friend of ours, [name]Mary[/name], who passed away recently.
We think, though, that [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name] is rather short and clipped (two short names back to back).
What do nameberries think about
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Mariela[/name] (Spanish diminuntive form of [name]Mary[/name] – and our friend worked in South [name]America[/name] so this is fitting – though I say goodbye to my Scottish [name]Mairi[/name]!) or
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] (which I prefer to [name]Mariela[/name] but [name]Amelia[/name] doesn’t have the same “[name]Mary[/name]” connection as [name]Mariela[/name])
What do you think of these names overall and which option should we go for? Or do you think [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name] is fine?
Again, thanks for the help. I was going a little crazy thinking about names and feedback here has helped me clarify some ideas.
I think [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mariela[/name] has a better sound, although I would like [name]Tess[/name] [name]Marietta[/name] (or [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mariette[/name]) even more. Ultimately, go with what you love.
I love [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mariela[/name]! I think [name]Tess[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] sounds like [name]Tessa[/name] [name]Melia[/name]. It’s nice to be able to honor your friend.
I think you should just go with [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name].
Here are my reasons why. I think when possible people should just “go for it” on middle names and give a middle name that has meaning or a story behind it not just one that sounds pretty. I think this just because the truth is the child’s entire name is said often the first few days of life then it is all but forgotten most of the time. In the US many women are giving up their middle names once they get married in order to keep their maiden name as a middle name.
I think having the story and the meaning of the middle name is more important than “flow”. But that is just my opinion. So if flow and sound is really important to you, then open your options to something that will honor your friend and give a flowing sound you also like.
Before you decide, be sure to check out these two lists: [name]Mary[/name]'s International Variations and [name]Mary[/name]'s Stylish Variations.
Have you considered [name]Tess[/name] [name]Maisie[/name] or [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Tess[/name]? Scottish – and in honor of your friend. And I like it even better than [name]Amelia[/name]!
I think you should go with [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name]! I think it sounds lovely and it best fulfills your desires to honor your friend [name]Mary[/name] and also use a Scottish name. [name]Even[/name] if [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mariela[/name] has a somewhat “better” flow, remember that the times people will say your child’s full name will actually be fairly rare. It’s a good thing to keep in mind when naming, sure, but in real life, it doesn’t come up all that often.
Meanwhile, [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name] will have a beautiful, special middle name that meant a lot to her parents. [name]Don[/name]'t feel like you have to “compromise” for the sake of flow. (And [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name] flows just fine anyway!)
Definitely [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name] - I think short names have spunk and class and the [name]Mary[/name] connection was what was so important to you.
Or you could use [name]Tessa[/name] [name]Mairi[/name] - that flows really well (and just call her [name]Tess[/name]). I would most likely do that
I really like [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mairi[/name], but maybe like you said a longer middle name would be better. I think that [name]Tess[/name] [name]Mariella[/name] sounds pretty cool, and you can honor your friend with that.
[name]Mary[/name] is one of the most classic names on earth, with millions of variations. So, I’m sure that there’s must be one you like.
