We need help narrowing down our options!

Good morning everyone! I posted here a few weeks ago almost completely lost as to where to start with naming our first, due in Feb. You all had wonderful suggestions, and have really helped my husband and me start making a list of potentials.

[name]Hope[/name] I helped some!

Girls:
[name]Agnes[/name] - I have never really liked this name. But I have looked up [name]Agnes[/name] on “check out a name”. There are some International forms of [name]Agnes[/name] that are lovely.
[name]Bianca[/name] - Yes, I love [name]Bianca[/name].
[name]Camilla[/name] - I like [name]Camilla[/name], but I’m in love with [name]Camille[/name].
[name]Cecily[/name] (or [name]Celia[/name], or [name]Cecilia[/name]) - absolutely love, but I don’t love what it means.
[name]Eleanor[/name] - adore, I feel warm and protected when I hear [name]Eleanor[/name], like I have a little prim house all around me.
[name]Eloise[/name] - love
[name]Ellison[/name] - not my style
[name]Emerson[/name] - ditto
[name]Eveline[/name] - I would spell this [name]Evelyn[/name]. Another name that makes me feel warm. I think of an old, slightly overgrown garden with wrought iron furniture on a used brick patio.
[name]Ivy[/name] - love it, it is very lively.
[name]Janine[/name] (family name) - not my style. I do enjoy [name]Jeannette[/name] lately.
[name]Josephine[/name] (nn [name]Posey[/name]) *my fav right now
[name]Louisa[/name] - love
[name]Lydia[/name] - admire
[name]Magdalen/name (family name) - love it! nn [name]Lena[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] - love, another warm name.

[name]Archer[/name] - love
Broden *husband’s fav (but really not my style) - I don’t like it. Sounds like the [name]Braden[/name]/[name]Aiden[/name]/[name]Jaden[/name] crew. Also sounds kind of like brood.
[name]Charles[/name] - love, love [name]Charlie[/name]
[name]Falkner[/name] - not me
[name]Fallon[/name] - ditto
[name]Fox[/name] - ditto, but I love [name]Russell[/name] which means “fox”.
[name]Gerrit[/name] (family name)
[name]Gideon[/name] *this is my fav right now
[name]Graham[/name] - like pretty well.
[name]Harrison[/name] - like, it is a great name, but I know someone named [name]Harrison[/name] that I don’t like that much. So I am biased.

[name]Raymond[/name] (family name) - love
[name]Wilder[/name] - would love it in the middle.

[name]Agnes[/name] - A lot of people like this name, but any girls name starting in “ag” makes it sound non-feminine to me.
[name]Bianca[/name] - Sounds very snobbish to me.
[name]Camilla[/name] - This name is pretty and I love the nn’s, but it reminds me of [name]Camilla[/name] [name]Parker[/name] Bowles.
[name]Cecily[/name] (or [name]Celia[/name], or [name]Cecilia[/name]) - Such a beautiful name! I love [name]Celia[/name] most with the nn CiCi.
[name]Eleanor[/name] - I want to like this name, because I think [name]Nora[/name] is a cute nn, but I don’t.
[name]Eloise[/name] - GORGEOUS!
[name]Ellison[/name] - Seems like it’s a mispelled for [name]Allison[/name].
[name]Emerson[/name] - I don’t typically like unisex names, but all the E names are so lovely. [name]Love[/name] all the nn’s too.
[name]Eveline[/name] - [name]Do[/name] you not like [name]Evelyn[/name]?
[name]Ivy[/name] - Beautiful!

[name]Maria[/name] (family name) - I know soooo many [name]Maria[/name]'s and those with the mn [name]Maria[/name].
[name]Marina[/name]*husband’s fav - It’s pretty, but I really think of a [name]Marina[/name].
[name]Matilda[/name] - Not my favourite.
[name]Paloma[/name] - SUCH a beautiful name.
[name]Ramona[/name] (family name) - Very much dislike.

Boys:
[name]Archer[/name] - Very cute. Like nn [name]Archie[/name]
Broden *husband’s fav (but really not my style) - Goes in the Adien crowd, in my book.
[name]Charles[/name] - One of my all time favourites!
[name]Falkner[/name] - Excuse me?
[name]Fallon[/name] - Makes me think Flacid. Yikes.
[name]Fox[/name] - Cute for a dog.
[name]Gerrit[/name] (family name) - [name]How[/name] is this prn?
[name]Gideon[/name] *this is my fav right now - GREAT name!
[name]Graham[/name] - I really like this name as well.
[name]Harrison[/name] - Cute, but I don’t like [name]Harry[/name].
[name]Henry[/name] - Like [name]Charles[/name], one of my all time favourites. Really popular right now, though.
[name]Lennox[/name] - Handsome.

[name]Osiris[/name] - Eh.
Pelletier (family name) - I actually like this.
[name]Raymond[/name] (family name) - Everybody loves [name]Raymond[/name] = whiney voice, in my opinion.
[name]Wilder[/name] - Cute… careful what you wish for.
[name]William[/name] (family name) - I like [name]William[/name], but I think of [name]Liam[/name] as a nn for [name]William[/name].

Best of luck to you!!

[name]Marina[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] [name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Eve[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Ramona[/name] [name]Kate[/name]

These are my favorites from your girl names. They were hard to combine because a lot of end in the letter “A” so I picked some middle names for them not on your list.

[name]Henry[/name] [name]Wilder[/name] or [name]Wilder[/name] [name]Henry[/name]
[name]Liam[/name] [name]Archer[/name]
[name]Harrison[/name] [name]Fox[/name]
[name]Gideon[/name] [name]Graham[/name]
[name]Charles[/name] [name]Fallon[/name]

Good luck!

Girls:
[name]Agnes[/name] - This is not my style. It feels dated to me.
[name]Bianca[/name] - I want to like this name but it sounds stuck up.
[name]Camilla[/name] - Soft and pretty.
[name]Cecily[/name] (or [name]Celia[/name], or [name]Cecilia[/name]) - Another one I can’t seem to love.
[name]Eleanor[/name] - I like this more than I thought I would. nn [name]Elle[/name] would be cute.
[name]Eloise[/name] - Maybe for a mn
[name]Ellison[/name] - I actually love this one. I like unisex names and this one I think is an alternative to [name]Allison[/name].
[name]Emerson[/name] - I like this one but more for a mn.
[name]Eveline[/name] - I have to agree that I like [name]Evelyn[/name] better. [name]Evelyn[/name] is a favorite of mine.
[name]Ivy[/name] - Very pretty, I love it.
[name]Janine[/name] (family name) - Not so much for me.
[name]Josephine[/name] (nn [name]Posey[/name]) *my fav right now - I love [name]Josephine[/name]!
[name]Louisa[/name] - It reminds me of [name]Eloise[/name] and I’d also keep in the middle.
[name]Lydia[/name] - My ultimate favorite that my husband hates. [name]LOVE[/name] IT!
[name]Magdalen/name (family name) - Kind of a mouthful.
[name]Margaret[/name] - It’s classic but not a favorite.
[name]Maria[/name] (family name) - Actually is growing on me.
[name]Marina[/name]*husband’s fav - I too like this name a lot but can’t fit it in with my names.
[name]Matilda[/name] - I like this one a lot.
[name]Paloma[/name] - I haven’t heard it enough to form an honest opinion. What could the nn be?
[name]Ramona[/name] (family name) - I actually do like this one. Reminds of the childrens book series.

Boys:
[name]Archer[/name] - Not my style. Maybe as a md.
Broden *husband’s fav (but really not my style) - All I hear is Bro and in my mind is like saying dude.
[name]Charles[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it.
[name]Falkner[/name] - Not my style.
[name]Fallon[/name] - I like this one but prefer it in the middle.
[name]Fox[/name] - Maybe more for a middle. But it does have appeal as a first.

[name]Gideon[/name] *this is my fav right now - [name]Love[/name] this one.
[name]Graham[/name] - Very nice.
[name]Harrison[/name] - Also very nice.
[name]Henry[/name] - It’s okay.
[name]Lennox[/name] - Very nice for a mn or a first.
[name]Liam[/name] (family name) - Handsome.
[name]Nicolai[/name] - [name]Susan[/name] suggested [name]Nico[/name] and I love it!
[name]Osiris[/name] - I actually have this as an option for a mn.
Pelletier (family name) - I only see a last name.
[name]Raymond[/name] (family name) - Another strong name.
[name]Wilder[/name] - I’d keep it in the middle.
[name]William[/name] (family name) - Always a good choice.

My favorites for your girls

[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name]

Boys favorites-
[name]Gideon[/name]
[name]Charles[/name]
[name]William[/name]

Girls:
[name]Agnes[/name]-- was my grandmother’s mn. Beautiful in its own right, but not my fave
[name]Bianca[/name]-- pretty, uncommon, I’ve only met one in my life. I think it’s pretty
[name]Camilla[/name]-- prefer [name]Camille[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name] (or [name]Celia[/name], or [name]Cecilia[/name])-- [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Celia[/name], like the other two
[name]Eleanor[/name]-- not my taste
[name]Eloise[/name]-- same as [name]Eleanor[/name], and it reminds me of the books with the little girl [name]Eloise[/name].
[name]Ellison[/name]-- never heard it, but very beautiful!!
[name]Emerson[/name]-- so depressed this has become a girls name, as I love it for boys
[name]Eveline[/name]-- L.O.V.E. although, is it eh-vuh-leen, ee-vuh-line, eh-vuh-line?
[name]Ivy[/name]-- seems to be popular on this site, and I’ve heard of quite of few little ones with it
[name]Janine[/name] (family name)-- very pretty, classy
[name]Josephine[/name] (nn [name]Posey[/name]) *my fav right now— love it! Also like the nickname [name]Joey[/name] or [name]Jojo[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]-not a fan
[name]Lydia[/name]-- well it reminds me of a girl in hs who was called lydia chlamydia
[name]Magdalen/name (family name)-- [name]Magdalena[/name] is GORGEOUS
[name]Margaret[/name]-- my great aunt’s name, I quite like [name]Maggie[/name] as a nn
[name]Maria[/name] (family name)-- too common
[name]Marina[/name]*husband’s fav-- BEAUTIFUL
[name]Matilda[/name]-- too common
[name]Paloma[/name]-- very pretty, sounds exotic
[name]Ramona[/name] (family name)-- reminds me of the [name]Beverly[/name] [name]Cleary[/name] books I read as a child, but a nice name

Boys:
[name]Archer[/name]-- really like it
Broden *husband’s fav (but really not my style)-- love it!!!
[name]Charles[/name]-- my grandpa’s middle name that I have always liked, it’s very classic
[name]Falkner[/name]-- haha sheesh, yet another one of my families names, but it’s their surname, and I prefer it that way
[name]Fallon[/name]-- personally not a fan of animal related names
[name]Fox[/name]-- same as above

[name]Gideon[/name] *this is my fav right now-- think of a weird host on MTV
[name]Graham[/name]-- lovely name
[name]Harrison[/name]-- [name]LOVE[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]-- [name]Love[/name], but becoming really popular
[name]Lennox[/name]-- I like it, but I think I prefer [name]Lennon[/name], although then you get the [name]John[/name] [name]Lennon[/name] link
[name]Liam[/name] (family name)-- too popular, but I still love the name
[name]Nicolai[/name]-- I like this alternative to nicholas!
[name]Osiris[/name]–not a fan
Pelletier (family name)-- very unique, I think I like it!
[name]Raymond[/name] (family name)-- not a fan
[name]Wilder[/name]-- awesome name!
[name]William[/name] (family name)-- a classic choice, and of course you could always nn him [name]Liam[/name], since that’s where the name is derived from!

You have quite the list, best wishes narrowing it down!!! Based on your choices, I’m pretty sure your child will have a great name one way or the other!!!

I got home and my husband said: “Check the post! Check the post!” :o)

I love hearing everyone’s associations and opinions on names. Sometimes it either makes me realize why my husband likes a name so much or cement in my mind why I wasn’t sold on some of his suggestions.

I’m not opposed to [name]Evelyn[/name], but when I see this, I always pronounce it eh-VUH-lyn. But when I see [name]Eveline[/name], I say EE-vuh-lyn. And that second pronunciation is the one I like better. Is that crazy? Am I just inviting pronunciation problems? And [name]Susan[/name]-- I love the description of how this name makes you feel! That’s exactly what I think too!

I am thrilled with the enthusiasm for [name]Magdalen/name. [name]Magdalen[/name] was my grandmother’s name, and I like the [name]Magdalena[/name] version (I guess I like names that end in a a lot, huh?) nameberry says the nn [name]Magda[/name] should be left in the past, but I really like it. Crazy?

I agree that Broden sounds too much like “bro” as in “hey bro.” (my husband is shaking his head). And wouldn’t that be the obvious nn Bro? Not cool.

[name]Gerrit[/name] is a family spelling, actually I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be pronounced like [name]Garret[/name], but it isn’t in our family. [name]Gerrit[/name] is JARE-it vs. [name]Garret[/name] is [name]GARE[/name]-it. My uncle (the namesake) when by [name]Gerry[/name] (like [name]Jerry[/name]).

As for the [name]Ellison[/name]/[name]Emerson[/name] thing. These are major compromise names. I love [name]Ellie[/name] and [name]Emmy[/name] as nn, but don’t like the popularity of many of the full names that get these nicknames. We both love literature, so these are my husband’s nods at [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Waldo[/name] [name]Emerson[/name] and [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Ellison[/name] (Invisible [name]Man[/name]). Haha-- “maybe we should consider [name]Ralph[/name] instead,” he says.

Your comments are so helpful! I really want to get a solid top 5 for each sex to work with by [name]October[/name]. If you thought this list was bad, wait until we get to middle names. We have a list of names to honor a mile long…

Girls:
[name]Agnes[/name]: I’m personally not a fan of the “[name]Ag[/name]” sound at the beginning, although I’m a huge lover of vintage names. When it comes to names that remind me of [name]Agnes[/name] (s on the end), I love [name]Carys[/name], [name]Iris[/name], and [name]Hollis[/name].

[name]Bianca[/name]: I think [name]Bianca[/name] is gorgeous, but I have to admit that when I see it, I think of Binaca breath spray.

[name]Camilla[/name]: If not for the image of [name]Camilla[/name] [name]Parker[/name] Bowles, I’d love this name. I think it’s very pretty, but I guess I’m just more of a [name]Camille[/name] person.

[name]Cecily[/name] (or [name]Celia[/name], or [name]Cecilia[/name]): I love all three names! [name]Celia[/name] is one of my all-time favorites.

[name]Eleanor[/name]: [name]Love[/name]…

[name]Eloise[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name]! [name]LOVE[/name]!

[name]Ellison[/name]: To me, the unisex [name]Ellison[/name] and [name]Emerson[/name] feel trendy and don’t fit in with the other names on your list.

[name]Emerson[/name]: See [name]Ellison[/name]…

[name]Eveline[/name]: Very pretty… I saw what you wrote about pronunciation, and I think that you’ll still have issues with the [name]Eveline[/name] spelling. Because of this, I’d personally stick with [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Eve[/name], or [name]Genevieve[/name] (nn [name]Evie[/name]).

[name]Ivy[/name]: I love this name!

[name]Janine[/name] (family name): I’m personally not a fan of [name]Janine[/name], but I love [name]Jane[/name]!

[name]Josephine[/name] (nn [name]Posey[/name]): I think [name]Josephine[/name] is gorgeous…

[name]Louisa[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name]!

[name]Lydia[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name]!

[name]Magdalen/name (family name): Very pretty…

[name]Margaret[/name]: [name]Lovely[/name]…

[name]Maria[/name] (family name): Very pretty…

[name]Marina[/name]: Something about [name]Marina[/name] doesn’t appeal to me, but I’m not sure why. I guess it doesn’t feel as sophisticated as [name]Mariana[/name] to me… Hmm…

[name]Matilda[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name]! (I think that [name]Tilly[/name] is darling as a nickname…)

[name]Paloma[/name]: I think [name]Paloma[/name] is beautiful…

[name]Ramona[/name] (family name): This name’s cool quirkiness has been growing on me. (I just have to block out [name]Ramona[/name] from the Real Housewives of New [name]York[/name].) I loved reading [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Quimby[/name] books when I was little.

Boys:
[name]Archer[/name]: I think this is handsome…

Broden: I personally don’t care for Broden. It reminds me of the trendy [name]Brody[/name] and [name]Brady[/name], and the word “Brooding.”

[name]Charles[/name]: [name]Love[/name]!

[name]Falkner[/name]: I personally don’t care for this name, and think the “[name]Falk[/name]” beginning is pretty close in sound to a certain 4 letter word.

[name]Fallon[/name]: I think of the word “Phallic.” :frowning:

[name]Fox[/name]: I can totally see “f_cks” and “foxy” jokes resulting from this name… I’d personally keep it in the middle…

Have you considered [name]Felix[/name]?

[name]Gerrit[/name] (family name): I love the sound of it, but think spelling issues may arise…

[name]Gideon[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] this name! [name]LOVE[/name] it!

[name]Graham[/name]: I think [name]Graham[/name] is handsome, but I prefer some of the others on your list…

[name]Harrison[/name]: I adore this name…

[name]Henry[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name]!

[name]Lennox[/name]: I think of the china brand, and am reminded of [name]Maddox[/name] [name]Jolie[/name]-[name]Pitt[/name].

[name]Liam[/name] (family name): Nice (but popular…)

[name]Nicolai[/name]: Interesting…

[name]Osiris[/name]: I’m not an [name]Osiris[/name] fan, mostly because it reminds me of “otitis,” which is an inflammation of the ear.

What about [name]Silas[/name] or [name]Cyrus[/name]?

Pelletier (family name): I think this would make a great middle name…

[name]Raymond[/name] (family name): I think it’s great!

[name]Wilder[/name]: I like this name…

[name]William[/name] (family name): I’ve always loved this name…

I love so many of the names you’ve listed!

Good luck!

[name]Evelyn[/name] is lovely, huh?

[name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Magda[/name] for [name]Magdalen[/name] or [name]Magdalena[/name]. Very original! I think it’s edgy cool. She would be the only one in her class. I think I love [name]Magdalena[/name] more than [name]Magdalen[/name].

[name]Evelyn[/name] is lovely but I find [name]Magdalena[/name] a hard sounding name. I would prefer [name]Adeline[/name]/a.

I love your naming style!

Girls:
[name]Agnes[/name] - I adore this, especially with the cute nn [name]Aggie[/name]
[name]Bianca[/name] - beautiful and somewhat underused
[name]Camilla[/name] - not as stunning as some of your other suggestions, in my opinion
[name]Cecily[/name] - a stunning classic
[name]Eleanor[/name] - I love
[name]Eloise[/name] - very nice
[name]Ellison[/name] - I’m not so fond of this one, personally … it reminds me of the [name]Madison[/name]/[name]Addison[/name] trend
[name]Emerson[/name] - as with [name]Ellison[/name]
[name]Eveline[/name] - would you be pronouncing this eh-vel-een or eh-vel-ine? Or like [name]Evelyn[/name]?
[name]Ivy[/name] - I adore
[name]Janine[/name] - to me, this is a little dated, and sounds almost whiney … [name]Jane[/name] is a beautiful, classic alternative
[name]Josephine[/name] (nn [name]Posey[/name]) - I love love [name]LOVE[/name] this one, especially with the nn [name]Posey[/name] (and there are plenty of other nn options, too, should she grow out of it)
[name]Louisa[/name] - a classic
[name]Lydia[/name] - another classic
[name]Magdalen/name - I think [name]Magdalena[/name] is just gorgeous
[name]Margaret[/name] - nice, although not as stunning as some of your other options, in my opinion, and a little harsh-sounding
[name]Maria[/name] - gorgeous
[name]Marina[/name] - pretty, and a good way to annoy [name]Maria[/name], too, if you didn’t want to use [name]Maria[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] - I adore, especially with the nn [name]Tilly[/name]
[name]Paloma[/name] - pretty
[name]Ramona[/name] - I love.

Also, how about [name]Flora[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] or [name]Edith[/name] nn [name]Edie[/name]?

Boys:
[name]Archer[/name] - [name]Archie[/name] is an adorable nn
Broden - I think this may date badly, and be identifiable as an late 00s baby, because of the current -en trend
[name]Charles[/name] - a classic
[name]Falkner[/name] - not my favourite
[name]Fallon[/name] - I don’t think this has the best sound out of your options
[name]Fox[/name] - a little abrupt, in my opinion
[name]Gerrit[/name] - this reminds me of when people say ‘geddit?’ after a joke … I personally wouldn’t use this as a fn
[name]Gideon[/name] - handsome and strong
[name]Graham[/name] - I’ve known there to be pronounciation issues with this one
[name]Harrison[/name] - I like this one
[name]Henry[/name] - a handsome classic
[name]Lennox[/name] - I’m not so fond of this one, and you might have to watch out for a rise in popularity because of [name]Maddox[/name] and [name]Knox[/name] [name]Jolie[/name]-[name]Pitt[/name]
[name]Liam[/name] - nice
[name]Nicolai[/name] - a nice twist on [name]Nicholas[/name], I think this is very handsome
[name]Osiris[/name] -stunning, but could be considered feminine because of [name]Iris[/name]
Pelletier - reminds me of pellets, like the sort used to kill pests …
[name]Raymond[/name] - lovely, but I’m unsure if it’s ready for a revival quite yet
[name]Wilder[/name] - nice, but not my favourite of your options
[name]William[/name] - a classic.

I think you’re right that [name]Eveline[/name] may give you more toruble than it’s worth. I would pronounce that “ev-vuh-line”, still gettting that same “vuh” sound. What do you think of [name]Evelina[/name]? I would say it “ev-el-lee-nuh”. For some reason the extra syllable changes the pronounciation for me.

I really like [name]Magdalena[/name], plus it’s great that it honors your family member. It’s definately a fitting-in standing-out name to me. I hope to see it on your top 5 list!

Gerit is, again, a name that may give you omre trouble than it’s worth.

I actually do like [name]Ellison[/name], but I really like [name]Emerson[/name]. I’m an [name]Allison[/name] so the “son” suffix has never bothered me on a girl.

[name]Eveline[/name] is in all honesty probably off the list. I still really like it (pronounced EE-vuh-lyn), but I never truly loved it the way I do some of the others.

We were discussing [name]Ivy[/name] today because my husband loves how it sounds, but dislikes how short it looks written down for a fn. His mother’s maiden name is Lavigne (the vine)-- would you consider [name]Ivy[/name] a way of honoring the Lavigne side of the family? This might give it the oomph it needs to get on his mn contention list.

I think some of the combos you have suggested with [name]Ivy[/name] in the middle are really lovely.

And looking back over our list, I’m loving fewer and fewer of the boys names (almost all my husband’s suggestions will be off the revised list.) But I’m largely alright with that since [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Harrison[/name] are winning by a mile.

I’m finding it much harder with girls’ names. I love too many.

[name]Ivy[/name] is a brilliant way to honour the Lavigne side of the family, and is just perfect as a mn!

When you make your revised list, just post it up and I’m sure we’d all love to help you out some more
