Our boy name was easy but now we are having a girl and picked the name [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I love it but our last name ends in ley so I thought [name_f]Grace[/name_f] could be part of the first name. Friends like it so why do I keep searching?
I love the name [name_f]Kezia[/name_f] but husband doesn’t, I like [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] too but he doesn’t. His are ultra traditional choices which I really don’t like. We both like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] but it’s too common for my liking.
Any ideas? Is it just pregnancy hormones making me crazy and unable to commit??!!
I guess the thing to ask yourself is–why are you questioning this name? Does it not feel right? Does some little part of you like the name [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] better? Yes, [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is very popular, but so is [name_u]Riley[/name_u] (though [name_u]Riley[/name_u] is slightly less so, ranking at #22 compared to [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]'s #8). Some people (especially on here) may avoid the repeating “-ley” sounds when naming their children, but if that doesn’t bother you, then don’t second-guess yourself on their account.
There’s no harm in casually continuing to look at names, but don’t stress over it. Something made you pick [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] over every other name that you know. What is that thing? Meaning? Sound? Associations? Maybe pinpointing what you love about this name will also help you see what (if anything) you don’t love about this name. Once you know that, it can help narrow the search for another name (if you decide you want a different name). If you can’t think of anything, then you’ll know [name_u]Riley[/name_u] is certainly the one for you!
I’ve questioned the girl’s name much more than the boy’s name both times. [name_m]Even[/name_m] this morning, I had a moment of “maybe we should name her this instead” for the new baby. And I sometimes think “what if we’d named [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] this instead, and then we could name the new baby that or that and it would sound so cute together!”
Maybe for many of us there are more great options for girls and it’s difficult to choose just one? Maybe there feels like more pressure to ‘get it right’ with a girl’s name?
All I can say is, this is normal! The name you choose will be one of the names you love, and you’ll grow to love it more and more because it will now represent the person who is your daughter.
My sister found out pretty early that she was having a boy but he was always going to be [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], meanwhile before she even hit 14 weeks (when she was told she was having a boy) she went from being absolutely sure a little girl would be [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], then [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] and [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]. And she was so sure every time and then decided that it wasn’t ‘the name’.
I don’t think you’re alone but I think @aread has some great suggestions.
For what it’s worth while [name_u]Riley[/name_u] is not my style, I think [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is absolutely beautiful. Spunky [name_u]Riley[/name_u] with soft and feminine [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is pretty amazing
I think that since you really love the name [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], but at the same time you hate that it’s modern, you could just spell it differently. Sure, it will still sound the same, but the way you spell it always matters. Like for instance, [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] is a modern name, and my mom named me [name_f]Sicilia[/name_f]. My name is so rare that it’s not on any of the name websites I know! It’s more of a popular last name rather than a first name. So see it’s modern sounding, but it’s also spelt in a rare form which makes it modern & rare at the same time! [name_m]Just[/name_m] in case if you decide on the name, [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], here are spelling suggestions for if you choose to spell it differently to make it not so modern:

Oh please don’t spell it ‘creatively’ it’s a crime against the English language!
I think it’s only natural to keep questioning your choice, bestowing a name upon a child is so incredibly significant, I think questioning is just the response to the feeling of gravitas that wells up inside all of us when we partake in this beautiful rite of passage.
I’m doing the same thing. We decided on [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] but I’m still looking at sites and books so I’m sure.
I speak from no experience when it comes to naming kids, but I have been a name nerd for most of my life. I fully believe that it’s just human nature to second guess decisions, particularly in advance of a specific deadline (like a pregnancy leading up the birth of a baby). We are always going to wonder “could it be better?” or “is this right?” though sometimes more than other times. [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is a beautiful name, but if you’re feeling unsure, I would try to outdo your top choice by passively putting together some alternates. Chances are, your long time love will win out in the end anyway.
I think you may be surprised how popular [name_u]Riley[/name_u] is, so don’t just discard [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and choose [name_u]Riley[/name_u] for that reason.
There is no harm in continuing to look at names. You’re either sure or you’re not, it doesn’t matter.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Gracey[/name_f] [name_u]Abilene[/name_u]?
If you’re not sure then you’re not sure. You may end up with [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] still, or completely different name. It’s okay to keep searching, imo.
I’m new to threads so hopefully I’m replying to everyone in this. Thank you guys so much. This is such a huge decision but hearing how normal it is to keep searching and second guessing helps me so much in normalizing what I’m doing! 5 more weeks. I hope when I see her I’ll just know what’s right. Oh and today I heard someone call a little girl named [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] ‘Abs’ as her nickname - yikes!
I think [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is absolutely beautiful! There are so many wonderful girl names to choose from and you just want your little girl to have the perfect name. No harm in searching, but if you find yourself coming back to [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] you will know it’s the perfect one. It’s also a good move to have some back up names, because I’m sure you’ll know when you see her if it fits. Wishing you all the best!
When I found the right names (or they found me) I did not think about it any more, except for middles. But that might just be me.
Since you keep looking and thinking anyway, just give yourself permission to. You may not be on fire for this name and some name may grab you!

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is beautiful. I would drop [name_u]Riley[/name_u] since it rhymes with your last name and is so trendy. I hear it all the time.
Agree with the others that it’s understandable to keep looking when there are so many options. Personally I also would vote for [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. It’s classic but spunky, and actually less popular than [name_u]Riley[/name_u] when you consider all the spellings for [name_u]Riley[/name_u]. 2016 Baby Names: The Playground Analysis | Nameberry You would not have to call her abs
ETA: I also like [name_u]Abilene[/name_u] mentioned by a pp. [name_u]Abilene[/name_u] [name_u]Riley[/name_u] would be cute.
