I’m a sophomore (well - technically junior now) in high school, so these names are all on kids born from 1994 - 1998. These are just the ones that I found weird. They are all either (a) made-up names, (b) normal names with weird spellings, or (c) names that I’m just unfamiliar with. Here we go!
I know that some of these are probably just from different cultures that I’m unfamiliar with, so you’ll have to forgive my ignorance! So, your opinions? Best? Worst?
Yes, many of them are from different cultures. A lot of them are just spelled “creatively,” because that was the thing to do in the late 90s I guess. But, then there are a few that are total normal English names that I was surprised to see on your list. [name]Elmer[/name] is a real name, just terribly old-fashioned. The kid is probably not named after white school glue LOL! [name]Lorna[/name] is a real name. Believe it or not, [name]Mercedes[/name] is a real name. The car was named after a woman.
[name]Gentry[/name] is the most unusual to my eye, mother’s maiden name perhaps? [name]Hailey[/name] and its variations have been around since I was a child in the 1970s, it started with the actress [name]Haley[/name] [name]Mills[/name].
In one of my yearbooks there’s a girl named [name]Maryjane[/name] Burner. I wonder of her parents were stoners or just clueless. She was a senior in my preschool yearbook from 1998 so she was probably born between 1979-1981.
At my high school there is a [name]Merrill[/name], Nyejai, Jeamy, [name]Augustin[/name], [name]Caesar[/name], [name]Rocco[/name], [name]Nicolette[/name], Zamary, Taalibah, and [name]Blake[/name].
Growing up in southern [name_u]California[/name_u] with a childhood in the 80s and 90s adolescence, there was a lot of unisex names. We had boys named [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_u]Rain[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Remy[/name_u], [name_u]Blair[/name_u], [name_u]Ripley[/name_u], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], [name_u]Paris[/name_u], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], [name_u]Lane[/name_u], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], and [name_u]Sky[/name_u]. There were girls from elementary, middle, and high school named [name_u]Taj[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_u]Kyle[/name_u], [name_u]Ray[/name_u], [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], [name_u]Reagan[/name_u], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_u]Dallas[/name_u], [name_u]Sam[/name_u], [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], [name_u]Brett[/name_u], [name_m]Christian[/name_m], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_u]Gray[/name_u], [name_u]Evan[/name_u], [name_u]Harley[/name_u], [name_u]Kelsey[/name_u], [name_u]Nico[/name_u], and [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]. The nicknames were pretty bad too: [name_m]Skip[/name_m]/[name_m]Chip[/name_m]/[name_m]Kip[/name_m]/[name_m]Trip[/name_m], [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] (boy), [name_u]Van[/name_u], [name_u]Whit[/name_u] (boy), [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] (girl), [name_f]Kiki[/name_f], [name_m]Corkie[/name_m] (girl), Bootsy (girl), Moose (boy), [name_u]Beck[/name_u] (girl). I don’t know what our baby boomer parents were thinking.
Oh, I forgot. There were boys named Towner and [name_u]Brook[/name_u] too. Turner and Hollis also were girls I knew. Other nicknames that came to mind: Moh (pronounced Moe/short of Mohammed), Raj, Anu, Tan (girl), Bob (girl/real name Kathleen), and Ward (short of Edward).
I’m not even in high school yet, (;))but I know a female [name_m]Michael[/name_m], a [name_f]Michayla[/name_f] (Ma-[name_u]SHAY[/name_u]-la), Kylees with infinitely strange spellings, a [name_u]Justice[/name_u] with a last name that’s also a word, and waaaaaaaaaaaay too many Taylors…
[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: I also know two Arianas, one with the [name_f]AIR[/name_f] syllable that you’d expect and the other pronouncing it [name_f]AHriana[/name_f]. My name (Raevyn) probably counts too.
[name_f]EDIT[/name_f] #2: A girl in the grade below me is named Tanna, which to me is [name_m]Tanner[/name_m] said wrong.
Hey! My name is Andrue! I stumbled on this post trying to find if anyone else has their name spelled like mine. I was born in '95 so I was wondering if we went to the same high school I was a senior in 2013 (and graduated that year as well) I wonder if we went to the same high school. If not that means I’m not the only one spelled Andrue!
