Weirdest reasoning behind names

I’m just curious what some of the strangest (or coolest!) reasoning is you have heard behind certain name choices. For examples, I have a [grown] cousin named [name_m]Levi[/name_m] [name_m]Garrett[/name_m] because his mom craved [name_m]Levi[/name_m] [name_m]Garett[/name_m] chewing tobacco while she was pregnant. I also went to school with a girl named [name_f]Demi[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]; her last name was Wear [like denim jean wear, wearing denim jeans].

[name_u]Jem[/name_u] [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] and [name_f]Lileas[/name_f] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]- The parents loved the Arthurian legends of [name_m]Merlin[/name_m], and they fell in love at a book club over To Kill a Mockingbird ([name_u]Jem[/name_u]), which I thought was really sweet.

[name_u]Eden[/name_u] (my sister)- As well as being the obvious Garden of [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_u]Eden[/name_u] is the name of my father’s favourite diving spot.

[name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]- Her mum prayed to be able to carry a baby to term, and when she opened her eyes from her prayer, she saw a shooting star.

[name_u]Domino[/name_u]- After the [name_m]Bond[/name_m] girl.

The [name_m]Melbourne[/name_m] Cup is the ‘race that stops the nation’ in Australia, and a friends mother was due pretty close to the race and so she said she will name her child after whichever horse wins. The horses name was something rain, and so her son’s middle name was [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] because thats as close as she would get to rain.
I’ve also been told another about naming the child after what the mother was craving. I personally love these stories! I think it makes a name so much more meaningful than a name ‘just because I liked it’

[name_f]My[/name_f] brother and my dad have the same first name, [name_m]Robert[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother’s middle name, [name_u]Shaun[/name_u] (the name he has always been called), is after my mom’s teenage heart throb, [name_u]Shaun[/name_u] [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] (70’s singer and actor). One of my dad’s favorite actors is [name_m]Sean[/name_m] [name_u]Connery[/name_u], so his middle is sort of after him too, but my mom got to spell it the way she wanted. lol

Loving these stories.

That’s interesting–there’s a character called [name_u]Jem[/name_u] [name_u]Merlyn[/name_u] in the book [name_f]Jamaica[/name_f] Inn.

I think the weirdest name reasoning in my family is that my grandmother named my uncle after her first love, who got drafted, and then she never heard from him again (turned out her mother was hiding his letters to her–she got Notebook-ed!) His name was [name_m]Richard[/name_m].

Meanwhile, my other grandmother middle-named my father after a soap opera character. Sigh.

I was named [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].
[name_f]My[/name_f] mothers favorite singer is [name_m]Julio[/name_m] Iglesias. She grew up listening to him and as a teenager she heard one of his song called [name_f]Nathalie[/name_f] and she fell in love - had to name her future daughter [name_f]Natalie[/name_f]. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is to honor my grandmother.

[name_f]My[/name_f] little sister got named [name_f]Patricia[/name_f] after a neighbor had a little daughter named [name_f]Patricia[/name_f] and my mother like the sound of it. (Mother stole the name!)

[name_f]My[/name_f] second youngest sister is named Yudelka (I think it’s a Hebrew name but unsure) . [name_f]My[/name_f] mother and her best friend got pregnant at the same time but her best friend had a miscarriage and to honor her best friend and the baby she lost. [name_f]My[/name_f] little sister was named after her. My mother best friend got pregnant a year after and named her daughter after me!

[name_m]Anthony[/name_m], the only boy, was named after a cartoon.

And the final sibling on the way, a girl will be named [name_f]Dulce[/name_f] “[name_f]Esme[/name_f]” [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]. [name_f]Dulce[/name_f] after my great grandmother and [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] after a novela my parents use to watch.

[name_f]My[/name_f] parents did not have a name picked out for me when I was born, for three weeks I had no name. [name_f]My[/name_f] uncle (moms brother) mentioned that if he ever has a little girl he would name her after the Mexican Soap actress [name_f]Angelica[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom and dad stole it, and that’s my first name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] friend [name_f]Denisse[/name_f] got her name when her parents could not settle on a name, or rather had no idea of what to name her, so they decided that they would use the first female name they heard when turning on the television.

[name_u]True[/name_u] story. Everything considered I think she got lucky with [name_f]Denisse[/name_f].

A friend of mine is named [name_f]Sandra[/name_f] and her older brother is named [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]. They go by [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] and [name_u]Danny[/name_u], and [name_f]Sandra[/name_f] told me her parents were huge Grease fans.

[name_f]My[/name_f] Grandfather’s mn was [name_m]Raines[/name_m] after the last name of the Dr. who came out to the house in the middle of the night to help deliver him during a difficult birth. [name_f]My[/name_f] father and nephew share the same mn and so will my first boy. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin is planning on using it as well for his soon to be born daughter.

[name_f]My[/name_f] friend is [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] (though she goes by [name_u]Alex[/name_u]) and her brother is [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] after [name_f]Empress[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] and Emperor [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] (the Romanovs). She doesn’t have Russian heritage at all but her parents really love Russian history. The names are totally normal but such an awful, tragic family to name children after! And I’ve always found it kind of creepy to have siblings named after famous couples.
