Welcome to Westeros

Okay so I’m a huge fantasy nerd and I’ve been looking at names connected with my favorite book series. I’m big on using names from novels and after finding my perfect “LOTR but not” name ([name_f]Elowen[/name_f]) I wanted to find a potential name that sounds like it just walked out of Westeros but it still functional in the real world.

Here are some of the names that I adore if you have any suggestions with the same feel or if you find any of these usable I would love to hear it  I know a lot of his names are more common place to an extent but I also feel like they have a fantasy element about them.

[name_f]Daenerys[/name_f]
[name_f]Sansa[/name_f]
[name_u]Bran[/name_u]
[name_u]Shae[/name_u]
Brienne
Gendry
Margaery
Eddard
[name_u]Jaime[/name_u]
Aerys
Lyanna
Rickon
[name_u]Arya[/name_u]- this is our #1 girl name but I’m torn on spelling! Aria Estellise or Arya Estellise?

Also does Elowen Daenerys work as a name? I’m really crushing on this combo…

Obviously there are quite a few more but I can’t remember them all so I may add to the list. Please excuse the nerdiness of these names, I can’t help myself! Also this is more of an “I love the name” vs “I love the character”

Here’s some names that I’ve come across that have the GoT feel…So far they’re all female names
Daenyra - Found this one in a forum on NB
Rheana
Faeryn

I went for the “GoT but not” feel… vowel-heavy for the girls. The boy names are harder to pin down but I feel like maybe there are some contenders. All the names are legit, and Basque, Manx, Occitan, Catalan, [name_m]Breton[/name_m], Turkish, Greek, Cornish, or Welsh.

Aderyn
[name_f]Ainhoa[/name_f]
[name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]

Itsasne/ Itxasne
[name_f]Magali[/name_f]
Maialen
Megaera
[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Nerea[/name_f]
Tesni

[name_m]Aitor[/name_m]
Andras
Aneirin
[name_m]Cadoc[/name_m]
Einion

[name_m]Imanol[/name_m]
Meuric

[name_m]Oriol[/name_m]
Pierrick
Yorath
[name_m]Zorion[/name_m]

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I agree, boy names seem to be a bit more difficult to find without being totally outlandish.

Brienne and Eddard are on our long list and Brienne is pretty high on our short list too. Eddard was struck off because of the flow with our surname.

I think most of them are usable, and some have become very common like Ayra.

I adore [name_f]Aria[/name_f]/[name_u]Arya[/name_u]! Brienne is also one I love although it’s not really my style so I don’t think I’d use it. Eddard is so handsome! In that case the character connection only made it better for me  I also adore [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] but I feel like it would be so horribly shunned (and I actually know a [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] from a girl in High School…I wish I knew her well enough to ask what reaction she got when she named her baby).

I, too, adore [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] but surname begins with D and I personally I don’t like double initials, especially when it would be DD for a girl - I’d worry as a teenager they’d be teased about bra sizes constantly!

Oh gosh, those initials might be a pain during puberty! DD [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f]…ugh. [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] is honestly a name I adore and I add it to my list then feel shame and take it off. A part of me says it’s not usable and another part says it’s wonderful. I never really have issues like that with names so it’s frustrating! If we used it our daughter would have my initials which would be cute

I love Oberyn and Aemon. I would probably use [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] and [name_m]Eamon[/name_m] instead, though.

Oh I forgot about Aemon, I really love that one! I love the Oberyn spelling but I think [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is more functional. I’m so glad you brought these two to my attention!

Totally manned up and messaged a girl I went to HS with about her daughter named [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] and the reactions that she got with the name. I’m really hoping that her reply makes the name more usable in my eyes and she doesn’t think I’m a total weirdo! xD

The Ae- starting names are some of my favourite in Westeros, like Aemon, Aerys, Aegon. Also I adore [name_u]Elia[/name_u] and am keeping it in the back of my head in case I ever have a daughter

I love the AE names as well! [name_u]Elia[/name_u] is gorgeous and I think will blend in nicely with more normal names without being bland or unnoticed.

[name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] could be [name_f]Danae[/name_f], Daenissa, [name_f]Neryssa[/name_f]
[name_f]Sansa[/name_f] could be Sîansa ([name_u]Shan[/name_u]-sah), [name_u]Seren[/name_u], Sirona, Sîonsan ([name_u]Shahn[/name_u]-sen)
[name_u]Bran[/name_u] is actually a character from Welsh mythology, but could be [name_m]Brand[/name_m], [name_f]Bren[/name_f]
[name_u]Shae[/name_u] could be [name_u]Shea[/name_u], [name_u]Shay[/name_u], [name_f]Shayna[/name_f], Shayniss
Brienne could be [name_f]Brienna[/name_f], Trienne, Bryone, [name_f]Brione[/name_f], [name_f]Briona[/name_f], Bryona
Gendry could be Genter, Kendry, Jenden, Keladry
Margaery could be [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f], [name_f]Magali[/name_f], Marared, Marsali
Eddard could be Treddard, Edred, Edwerth
[name_u]Jaime[/name_u] could be Jerem, [name_u]Jem[/name_u], Jayn
Aerys could be [name_u]Aeron[/name_u], [name_f]Aerin[/name_f], Mairys
Lyanna could be [name_f]Lynnea[/name_f], Lyllina,
Rickon could be [name_m]Ricard[/name_m], Dickon, Dirken
[name_u]Arya[/name_u] could be [name_u]Adria[/name_u], [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f], Arianrhod, Arianwenna, Arwenna, Arwynna, Arwynnia

Some of these are actual names & others I made up…

Two of my favorite names ever came from a fantasy trilogy from [name_m]Garth[/name_m] [name_f]Nix[/name_f]…Sabriel & Liriel.

Some of my favorite names from the ASOIAF series:

Nymeria
Ashara
[name_u]Arya[/name_u]
[name_f]Meera[/name_f]
Obella
[name_f]Arianne[/name_f]
Lyarra

Benjen
[name_m]Theon[/name_m]
Rhaegar
Tommen
Jojen
Oberyn
Jorah

Thank you so much for all of the lovely suggestions!

I think I have a book on my shelf called Sabriel. Liriel is a very pretty name, sounds similar to Lyrical which gives it a nice musical feel to me.

I love all of those names! [name_f]Aria[/name_f]/[name_u]Arya[/name_u] is actually our #1 name. Still undecided on spelling - I love [name_u]Arya[/name_u] and the character connection but I feel [name_f]Aria[/name_f] looks better with our middle “Estellise”. I’m glad I’m not pregnant because I keep flip flopping so badly!

I really love Benjen, [name_m]Theon[/name_m], and Tommen especially from that list. [name_f]Meera[/name_f] is a beautiful name as well although I’m not sure of the “ee” in the middle. [name_f]Mira[/name_f] looks lovely but I think it’d be pronounced My-rah

Heard back from the girl with a daughter named [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] and she said other than people asking how it’s spelled she have gotten nothing but compliments. Makes me a little more eager to use it as a middle.
