We're pregnant! Now things are getting serious...down to two names!

I am going to be due with my third baby this winter and now the name talk is getting more serious!

We’ve narrowed it down to either [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] or [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] for a girl.

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] pro: Less common of a name than [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (in my state at least).

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] con: Hate the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and worried it would be inevitable once she started school.

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] pro: Lots of adorable nicknames that don’t feel as “tired” or trendy as [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] con: Top 30 name in my state, which is typically more popular that we like.

Sibling names are M@rg0t and L30 (please don’t type full names in responses!)

So which do you prefer and why? Thank you so much!

I think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is prettier. However, I think [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is inevitable.

There’s an [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] in my daughter’s class who goes by her full name.

While I generally prefer [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and think that you could get away with the nickname [name_f]Essie[/name_f], I think it’s too similar to L30 for comfort. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is pretty and the nicknames are great as well; in fact, the only issue is the ending. For good measure, I’d like to suggest [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f].

I like [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and think that it’s short enough and unusual enough that people wouldn’t automatically do a nickname. You could use [name_u]Lou[/name_u] if you want to head off [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. Also if there are a ton of Ellies in her class people might steer away from adding another one. I think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] goes better with the siblings since it has a sophisticated and [name_m]French[/name_m] flair, whereas [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is more cute.

Both are lovely but I vote for [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]! I don’t think [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is inevitable. My name is [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and my mom hates the nickname [name_f]Em[/name_f]. A few people in my life have called me that on occasion, but it’s rare! I don’t see why a little [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] couldn’t go by her full name!

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]! I think if you tell people that you are calling her [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and not [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], they will respect that. However, I don’t think it’s inevitable that it will be shortened.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]! I vote [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] over [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a personal preference. I think you can avoid the nicknames you don’t like. I have a 3 syllable name and never used a nickname.

Thank you all!

My favorite nickname for [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is [name_f]LuLu[/name_f] but maybe that’s too close to my son’s name?

They are both beautiful, but my choice would be [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

Have you considered [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]?

I think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] fits best with your sib set. I think she’d be more likely to have her name shortened to [name_f]Elle[/name_f] than [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], since there isn’t an “ee” sound in the name and I happen to love [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. I do think if you have a nickname ready ([name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f]), you can head off one made up by someone else! Congrats, by the way!

I was actually going to suggest [name_f]Lu[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_u]Eloise[/name_u].

Out of the 2 names I think both are lovely, but I’d have to vote [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (because it’s less common where I live and I like the nn [name_u]Penny[/name_u]).

I think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is too similar to L30… of the two names I prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

Here are some others to consider,

M@rg0t, L30 and…

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Noemi[/name_f]
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogene[/name_f]
Rowenna
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]

I don’t think you could avoid [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] with [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. M@rgot, L3o, and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] would be sweet. [name_u]Nori[/name_u] would be a great nickname!

I much prefer [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. There are plenty of other nickname options ([name_f]Essie[/name_f], [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Louise[/name_f]/[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]) so that hopefully you could steer away from [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

What about [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]? It’s kind of a mix of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] but are significantly less popular and no [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]?

My vote is for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], especially with her siblings’ names.

Definitely [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]… I love it. It’s been on my top girls list for years! The name itself it’s beautiful, but there is also so many nicknames to choose from as well! [name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_u]Nelly[/name_u] etc. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!! Also, it is getting quite popular, but not as popular as [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. There’s 6 [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]'s in one of my classes at school! :grimacing:

I think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] goes best with your other children’s names. If you’re worried about her being called [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], you can remind people it’s [name_f]Elouise[/name_f] or compromise with a nickname you prefer, such as [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]LuLu[/name_f], or Weezie (my grandmother [name_f]Louise[/name_f]'s nickname).

I prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] with your kids’ names.
