I used to think [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] was orr-uh-lee-uh

When I was small, just starting to read chapter books, I was mystified by the name [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]. I thought, “Why would anyone like the name Chole?” (I thought it was pronounced like “choke,” but with an L where the K is!)

[name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f]. Can’t spell it, can’t say it, and don’t want to.

[name_m]Aloysius[/name_m] is one I pronounced wrong for a long time.

I also grew up with a [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] who pronounced it DELL-uh-nee and I had no idea most people said deh-LAYN-ee for a long time. I still think both pronunciations are nice.

I’m sure there are others I’m forgetting, too.

Some of mine:

[name_u]Idris[/name_u] as eye-driss instead of ih-driss/id-riss

[name_f]Tesni[/name_f] as tez-nee instead of tess-nee

[name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] as eh-lye-duh instead of ay-lee (this was from one glance, without really thinking - I should have known better)

When I was little I thought [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] was purse-eh-phone and I remember reading a book as a kid with a character [name_u]Zoe[/name_u] and thought it was just zoh

The first time I saw [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] in a [name_f]Junie[/name_f] B. [name_m]Jones[/name_m] book, I thought it was pronounced loo-cyuh-lee. Then I thought loo-seal was too short for such a preppy, over-the-too character.

[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] - I thought this was “is old”… tbf the actual pronunciation doesn’t remind me of “is old” any less tho

[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] - I said this “muh-LAWCH-ee”

[name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f] - “uh-lye-uh” (and I still think this is prettier than Aleah)

[name_f]Noemi[/name_f] - “no-mee”

[name_u]Romy[/name_u] - “rom-ee” instead of “row-mee”

I used to think [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] was “BO-heem” and I pronounced [name_f]Briony[/name_f] like “Bree-uh-nee”. :honeybee:

I thought it was “en-DYE-mee-on” but I’ve always heard everyone else say “en-DIM-ee-on”.

for the longest time I thought Tallulah was pronounced like it rhymed with Hallelujah but began with a T, no clue why i thought that. :woman_shrugging:

wait, then how do you pronounce Briony? because that’s what i’ve been thinking too :sob:

Someone said it’s “BRY-uh-nee”, with the first syllable sounding like [name_m]Brian[/name_m]. :smiling_face_with_tear:

I thought [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] was FOBE and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] was A-bi-jail as a child. And [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m] as a-LOI-zee-us.

en-DIM-ee-on is the most common English pronunciation, yes. We say en-dih-MEE-on / en-duh-MEE-on though.
