Definitely Antigone and Ismene. Great names, albeit difficult to pronounce without direction.
however, the connection to Oedipus Rex makes them complete guilty pleasures

context, w/ spoilers

basically, in the greek tragedy Oedipus Rex, Antigone and Ismene are Oedipus’ children, who he had with Iocaste (jo-cast), not knowing that Iocaste is his mother. Antigone ends up dying in the next play (named Antigone). it’s a very weird play but I definitely recommend it.

Mine would be Noctiluca.
Noctiluca Scintillans is a type of bioluminescent sea algae that glows when disturbed. It’s marvelous to look at, and seeing bioluminescence is an amazing experience.

These photos aren’t mine, by the way

I LOVE Antigone. It’s in my own GP list. I’d use it as a MN if I could ever get SO on board. But between pronunciation issues and it having the appearance of “anti gone” it’s a no-go sadly.

That’s neat, and bioluminescence is definitely cool! I think it could potentially work as a MN. It has the more elaborate and complicated look of a mythological name and ends with the familiar -luca.

I’ve seen you post about Noctiluca before and you’ve really got me crushing on it too! I hope you’re confident enough to use it in the first place because I would love being friends with a Noctiluca!

Today my gp is Farolito wich means little lantern in spanish and is another name for luminarias. It sounds so sweet and cool to me. I also love [name_u]Dandelion[/name_u], [name_u]Taliesin[/name_u], and [name_m]Petrichor[/name_m]

Oh my gosh, reading your reply made my day. Thank you :two_hearts: I’ve actually considered Noctiluca before, so who knows, maybe you will get to be friends with a little Noctiluca someday :relaxed:

Kaz! I can force Caz as a nickname for [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], but oh how I wish Kaz was a name in its own right… :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is also on my GP list. It was so nearly a go until someone informed me that there are two cities in [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], USA with these names… [name_f]My[/name_f] Kiwi self would have never guessed!

I recently thought [name_f]Ella[/name_f] and [name_f]Eve[/name_f] would be the cutest twin names… Two issues:

[name_f]My[/name_f] real name is VERY similar to [name_f]Ella[/name_f], and people would be confused.
[name_f]My[/name_f] #1 baby name is [name_f]Evaluna[/name_f], and we can’t have an [name_f]Eve[/name_f] AND an Evaluna…

Okay, actual GPs that people might actually relate to…

Girls

  • [name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f] (Hebrew) “Daughter of an oath”
  • [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] (Greek) “Gold flower”
  • [name_u]Endellion[/name_u] (Cornish place name)
  • [name_f]Galilea[/name_f] (Italian) “Galilee”
  • [name_f]Hephzibah[/name_f] (Biblical) “My delight is in her”

Boys

  • Adelmar (Ancient Germanic) “Noble; famous”
  • Hopestill (Puritan virtue name)
  • [name_u]January[/name_u] (English word name)’
  • [name_m]Josephus[/name_m] (Dutch) “He will add”
  • [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] (Hungarian) “Glorious ruler”

I’m pretty bold, but [name_m]Napoleon[/name_m] feels unusable. I also really like [name_f]Elsinore[/name_f], but I’m dead set on naming a girl [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], and it feels too [name_m]Hamlet[/name_m].

yeah, especially considering Napoleon was a (relatively) bad leader. not a good connection. But I adore nn Leo/Leon :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

my gps are definitely Antigone and Ismene right now haha
luckily I’ll never have kids anyways but the origin of the names annoys me lol

I really love the sound and look of [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], but it has a not very nice meaning in many other languages that makes it unusable for me :sob: rendering it a GP
