what are you favorite legend/mythology names?

I like names such as [name]Ariadne[/name], [name]Isolde[/name], [name]Leander[/name], [name]Tristan[/name]. So what are your favorite legend/mythology names (greek, roman, celtic, etc.)

Well, being an absolute sucker for the heritage of my country, and Scandinavia in general, obviously I too am a sucker for names from the Norse mythology (more thorough list in my signature, if anyone’s interested):

Magne (Magni): The son of [name]Thor[/name] and brother of Modi (Móði), his name is meaning “strong”.
[name]Njord[/name] (Njörðr): Norse god, and father of Frej (Freyr) and [name]Freja[/name] (Freyja), he’s strongly associated with the sea and is generally thought to be the Norse [name]Poseidon[/name].
Fenris (Fenrir): The gigantic wolf, and son of Loke ([name]Loki[/name]).
Loke ([name]Loki[/name]): [name]Both[/name] a god and a jötunn, was good friends with the other gods until he causes the death of [name]Odin[/name]'s favourite son, Balder (Baldr).
Frej (Freyr): [name]Son[/name] of [name]Njord[/name] (Njörðr) and brother of [name]Freja[/name] (Freyja), associated with kingship and prosperity. His name means “lord”.

[name]Saga[/name] (Sága): A Norse goddess, her name means “seeress”.
Gefion (Gefjun): A Norse goddess who created the Danish island, Zealand. Her name means “giving”.
Røskva: [name]Sister[/name] of Tjalfe (Þjálfi) and servant to [name]Thor[/name]. Her name is meaning “grow”.
Frigg: Norse goddess, wife of [name]Odin[/name] and mother of Balder (Baldr), meaning “love”.
Embla: [name]One[/name] of the two first human beings created by the gods (the female of the two, with the male being Ask). Presumed to mean “elm tree” (where Ask means “ash tree”), but there’s still some uncertainty about the etymology of the name.

[name]Ariadne[/name], [name]Isis[/name], [name]Saga[/name], [name]Juno[/name], [name]Orion[/name], and [name]Phoenix[/name], plus [name]Echo[/name] and [name]Hero[/name] as guilty pleasures. I’m probably missing some, there are a lot of really good ones. Some of them are even better because of their stories- [name]Isis[/name], for example, traveled the world to pick up the pieces of her murdered husband, then put them back together to revive him. I’m not a terribly eloquent storyteller, but it’s a really beautiful myth.

I really am going to love looking up the legends of the names I don’t know.
I am really liking [name]Njord[/name] and [name]Saga[/name].
I have always been a fan of [name]Echo[/name] (one of the first myths I ever heard) and [name]Hero[/name].

All of them. But actually, quite a few.

[name]Andromeda[/name]
[name]Ajax[/name]
[name]Amaryllis[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
Arianrhod
[name]Atalanta[/name]
[name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]Cleo[/name]/[name]Clio[/name]
[name]Dana[/name]ë
[name]Diana[/name]
[name]Emrys[/name]
[name]Finbar[/name]
[name]Galatea[/name]
[name]Ismene[/name]
Ishtar
[name]Isis[/name]
[name]Nydia[/name]
[name]Orpheus[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name]
[name]Phaedra[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Sheherazade[/name]
[name]Taliesin[/name]
[name]Thisbe[/name]
Tiamat

For most of them, I like the story. For a few, I’m not a fan of the story but love the name.

[name]Loki[/name]
[name]Gawain[/name]
[name]Tristan[/name]
Líadan
Fenrir

Ahh, I can’t recall all but some that I do like:
[name]Ariadne[/name]
[name]Ceridwen[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Orion[/name]

I’ll add more as I recall them.

I love me some Greek mythology names… [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Clio[/name], and [name]Thalia[/name] for starters, then [name]Andromeda[/name], [name]Perseus[/name], [name]Jason[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Hermione[/name], and [name]Athena[/name] are my other faves. I like some of the [name]Roman[/name] counterparts, too, like [name]Minerva[/name] and [name]Juno[/name]. And then the Irish classics: [name]Deirdre[/name], [name]Diarmid[/name], [name]Cormac[/name], [name]Finnian[/name], [name]Bran[/name] and [name]Branwen[/name]. Others that I love: [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Caradoc[/name], [name]Guinevere[/name], [name]Morgan[/name], [name]Robin[/name], [name]Marian[/name](yes, I consider [name]Robin[/name] Hood to be a legend… it’s older than the country I live in, after all), [name]Finn[/name], Kiviuq, and Susitna.

I tend to like all of them but my absolute favorites would have to be [name]Isolde[/name], [name]Taliesin[/name] and [name]Freya[/name].

Paniah. From the Maori myth Paniah of the sea. Also quite a few Greek ones, but my mind has gone blank at the moment.

[name]Orion[/name] and [name]Odin[/name] for boys.
[name]Guinevere[/name] and [name]Athena[/name] for girls

My baby name list is LITTERED with mythological names.

[name]Persephone[/name]
[name]Hermione[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name]
[name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Atlas[/name]
[name]Thor[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Echo[/name]

I like (but would probably never use…) [name]Isis[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Odysseus[/name], [name]Thor[/name]…

I had a friend who named her daughter [name]Echo[/name]–I always thought that was so hauntingly beautiful! I also love [name]Hero[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Maia[/name], [name]Helen/name, [name]Ariadne[/name], and [name]Penelope[/name] from Greek mythology. I’m not really up on other mythologies, so I couldn’t really say there. Although [name]Hero[/name], for me, is much more for [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s [name]Hero[/name] (Much [name]Ado[/name] about Nothing) rather than the mythological one.

[name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Aphrodite[/name]
[name]Hero[/name]

I would never use those above for a child, but those below (or a variation of them) are on my list

[name]Cassandra[/name] ([name]Cassia[/name] is one of my favourite names, and [name]Cassidy[/name] one of my favourite middle names)
[name]Calliope[/name] ([name]Calista[/name] is an all time favourite)
[name]Apolline[/name] - female version of [name]Apollo[/name] and one of my favourites
[name]Victoire[/name] - not necessarily a mythology name, but victory is related to Gods right? I love this
Maia - on my list as a middle name

[name]Ajax[/name]
[name]Apollo[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]
[name]Icarus[/name]

[name]Andromeda[/name]
[name]Astrid[/name]
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Hero[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name]
[name]Persephone[/name]
[name]Thalassa[/name]

[name]Andromeda[/name] has been on my guilty pleasure list for years
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Eurydice[/name]
[name]Hestia[/name]
And how I wish [name]Medea[/name] wasn’t so completely unusable, I adore the way it sounds.

Growing up I was a little bit obsessed with myth - some of my fav names include:
Lugh
[name]Niamh[/name]
Lenus - which I have heard pronounced as both [name]LEE[/name]-nus and [name]LAY[/name]-nus, both of which I think can make for an interesting take on the currently very hip [name]Linus[/name]
[name]Daire[/name] - which is male but I find it more feminine
[name]Aengus[/name]
[name]Cian[/name]
Ares - I really like but could never give a child such a heavy violent namesake, im a tad superstitious like that
[name]Vesta[/name]

plus i dont know if i can actually count lord of the rings but I have always loved the name Beren from its mythology!

I have always wanted to name a daughter [name]Artemis[/name].
I just think its a really cool name (and name sake :))

I love [name]Athena[/name] and [name]Ariadne[/name]
