What are your favorite girls' names and why?

[name]Josephine[/name], [name]Annelise[/name], [name]Guinevere[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name] - I like all of these names for their elegent but pretty sound and adorable nicknames, ([name]Josie[/name], [name]Annie[/name], [name]Gwen[/name], [name]Bea[/name]/[name]Trixie[/name])

[name]Charity[/name] - I love the sound of this name, also it has vintage charm with a great meaning.

[name]Edith[/name], [name]Agatha[/name] - Hardly used classic names with a strong but sweet sound and cute nicknames ([name]Aggie[/name] and [name]Edie[/name])

[name]Albany[/name] - Quite different from my other favourites but I love the strong yet pretty sound.

[name]Leia[/name] and [name]Linnea[/name]: These names are too similar to use for sisters which is sad because I love them both. [name]Both[/name] are sweet without being frilly. They both just roll of the tongue with a very soft feel. I also love Sci-Fi so I like the connection that [name]Leia[/name] has to that. I like that neither a very popular.

[name]Maeve[/name]: Again short and sweet. I was born in [name]May[/name] so I like that connection. I also like that it has the ay-v sound because way back in the early 90s before [name]Ava[/name] was popular it was my favorite name (it was a friend’s mother’s name and I feel in love) and it also has the ay-v sound. I like that it is Irish as 75% of my heritage is Irish and my SO has ancestors from there too. I am concerned with the popularity of this name. In Massachusetts (where I live) it is in the top 100 for girls.

[name]Anya[/name]/[name]Aine[/name]: Again another short sweet name. It’s not frilly but it’s very feminine sounding. I like that [name]Aine[/name] is the Irish spelling but I dislike that many people would not readily know that it pronounced the same as [name]Anya[/name]. I like that it has had a steady popularity in the US of around 350-550 since 2000. Also my SO’s grandmother was named [name]Antionette[/name] nn [name]Annie[/name] and [name]Anya[/name] is a form of [name]Anne[/name] or [name]Anna[/name]. My sister and mother both have [name]Anne[/name] as their middle name.

[name]Annelise[/name]: Again an [name]Anna[/name]/[name]Anne[/name] name so I like the family ties. It’s longer than most names I love but it’s not frilly like [name]Arabella[/name] (which I love but would never use because it’s too princessy for me).

[name]Isla[/name]: Again love it simplicity and beauty. It’s short and sweet. It will age well. I don’t like that it has sky rocketed into popularity from 623 to 268 in 3 years. I fear that it will become more popular and that it will too popular for me to want to use it.

[name]Lila[/name]: Same as [name]Isla[/name]. It’s simple but elegant. It’s short and sweet. It flows out the mouth with a very soft, delicate sound.

I like that all of my names (except [name]Annelise[/name]) is short enough that they don’t really need nicknames.

But then again I also love [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Vivienne[/name], [name]Genevieve[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Guinevere[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name], and [name]Emiliana[/name] which are all longer names. I also love the nicknames that go with these names.

[name]Isabelle[/name]. I love its femininity, without being too frilly, I love that it’s French (my best friend was French, and passed away a little over a year ago, so it’s sort of a nod to her), I love that it sort of relates to the story of when [name]Mary[/name] visited [name]Elizabeth[/name] while they were both pregnant and [name]John[/name] jumped in [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s womb because even then he could sense that [name]Jesus[/name] was there. I love the option of the nn [name]Belle[/name]/[name]Bella[/name], which mean “beautiful”. I love that it’s familiar, but not as overdone as [name]Isabella[/name] (which I’m really starting to miss on my list! I used to adore [name]Isabella[/name].).

[name]Arianne[/name]. I love that it means “very holy one.” I love the nn [name]Ari[/name]. I love that it’s also French, and pairs really well with [name]Isabelle[/name]. I love the way [name]Arianne[/name] sounds on my tongue, too. I just really love [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Arianne[/name] together.

[name]Olivia[/name]. I love the nns [name]Olive[/name] and [name]Liv[/name]/[name]Livy[/name]. I love the olive branch/peace symbolism with the name, the fact that the meaning has to do with elves (and can thus be a connection to [name]Christmas[/name]–my sister and I both have [name]Christmas[/name] names, so I like that that would connect [name]Olivia[/name] to [name]Christmas[/name], too). I love the connection to [name]Shakespeare[/name]–Twelfth [name]Night[/name] is my favorite Shakespearean play. And I just love the idea of [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Arianne[/name], and [name]Olivia[/name] for three sisters, I think they’re perfect together. I have for years, and my mind hasn’t changed one bit.

[name]Violet[/name]. I love it because both my grandmother’s and my favorite color is purple, and violets are the birth flower of my dad and other grandmother. Violets are some of my favorite flowers. I think they’re beautiful. And I think the name [name]Violet[/name] is just so dainty and pretty and charming, I would love to have a [name]Violet[/name] one day!

[name]Rachel[/name]. I’ve just always loved [name]Rachel[/name], I don’t know why. I always liked the story of [name]Jacob[/name] and [name]Leah[/name] and [name]Rachel[/name] in the Bible, and I think [name]Rachel[/name] is very pretty with my other favorites. I know it’s sort of dated, but I still love it.

[name]Liliana[/name]. I used to just love it because I loved how feminine and frilly it was. But it also honors both my grandmothers, so I love it for that reason, too. And lilies are my very favorite flower, so I love it for that, too. I love a lot of flower names, I think it’s partially because my earliest memories of my mom were of her in her gardens, so flower names make me all nostalgic.

[name]Charlotte[/name]. I don’t really remember why I fell for it, but I’ve loved it for a long time now. I love the nn versatility, and my mom always wanted a son named [name]Charlie[/name] but never was able to have one, so I like that this is the feminine variant. It’s so lush and feminine while being understated, too.

[name]Hannah[/name]. I love the character of [name]Hannah[/name] in the Bible, and I love that this means the same thing as my grandmother’s MN ([name]Grace[/name]). I just love [name]Hannah[/name]. It’s so sweet and classic.

[name]Eleni[/name]. [name]Eleni[/name]'s the odd ball on my list, haha, she doesn’t really fit anywhere, but I love the nn [name]Leni[/name] and I like that it honors my sister since her MN is a variant of [name]Eleni[/name]/[name]Helen[/name]. I love how Mediterranean/Greek [name]Eleni[/name] is, too.

And I’m torn for number 10 on my list. It’d be one of these:

[name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name]. I love how French-chic it is, and I just love saying [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name]! I love the two names together, and I love the nn options of [name]Annie[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], or just [name]Soph[/name]. I love that [name]Anne[/name], again, could honor my grandma.

[name]Catherine[/name]. I love that this is also a royal name, an [name]Austen[/name] name, a true and complete classic. Besides, my mom’s name is a variant of [name]Catherine[/name], my great aunt’s name is, too, and my great-grandmother’s name was [name]Katherine[/name]. I love the nn [name]Kit[/name], too. And [name]Cate[/name].

[name]Eva[/name]. I love how short and sweet it is. I love that it means “life”, and I love the nn [name]Evie[/name]. I didn’t used to love it, but lately it’s been growing on me. It feels very classic to me, too, and charming. I’ve met quite a few lovely Evas of all ages lately, too, which hasn’t hurt.

[name]Tess[/name]. It’s quite different from my other favorites, but I think it still fits reasonably well. I love that it means “harvester”–it has a lot of lovely Biblical symbolism there, and a great Bible verse I can put on her nursery wall. It’s short and fiery and sweet all in one. Plus, my grandma had an Aunt [name]Theresa[/name], who I hear was pretty lovely, so it’d be nice to have a connection to her family, even though I never knew [name]Theresa[/name].

[name]Wren[/name]. I like it because it honors both my grandma and mom, and yet, it’s feminine without being frilly, respectable, classy, and yet has a little je ne sais quoi… I really love it.

I’ve always thought [name]Nolie[/name] or [name]Nola[/name] were cute nicknames for [name]Magnolia[/name]. I love the name in theory and I think [name]Nolie[/name] is adorable, but my street is named [name]Magnolia[/name] and I worry that it would seem way too cheesy.

I have such a hard time with girl names! For some reason boy names are easier to find than girls for me. With girl names I’ll like a name for a few days then drop it. The only name girl name I really really love is my daughter’s name, Setra. It’s ancient egyptian…and from the one other person I know of who has it it means daughter of the sun. I like that no body has it, but it’s easy to spell/pronounce, and not totally out there. I also like Merit, which is also egyptian, so if/when I have a girl, that will probably be her name. Lets hope I have a boy next so I can use one of the 20ish names I love :). Although, hanging around here lately has been helping me with some girl name inspiration…

Some of these I saw on others posts, some are mine, and I just adore them:

[name]Emilia[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]-I really like this alternate spelling of [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Elea[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] (eh-[name]Leah[/name])-someone i really look up to is named [name]Leah[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]-I really like the literary connection
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]-ADORABLE
[name]Scarlett[/name] [name]Anne[/name] - I looove the nn [name]Scout[/name] for [name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Piper[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - [name]Piper[/name] is a fun, less common name
[name]Ivy[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] -[name]Ivy[/name] is natural, but still pretty and sweet
[name]Anne[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] (esp the nickname [name]Delia[/name])
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Philippa[/name] (technically [name]Pippa[/name] Middletow name… ) - love the nickname [name]Pippa[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]-[name]Thalia[/name] sounds rare and beautiful
[name]Lily[/name] [name]Annalise[/name]- just very sweet, [name]Annalise[/name] is lovely
[name]Sarah[/name] Aurélie - love the sweet Frenchness to it

As you can tell, I also love the name [name]Katherine[/name]. [name]Don[/name]'t know what it is, but I love the K.

[name]Riley[/name] [name]Anne[/name]

My daughters’ names are definitely at the top of my favorite list:

[name]Isabella[/name] [name]Jane[/name]: love how ultra-feminine, romantic and elegant it is. I love how it rolls off my tongue. I love that it’s a version of [name]Elizabeth[/name], which is another favorite of mine. I also love that the name has a lot of different potential nicknames that can suit any personality - [name]Isa[/name], [name]Izzy[/name], [name]Bella[/name], [name]Belle[/name] and [name]Ella[/name]. I paired my daughter’s name with [name]Jane[/name] because it is strong and classic and strengthens the frilliness of the first name.

[name]Vanessa[/name] [name]Rose[/name]: love that like [name]Isabella[/name] it is also ultra-feminine, romantic and elegant. I love how it rolls off my tongue. I love that [name]Vanessa[/name] has a spunky side to it. I love that it’s a literary name that has been around since the 18th century, but is underused (despite the brief spike it experienced in the 1980’s, but it never made it into the top 40 in the US, and in my area never even got past 77 most popular) I love that it’s a genus of butterflies. I love the famous associations I have with the name, especially [name]Vanessa[/name] [name]Bell[/name], [name]Vanessa[/name] Redgrave, [name]Vanessa[/name] [name]Carlton[/name] and [name]Vanessa[/name] Paradis. I paired it with [name]Rose[/name] as a middle name because it is soft and classic, and it softens the spunkiness of [name]Vanessa[/name].

Other names I love:

[name]Stella[/name]: I love that it means [name]Star[/name] in Latin. I love how it rolls off my tongue. I love that it’s a romantic name, but is also strong. It makes me think of of a golden haired sweet girl.

[name]Vivienne[/name]/[name]Vivien[/name]/[name]Vivian[/name]/[name]Viviana[/name]: I love the association I have with [name]Vivien[/name] [name]Leigh[/name]. I love that it’s elegant. I love that it means alive in Latin.

[name]Lola[/name]: I love that it means strong woman, yet sounds very sweet and innocent.

[name]Ariana[/name]: I love that it has an exotic ring to it. I love that it’s a strong and elegant name. I love the nickname potential [name]Ari[/name] and [name]Ana[/name].

[name]Francesca[/name]: I love that it means free in Latin. I love how romantic this name is, but it also sounds very strong. I love to say this name. It makes me think of a beautiful girl.

[name]Valentina[/name]: I love that it means strong in Latin. Like most of the other names I love that it’s romantic yet strong. It makes me think of a beautiful girl.

[name]Gwyneth[/name] - It sounds funky but sweet, girly but not frilly, and isn’t terribly common.

[name]Elspeth[/name]/[name]Elsbeth[/name] - Such a lovely twist on the old standby [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I have a soft spot for the “th” sound in general.

[name]Thora[/name] - Strong and feminine

[name]Odette[/name] - Crisp, short, funky

My favourite name in combo is [name]Frances[/name] [name]Helene[/name] : )

Lylie - I’ve always loved the name [name]Lyle[/name], and when I thought of the name Lylie, I instantly fell in love with it. And when I told my SO about the name, I was overjoyed whenever he said he loved it too. (I do perfer the spellling Lyyli since it’s more creative, but with this spelling, I feel that people could be able to recognize it more because it looks so close to [name]Kylie[/name].)

[name]Peri[/name] - I never really thought or cared for the name much whenever I overheard it on the Disney show [name]Phineas[/name] and Ferb, or whenever I read it as a side character in my favorite book The Probabilities of Miracles, but whenever I saw it on Nameberry–in this spelling–I fell in love with it. It was so cute! And I just adore surnames/boys’ names for girls, plus I’m drawn to -i/-ie/-y/-ee names.

[name]Magnolia[/name] - I just love the sound, and [name]Nola[/name] is a cute nickname.

[name]Alma[/name] [name]Cecily[/name] - It has a very old fashioned charm for me, and I think it’ll age very well.

[name]Clementine[/name]/[name]Clemency[/name] - [name]Just[/name] a fantastic sound [name]IMO[/name]! I think it’s so sweet, but not overly frilly.

My daughter’s name, [name]Maria[/name]. Classic, timeless.

“[name]Maria[/name]…[name]Say[/name] it loud and there’s music playing, say it soft, and it’s almost like praying.” -[name]West[/name] Side [name]Story[/name]

I love these names! Getting sick of [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Isabella[/name]. Astually never liked them. These sound fresh!

I love the elegance and simplicity of shorter names.

[name]Eve[/name]/[name]Eva[/name] - think they’re both stunning
[name]Ada[/name]/[name]Ava[/name] - love the sound and the way they look (and that they’re both palindromes!)
[name]Ella[/name] - have always loved this name
[name]Rose[/name] - classic
[name]May[/name] - beautiful
[name]Grace[/name] - gorgeous meaning
[name]Stella[/name] - elegant but also has energy
[name]Ruby[/name] - so rich sounding

Some of the longer names I love are [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Olivia[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name].

This is awkward, but I think my favorite is my own name: Kate. I’m not sure what to do with how vain that makes me feel, but it’s the honest truth. Ever since I came to terms with that, I have tried to find another name like Kate, but different, obviously. A Kate can be anyone, but is probably classic, strong, spunky, sweet, and it can work on any age. The closest I have come are:

Lucy: Classic, strong, feminine, spunky, with lots of historical and literary ancestry. I’m not sure, however, how I feel about it on a grown woman. Lucy Pevensie wears this one in my heart and she will always be a little girl to me.

Lake: This one has a lot of the same letters as “Kate” and many of the same sounds, but a very different vibe since it is a word/nature name. I love how short and strong and yet common sense it is as a name. It’s also gorgeous and one of a kind.

Elena: This one has a very different feel, obviously, but the more I see it, the more I like it. I used to love Elizabeth, and Elena is kind of a grown up and slightly more unusual version. I’m not sure, however, if just anyone can wear it. An Elena might need to be sort of exotic.

Runner up: Jane- I love the history and the rarity of this name today, but I just don’t know that I could name my one of a kind baby a “plain” name. I also named my car Jane, so…

[name]Eleanor[/name]- (also the alternate spelling [name]Elanor[/name]) I love the meaning- bright, shining one, and the fact that it relates to [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Roosevelt[/name], who is my favorite woman in history. It’s a strong name with great nn options that ages well.

[name]Beatrice[/name]- She who brings happiness. This is my favorite character from [name]Shakespeare[/name] (Much [name]Ado[/name] About Nothing) Also has the adorable nn option of [name]Bea[/name].

[name]Iris[/name]- [name]Just[/name] a gorgeous name. Short and sweet, but so much color to it.

[name]Celia[/name]- Ages well, means heavenly, and again, great nn options.

[name]Genevieve[/name]- Sounds like a strong, bold woman, but it has some sort of a soft edge to it as well.

Edit:
I forgot Amelie- for the movie, and because it’s a variation of my sister’s name.

Names on my list that I would use:

[name]Celia[/name]: meaning (heavenly), literary connection, feminine but not frilly, cute nickname options (cece, celie, lia)
[name]Annabel[/name]: meaning (loving), cute nickname options (annie, anna, belle)
[name]Eloise[/name]: spunky, feminine, unique (in the US) but not unheard of, cute nickname options (elle, ellie, lola)
[name]Genevieve[/name]: feminine but strong, great meaning, feels like she would be a leader
[name]Fiona[/name]: same as [name]Eloise[/name], but less nickname options (pretty much only [name]Fee[/name])
*not sure how I never noticed before, but apparently I like names with 3 syllables!

Names I love but wouldn’t use:
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
Lelaina
[name]Marina[/name]

[name]Paige[/name] - Simple and spunky. I think it works good for both a little girl and a grown woman. Plus, it simply looks good when written down.
[name]Bridget[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] the sound of it. Elegant and gorgeous, but also very childish and spunky.
[name]Leah[/name] - Simple elegance. It looks very gorgeous and sounds sweet and flowy
[name]Laurel[/name] - As a more fresh and “grown up” alternative to [name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Anna[/name] - Classic name, looks gorgeous, “[name]Annie[/name]” nn.
[name]Mallory[/name] - Familiar, but not popular. [name]Long[/name], flowy, gorgeous name that is good for a little girl and ages well
[name]Hailey[/name] - I honestly have no idea why I love this, I think I just like the sweet and youthful sound to it

[name]Favorite[/name] combinations: [name]Paige[/name] [name]Melody[/name], [name]Bridget[/name] [name]Claire[/name], and [name]Laurel[/name] [name]Ava[/name]

I also love:
[name]Stella[/name], but it wouldn’t work with my fiance’s last name
[name]Maura[/name], but I’m 99% sure I’m going to use [name]Mark[/name] for a boy
[name]Elodie[/name], but fiance wants [name]Melody[/name] as a mn
[name]Natalie[/name], but it’s too popular

[name]Madeleine[/name] - I love the sound and spelling. [name]Love[/name] that it is classic and French. It is the perfect name to me!
[name]Elizabeth[/name] - it is the ultimate British historical name. Again I love the sound when it is spoken. I love the literary connections and how many nicknames it has. My [name]Elizabeth[/name] would be [name]Eliza[/name] or [name]Liza[/name].
[name]Rosalind[/name] - this name takes me many places. It is Shakespearean yet has a touch of retro Hollywood glamour ([name]Rosalind[/name] [name]Russell[/name]). I also love that it stems from [name]Rose[/name] and that makes it romantic and classic. I love the unexpected ending rather than the usual -ie or -a of so many girls’ names. Finally, it is a unique way to honor a ‘[name]Linda[/name].’
[name]Caroline[/name] - love the royal and princess connections, the strong yet feminine sound.

My most favorite has to be my little girl’s name: [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Mae[/name] [name]Anastasia[/name].
After that I love [name]Chiara[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Jeannette[/name], which was my vote for [name]Ruby[/name]'s name but DH shot it down and says we cannot/will not use it. Oh well.
[name]Sofia[/name]- except it’s getting so popular
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Brigid[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Arya[/name]- this and [name]Sofia[/name] are top contenders for our next girl

I tend to also love [name]Briar[/name] [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Tiger[/name] [name]Lily[/name]…if only in my dreams  DH would never allow either!

[name]Caroline[/name] - I like that it is a no-frills name. Smart, spunky, and familiar.
[name]Genevieve[/name] - Pretty but substantial. [name]Love[/name] the nicknames [name]Vivi[/name] and [name]Evie[/name]. Has a connection to my childhood.
[name]Cecelia[/name] - I adore this. It is fun to say, beautiful to write, and the nickname [name]Cece[/name] is awesome. It is hard for a little kid to say, though.
[name]Sophie[/name] - I love that it means “wisdom,” and it is soft but strong. My husband doesn’t like the popularity of [name]Sophia[/name]/[name]Sophie[/name], though.
[name]Sylvie[/name] - Fun and energetic, and a little clunky. I love it.
[name]Violet[/name] - Beautiful and smart, and purple is my favorite color. Sounds regal but not stuffy.
