What are your favorite vintage, clunky, old-fashioned, or "old lady" names?

The inspiration behind this thread is this: I have been told recently (by my Mother  ) that all of the names on my list are too grandiose and are not grounded enough to be used on an actual child. I’m still keeping my main list regardless, but I thought, why not try and create a “normal” list, just for the heck of it? By the time I’m ready to be a mummy, I may not want to bestow one of my goddess names on my baby, so having a “normal” list is probably a pretty good idea, anyways. “Vintage” names have always appealed to me, but my penchant for the more unusual won out.

I thought that instead of making a thread where the suggestions are tailored to my taste (that’s no fun!), why not ask everyone what their own personal favorites are? So, what are your favorite “vintage” names, Berries? I’m most curious! You don’t have to add why you prefer them, but if you would like to, be my guest! I look forward to seeing what everyone’s favorites are!

I’ll start us off: My favorite old-fashioned names are [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], I am predicting a huge comeback  It is top of my girls list!

Fun idea to discuss. Here’s some of my favorite old lady names that I can think of for right now now:

[name_f]Alma[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]

(Might come back later for more  )

I also love [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]!

She is spectacular, isn’t she? She’s already in the two hundreds where I am! I hope she doesn’t become the next [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]…I’m crossing my fingers.

Oh, please do! You have superb taste! [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] are especially lovely.

Really loving [name_f]Florence[/name_f], currently. It was my great-grandmother’s name and I really like it.

[name_f]Betsy[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]

Edited to add Gloria. I love Gloria!*

I love clunky names! My favourite has to be [name_f]Constance[/name_f], my great-grandma’s name. I also love [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], another family name (and her husband was a [name_m]Marmaduke[/name_m]!)

[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Agatha[/name_f]
[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] - I unashamedly love this one.

My [name_f]Nana[/name_f]'s name was [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]! I’m ecstatic to see that someone other than myself likes [name_f]Margie[/name_f]. All of the names are wonderful, thank you. [name_f]Edit[/name_f]: I, too, am a [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] lover! It’s such a beautiful name, with such a nice meaning.

Wow, you have got some real gems in your family tree! Ooh, I do love [name_f]Constance[/name_f] and [name_f]Edwina[/name_f], in particular. [name_f]Tansy[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] would be cute nicknames, methinks. [name_f]Edit[/name_f]: I forgot to say how much I love [name_f]Gertie[/name_f]! I think having a little [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] and a [name_f]Millie[/name_f] ([name_f]Mildred[/name_f]) as sisters would be delightful, but maybe it’s just me.

(Off topic: If I may say so, I love your style! The juxtaposition between the “vintage” first names and the nature-inspired middle names really gives the combinations a sense of whimsy. Your taste is perfection!)

Yay, another [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] lover! She’s such a “warm and fuzzy” name, no? Like knitted throw blankets and mugs of hot chocolate. Thank you for commenting!

[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] is darling, I can’t believe that I didn’t think of her! Magnificent list!

So many beauts! Thank you all for sharing them, I love hearing your responses! All of you have exceptional taste! It’s quite interesting to see what everyone likes.

If I may say so, thank you for having dedicating your time to working at an assisted living! There aren’t nearly enough people taking on those sorts of jobs, these days. You must have a heart of gold, and the names on your list are gold, too! I am enamoured with [name_f]Idona[/name_f]! She’s absolutely gorgeous. Those ladies have very special and lovely names, indeed.

[name_f]Hilda[/name_f] is positively darling! I don’t at all understand the hate for her and [name_f]Olga[/name_f], they’re both splendid. :frowning: Thank you for contributing to the discussion! [name_f]Doris[/name_f] is very cute!

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] and [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] would make the cutest sisters, don’t you think? Thank you most kindly for sharing your amazing list with all of us!

I think it’s high time [name_f]Sally[/name_f] made a comeback, personally. I’m glad to see she’s somebody’s favorite! Thank you for commenting!

I hope that all of you are having nice days/nights! Thank you all for your input!

I have a soft spot for ‘old lady names’, but I don’t always realize they’re considered ‘old’ until someone else tells me. Haha.

Some of my favorites I’d use:

[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]

Some I like that I’m not bold enough to go for:
[name_f]Carol[/name_f]
[name_f]Denise[/name_f]

My sister-in-law loved [name_f]Irma[/name_f] for a long time!

I love [name_f]Carol[/name_f], especially for a winter baby! I’m excited to see if [name_f]Irma[/name_f] comes back within my lifetime! I actually like [name_f]Irma[/name_f], surprisingly! Thank you for mentioning it. I’d completely forgotten about her, somehow! [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] list, thank you very much for sharing.

For what it’s worth, I don’t find any of the names in your signature to be highly unusual. Rare, maybe, but not ridiculous or unfamiliar.
