Personally, I’ve always associated the name with the novel by [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] Nabokov. However, a year ago, while I was on campus at my college, I saw the name [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] on the “honor board” there. That board has all the name of the honorary graduate carved on it. In class today, I was informed that I will be working as an intern under one of the professor, and it turned out her name is [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]. I’ve always have a soft spot for this name. After seeing the name being used in person, I was considered having my name change to [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]. Please let me know your opinion on the name below.
I would NOT use it. It has way too many negative implications and associations. It would be a nice name if pedophiles didn’t take it over, but unfortunately they did. It’s like [name_m]Adolf[/name_m], a great name on its own but too many bad associations.
Where I live, [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] is a very, very, very common name among old women, so it’s very usual to find Lolas and Lolitas (this is less common, but still) In fact, there’s a quite famous singer called [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], because her mother was [name_f]Lola[/name_f].
I don’t like [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] (it means Pains and I think it’s an awful name for a girl) but I do like [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. I don’t mind using [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] as a nickname (it’s so common here I don’t associate it with the book), but I wouldn’t register my daughter as [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], it’s just not a real name for me.
People will associate it with the novel. The risk to me is not the existence of the novel itself, but that a lot of people don’t have a very good understanding of the novel. Many do not realise that [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] was a victim of violence from the narrator. From there the name has gathered some negative associations, and pretty strong negative associations at that.
If you like the sound, I suggest…
[name_f]Adelita[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorita[/name_f]
[name_f]Solita[/name_f]
Alita
Lilita
[name_f]Marita[/name_f]
I agree with this.
Personally, any kind of erotic novel character names are off limits to me but this one is a big no. The connection with pedophilia/hebephilia (a sexual attraction to a child at the age of puberty) is absolutely dreadful.
I do know the name gets some usage in Spain, (where the novel didn’t take precedence over an already used name/nickname) as a nickname/diminutive of Delores (where Lola is derived from).
I feel like Lola is a much safer option. In terms of Lolita though, it’s a no from me.
I work with a lady named [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]. At first, it was a little strange hearing it, but I am not overly familiar with [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]'s usage in connection with erotic novels or anything, so it didn’t stick out as much to me as it could. I’m used to it now and don’t even think about its other associations when I hear her name. Unfortunately, some other people are likely to be more familiar than I was/am with [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]'s less wholesome associations, so I don’t know if it’s such a usable name anymore.
It sounds too cutesy in my opinion
I havent read the novel, the first thing that came to mind was the clothing style, which I do find to be a bad association and kind of cringe inducing
Still too Nabokov for me. And unfortunately, too pedophile as well. What about just [name_f]Lola[/name_f]?
I have never read the novel, though I’m aware of its existence. For me, [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] is just a nickname for either [name_f]Lola[/name_f] or [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] that.
I know one [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], she is around her 80s and is harsh person, however I still like the name [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] very much. My only concern is “too nickname-y?” idk
PS: [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] is one of [name_f]Mary[/name_f]'s titles: “La Virgen [name_f]Mar[/name_f]ía de los [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]” (Our Lady of Sorrows), just like [name_f]Soledad[/name_f] ("[name_f]Mar[/name_f]ía de la [name_f]Soledad[/name_f]" - Our Lady of Solitude).
I think [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] is a beautiful name and it’s a shame some fictional pedophile completely ruins it for people. It’s kind of silly, actually. It’s fiction. Also, [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] was the victim, wasn’t she? Why is her name punished for being a victim?? I just really don’t understand. I say go for it. Maybe you’ll change people’s minds about it when they meet one in person.
I love this name too but common sense says don’t use it.
Have you considered [name_f]Lalita[/name_f]?
[name_f]Lalita[/name_f] vistara is an important Buddhist text and it’s also the name of a character from hindu mythology. I don’t think people are commonly aware of this tho, so it doesn’t come off as religiously charged.
Lolana is also nice
[name_u]Read[/name_u] the novel. I would also encourage you to look up “[name_f]Lolita[/name_f]” in the [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary. This name has developed more problematic associations in our culture than a fictional hebephile.
