Hello! I just wanted to start by saying I am not actually having a baby. I’m just going over my longest name love: [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]. I have loved [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] for so many years, ever since I first heard it as the name of one of [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_m]Roosevelt[/name_m]'s son as a little kid. I also love the nickname [name_m]Archie[/name_m].
However, I know that many people think it’s the epitome of a grump, “old-man name.” If I ever tell people that I like this name, they look at me like I’m crazy. I know that [name_u]Archer[/name_u] is a sleeker, cooler, more modern way to get [name_m]Archie[/name_m], but I’ve just always liked [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]. What do you think?
I think it’s a vintage classic! I know a lot of little [name_m]Archie[/name_m]’s, I’d be very happy to hear that someone had gone to whole hog and used [name_m]Archibald[/name_m].
I love [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]! I don’t think it’s an “old-man name” at all! I especially love it with the nickname [name_m]Archie[/name_m] over [name_u]Archer[/name_u].
[name_m]Archibald[/name_m] is lovely! I think it’s an old-man name in the same way that [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] are old-men names, where they’re vintage and perfectly fine on babies. I like both [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] and [name_u]Archer[/name_u] the same.
Archibald is better than [name_u]Archer[/name_u]. With the NN [name_m]Archie[/name_m] it makes it very wearable for the younger years. Also, they will be old longer than they’ll be young.
I love that it’s a rare but super traditional name with a long and interesting history. I really don’t like the “bald” syllable either, unfortunately, but [name_m]Archie[/name_m] or [name_u]Ash[/name_u] would be sweet and fresh nicknames.
I love that you love this name. It isn’t for me personally (I can’t get past the bald part), but I think it has so many positive points:
it’s familiar yet underused
it’s got intuitive spelling/pronunciation
it’s a full name with a great nickname!
Don’t let the haters get in your head. You were right to ask the nameberry community because berries understand that just because we won’t use the name ourselves, doesn’t mean that it’s not a good name. A lot of people who aren’t into names don’t really get that. They mistake you telling them a name you like as you asking if they think you should use it (because they like it). Stick with the berries. We’ve got your back.
This is a very usable name. As long as you and your partner agree on it, that’s all that matters. And if you announce it as your son’s name one day, that’s when everyone else will love it too
I like [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]!! I don’t really think “old man” I think of [name_m]Nate[/name_m] [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] It feels more complete than [name_u]Archer[/name_u].
This is really nice to hear! I love that on Nameberry names are always appreciated. And I totally agree that just because I don’t like a name doesn’t mean can’t recognize it’s value!
I like it when it’s associated as a classic, vintage name. I also really love the nn [name_m]Archie[/name_m] and [name_u]Archer[/name_u]. However I’m not sure about [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] as a name on its own, I’ve never really loved it as I think the ‘bald’ puts me off. But the name is pretty and you should go with whatever you like and personality I don’t think it’s an ‘old man’ name, it’d be gorgeous on a youngster!
I like a lot of “old man” names myself but unfortunately the “bald” part puts me off [name_m]Archibald[/name_m], sorry! [name_m]Archie[/name_m] is an adorable nickname though.
Ash is so sweet! I never thought of that as a nickname for [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]. I’ve always been a fan of [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] as a boy’s name, so this is really cool! I’ve just always loved [name_m]Archie[/name_m], though.
