[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries, I wouldn’t have expected to even consider same initials for twins but while I’m waiting to find out the sex(es) of my fraternal twins, boy girl combos sharing an initial just jump out at me. Would you do it? What do you think of these?
[name_m]Ivo[/name_m] and [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]
[name_m]Caspar[/name_m] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_f]Anais[/name_f]
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
I think if you have two names that you absolutely love, and they happen to have the same initial, then use them. However, if you deliberately pick names to have the same initial, but they are not names you adore, then I think it’s a little tacky.
I like the same initial on twins once the names aren’t similar sounding… like on the tv show 16 & Pregnant when one of the girls named their twins [name_u]Ali[/name_u] and [name_f]Aleah[/name_f] which I couldn’t stand… [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] is a very cute pairing. You could also consider using two names with the same meaning, for example, [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] both mean ‘gift of God.’
I used to like same initial names on twins but then I grew out of that and thought it was a little boring. Maybe alliteration names like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_u]Elias[/name_u].
I think it’s a little boring. The most important thing is to pick names that you love and that sound nice as a pair, because you will be saying them together a lot! With that said, I’ve always liked [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] as a brother-sister combination. It sounds so British to me.
Ideally, I prefer ALL siblings to have their own initial if possible. This is especially true in the case of twins or mulitples. These children are often thought of as a “pair” or “group” rather than the true unique individuals they are. It’s important that they be given their own identity and this begins at birth with the name the parents choose for them. I also worry about future children. If you name your twins with the same initial and have one more child with a different initial, the third child may feel left out - or singled out! If you must, I think it’s imperative that the names are different in sound and look. From your list, I would rate them as follows:
OK
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] (fave pairing)
[name_m]Caspar[/name_m] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_f]Anais[/name_f]
Too matchy…
[name_m]Ivo[/name_m] and [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_m]Even[/name_m] Better
[name_m]Ivo[/name_m] and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Anais[/name_f] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f]
I am not a big fan of siblings having the same initial - let alone twins. That said, if my two favorite names began with the same letter, then I would use them (unless they were too matchy like [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] and [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] or [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]). Each child deserves to have a name you love and I think the second name to fit the same letter comes across as second best. I would pair your names as follows
[name_m]Ivo[/name_m] and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_m]Casper[/name_m] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_f]Anais[/name_f]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]
I think you’re overreacting. Some children may feel singled out, but that’s just normal phase and it’s occurring even to children who are in no special way different by their siblings. Like, children often think they are left out and reasons may be totally silly.
I don’t mind the same initial twins, as long as the names don’t sound too similar; usually if the vowel sound is a bit different it’s okay. From your list I my favourite is [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]; even though they have the same first two letters, the rest is very different so they really fit together.
Wow, looks like a unanimous no to that idea, thanks for the honest feedback. It’s a weird new desire I have as I feel them move together to want to connect them in some way.
I’ve become a name geek since using the site to name [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] so names seem the way to do that! Going to have a rethink
I would try to avoid giving twins similar sounding names (including matching initials). I think it is something that is over and done with for at least awhile. Why not give them both names that you love?
I’d do it if I really loved the names. I wouldn’t want to “settle” on a name just because it matched initials. If I did end up giving twins the same first initial, I would make sure the middles are different.
I’d only use matching initials if I would have used them both, together, on a sibset of non-twins, and preferably they’d have different sounds.
Like G or C where you can pair names that don’t sound matchy, only read matchy. Your example of [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f] works in that regard; it’s not particularly confusing to call out.
It wouldn’t be my first prefer to have matching initials though - maybe reversed matching, like for example [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_f]Circe[/name_f].
I’m surprised by the negative reactions too. Personally, I think it’s a bit ridiculous to purposely pick two names with the same initials- it just limits your options and then you don’t necessarily get to use your favourite names. If your two favourite names happen to start with the same letter though, I don’t see a problem with it. As long as the names sound different and distinct, e.g. [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and [name_f]Verity[/name_f] are fine, [name_f]Catalina[/name_f] and [name_f]Caterina[/name_f] are not! It drives me crazy when the first initials are the same but the styles don’t work together at all, e.g. [name_f]Adeliza[/name_f] and [name_u]Addison[/name_u].
Yeah, I agree names are too important to pick one solely because of an initial but there are lots of names on my long list I love. I’d only do it if my twins are male and female, too confusing for practical reasons otherwise.
