I mentioned that I loved the name [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] to a friend who, when discussing a mutual friend, bemoaned the fact that everyone was using her favorite name, [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. She gave me the weirdest look and was all “Like [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] [name_m]Washington[/name_m]? No.” It really never occurred to me that someone would associate the name with that city. So, what is the first thing you think of when you hear the name [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]? Is it a positive or negative association?
The city. But I don’t think that’s bad, necessarily. It’s not like it’s [name_f]Vegas[/name_f].
Actually my first thought waas [name_f]Olympe[/name_f] [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], then the city. But not in a negative way
Greece, the Olympic Games
I always think of [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] Dukakis the actress.
I think of the Olympics… Good things, though
The opera character (from The Tales of Hoffmann) !
I think of Mount [name_m]Olympus[/name_m] in Greece and the olympics
Mount [name_m]Olympus[/name_m], Greek gods and myths. Ancient Greece, sand, philosophers and great thinkers. Basically loads of positive associations. I love [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] now, thanks to a bit of [name_u]Berry[/name_u] persuasion. Here’s the link to the thread if you want a look. Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums
Greece and the Olympics
Where do you live? [name_f]My[/name_f] immediate association was the Olympic games, but if I lived in the Northwest, I might have thought of the city first. It’s not necessarily weird to name your kid a name that is also a city…many names are also US cities ([name_m]Austin[/name_m], TX; [name_f]Helena[/name_f], MT; [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], NC; etc.). However, [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] is a more rare baby name, so it would probably be more like naming your kid [name_f]Atlanta[/name_f]. As someone who lives in the Southeast, I could not use [name_f]Atlanta[/name_f] as a baby name because the city association is too strong for me.
Dukakis. And moonstruck.
I thought of Mount [name_m]Olympus[/name_m] first, then of the Olympic games. I know about [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] the city, but I’m not from the US and I don’t hear about it often, so maybe that’s why it wasn’t my first thought. I honestly don’t think that the city is a bad association.
The Olympics and Mt. [name_m]Olympus[/name_m]
I think of the Olympic games, even Mt. [name_m]Olympus[/name_m] because my brother loves the [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] books. I think it’s a quite positive association, to be honest. I mean, the Olympic games are incredible, and Mountain names, I’ve found, are very pretty.
She lives in FL. I grew up there and barely knew [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] WA even existed. So, I never knew so many people associated it with the city! I’ve always thought of Mt [name_m]Olympus[/name_m] and the Olympics.
[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought is Greece, but I really like [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] as a name. I think it sounds strong & feminine at the same time.
I think of a lovely stong Greek female name. Then I think [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] Dukakis.
I think Dukakis
I think olympics and [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] Dukakis.
