As the title says! Be honest, I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste…
I’m thinking as a spunky middle name, rather than a first.
What other names does [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m] bring to mind?

I would have assumed it was a girl’s name because of the “elle” sound plus “wyn”. That said, I think it would work just fine in the middle spot as long as you used an unambiguous first name. E.g. [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m] [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m]. It almost sounds a bit English & surnamey in the middle spot which I kind of like.
[name_m]Elwyn[/name_m] made me think of these other names: [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u], [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], [name_m]Gavin[/name_m], [name_m]Alvin[/name_m], [name_m]Elton[/name_m]
[name_m]Elwyn[/name_m] reminds me of Delwyn [m]/Delwen [f], [name_f]Edlyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f].
I like it, but I’d prefer a girl [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. [name_u]Ellington[/name_u] is one of my favorite boy names though, so [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m] is not too far from that and I still like it. I think it’d be great in the middle name spot.
I like it! It sounds Celtic and romantic, it makes me think of wild Welsh landscapes (although I looked it up and apparently it’s English, it still sounds Welsh to me!). I also think it’s very lyrical, and just sounds beautiful.
Thanks for the comments!!
jackal I completely agree with your description!! It definitely sounds romantic and Welsh
Very feminine
Sorry, to me it sounds like an old man name but would be okay in the middle spot. To my ears it is similar to [name_m]Irwin[/name_m], [name_m]Irving[/name_m]…
I love it, a good old solid Welsh MALE name, so I’m delighted to see it under the boys name board.
It’s my great-uncle’s name, and he has got through life with his “feminine” name just fine.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] it as a “spunky” middle name.
Names it makes me think of are [name_u]Alwyn[/name_u] (which is the original form, [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m] is a derivative), Arwyn, Delwyn, [name_m]Derwyn[/name_m] and Elfyn. All strong Welsh male names.
I really like it - soft and romantic but with a backbone. For actual use today I do imagine that unfortunately it would be mistaken for a girl name, so I support your putting it in the middle name spot. It makes me think of an amalgam of Welsh names, and then the feminine “-wen” names ([name_f]Bronwen[/name_f], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]).
Can I see your source? Not trying to be confrontational, I would just be interested! I first assumed Welsh because of the ‘wyn’ ending, but Behind the Name says it’s a variant of [name_m]Alvin[/name_m], which is solidly Anglo-[name_m]Saxon[/name_m] and not Welsh at all. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have different information from a reliable source?
Thanks for the comments I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s opinions
I think it looks like effeminate and “uneek”
Really not a fan.
But to each their own.
As a middle name I think it’s fine. I wouldn’t use it as a first name, though. I honestly thought it was a girl’s name at first and it really reminds me of [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], which seems really popular over here.
My source is that it’s a name going back nine generations in my family tree, all Welsh, plus a book on Welsh names.
Some names can have more than one origin, believe it or not.
Sounds a bit nerdy to me, like a feminine version of [name_m]Eldon[/name_m] or [name_m]Elroy[/name_m].
I like it as a boy’s name… Not for a girl though–just because I am not a fan of girls having boy names.
