What do we think of the name Gemma?

I really like it but my husband does not, although it seems he would grow into it if I kept at it. Who do you imagine when you think of a girl named [name]Gemma[/name]? I think posh but a little quirkly and bohemian but maybe I’m way off. And does th name [name]Gemma[/name] automatically mean nickname [name]Gem[/name]? Thanks!

I know a little baby [name]Gemma[/name] and she is exactly as you described. It’s a super cute name!

I love [name]Gemma[/name]! It’s super cute.

I personally don’t like [name]Gemma[/name], but that might just be because one of my favorites is [name]Genevieve[/name], with nickname [name]Genna[/name]. I think that is so much nicer than [name]Gemma[/name].

[name]Genevieve[/name] is nice, I just know my husband would never go for it : ) You could use [name]Vivi[/name] as nn for [name]Genevieve[/name]. I love [name]EMMA[/name] too but it’s just so darn popular. For great reason but it’s too much.

[name]Gemma[/name] is lovely! I fell in love with the name after I read A Great and Terrible Beauty and its sequels. I think it’s a very elegant yet modern name, which can be hard to find!

It’s okay. Not one I really love or hate either way.
It’s pretty.

[name]Gemma[/name] is one of my favorites. I love the name because it is very old and biblical, but it sounds so trendy and today. She may get the nn [name]Gem[/name] by classmates, but it will be up to you to keep it [name]Gemma[/name] if you want it that way. It’s do-able
I [name]LOVE[/name], [name]LOVE[/name], [name]LOVE[/name] it!!!

I really like it. Lots of potential. Underused in [name]Canada[/name] and the US.

Wait? Did I write this? EXACT situation I am in. Love the name, husband says it sounds made up. Whatever that means. Strategizing how to get him on board. Had not considered nn “Gem” but did think about people thinking of old cartoon Jem and the Rockers, or whatever it was called. Random I know.

Anyway, I love it. Love LOVE it and cannot stop thinking about it. But am a little nervous that its going to start to get too popular. Like previously said, its a little posh, a little bohemian, a little classic and a little hip.

[name]Jem[/name] and the Holograms is the 80’s cartoon you’re referring too, and as it happens it was my favorite as a child! That’s not why we’re using [name]Gemma[/name], but it is a funny coincidence.

I had several other name loves this time around that I would’ve been thrilled to use, but [name]Gemma[/name] [name]Hermione[/name] just feels like it’s hers. I have a backup option of course, but I highly doubt I’ll need it.

[name]Hi[/name] like [name]Gemma[/name], but prefer [name]Jenna[/name]. But then I would prefer the nickname [name]Gem[/name] over [name]Jen[/name] or [name]Jenny[/name]…

I love [name]Gemma[/name] so much, I really want to use it but DH doesn’t like it because he had a friend called [name]Gemma[/name] who he fell out with over something stupid and he hates her now. It makes me sad but we probably couldn’t use it anyway because my DH’s niece is called [name]Jenna[/name] and she’s at our house often so it would get really confusing!

Honestly, I find it very dated. It’s been pretty popular here for so many years, and the only Gemmas I know are 30+.

I like [name]Gemma[/name]. It sounds really cute and its a nice alternative to popular [name]Emma[/name].

I picture a posh english girl that likes to have tea parties.

Ha! YES! [name]Jem[/name] and the holograms! At least it’s spelled “[name]Jem[/name]” and “[name]Gem[/name]” so its not as obvious a connection. I mean, I liked it too, but wouldn’t want that connection. [name]Gemma[/name] [name]Hermione[/name] is great. I’ve GOT to get my husband on board with this name!

Are you in [name]England[/name] or US? I havent heard it much in the US but I think it could be gaining popularity. I just hope I get to use it before it is too popular here (in US). Part of the appeal for me is that it is “English -sounding.” Too me anyway.

To me it is very dated it is till top 100 in Australia but it was popular in the 80’s

When I hear this name I think of when we lived in [name]Ireland[/name], [name]Gemma[/name] is a much more popular name there! [name]Every[/name] [name]Gemma[/name] I knew seemed to be very cute and outgoing. I like the name a lot!

I love it! I don’t think it automatically assumes [name]Gem[/name] as a nickname.
