I’m loving the name [name]Desmond[/name] more and more. I want to start trying to conceive as soon as I finish school, in about two semesters, so I may actually end up using it if I have a boy. I need to know real opinions about useability both in the U.S. and abroad. [name]Will[/name] non name nerds find it too odd? I myself used to think [name]Desmond[/name] sounded a little off, partly because I’ve never met a [name]Desmond[/name].
Would I be doing my child a disservice in naming him [name]Desmond[/name]? What kind of person do you imagine could pull of the name [name]Desmond[/name]?
Also I have read on urban dictionary that [name]Desmond[/name] is used as an insult slang word in Australia. Is this used else where in the world? [name]How[/name] about in the U.K., which is home to many highly creative (and hilarious) insults? Does this have any bases in reality? It would NOT automatically discount the name for me, considering that I live in the U.S., but I love to travel and would like to minimize teasing potential for him if at all possible. I feel like I should be aware of all aspects and many opinions of this name before I actually use it.
[name]Desmond[/name] is my top name for boys. I think it sounds very handsome and I love the nickname [name]Des[/name]. With the option of the full name and the nickname, I think any type could carry it. [name]Desmond[/name] itself does sound a little highbrow, I have to admit. But I love it!
I have not heard of any associations like the ones you mentioned (I am in the U.S. too) But I would be interested to hear other responses because I am considering it too.
I’m an Aussie and just did a quick Google search to see if I could find what [name]Desmond[/name] is slang for. All I could find was the use of ‘[name]Desi[/name]’ to mean a fool. So, I guess in part that answers your question; it cannot be in too frequent use in [name]Oz[/name] if I did not even know what it meant. I certainly have never come across anyone using [name]Desmond[/name] or [name]Desi[/name] in a derogatory way.
I personally am quite a fan of the name [name]Desmond[/name] and have it on my long list. I feel it’s similarity to [name]Edmond[/name] adds to its usability and I see [name]Desmond[/name] as someone intelligent with a bit of spunk. Being a Beatles fan, I also like the connection to the song Ob La [name]Di[/name].
[name]LOVE[/name] IT!! I’m in Australia too and I have never heard of [name]Desi[/name] being slang for anything, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I think of [name]Desmond[/name] [name]Jones[/name] from the Beatles “Obla-di, Obla-da.”
I think of [name]Desmond[/name] from the TV show “Lost,” but that’s not necessarily bad. I like it, actually. I agree that the nickname [name]Des[/name] would be cute. I don’t think it’s odd at all, just not super common.
[name]Prior[/name] to watching “Lost” I was kind of meh on this name, but now I really like it. [name]Desmond[/name] its such a great character and his love for and relationship with [name]Penny[/name] was one of my favorite parts of the show! Also, the only man I’ve ever actually met named [name]Desmond[/name] was a very handsome waiter when I was on vacation in [name]London[/name]. [name]Love[/name] this name!
[name]Love[/name] it! It’s my 7-week old son’s name, and although most people say they’ve never met a [name]Desmond[/name] here (I’m in NYC and the name’s only in the high-300’s nationally), they go out of their way to say how much they like it. Others comment that it sounds so “British and regal.” And you’re right: the nicknames [name]Des[/name] and [name]Desi[/name] are awesome. It’s a name that will grow with him: “[name]Desi[/name]” as an adorable baby, “[name]Des[/name]” as a teen and young adult, and “[name]Desmond[/name]” as a man.
My boyfriend loves the name [name]Desmond[/name]. He’s a big time Michigan fan and [name]Desmond[/name] [name]Morgan[/name] is their quarterback, plus he lives up to the manly man image that I get from [name]Desmond[/name]. Overall, I think it’s a great name and agree with the others how it has the nicknames/potential to grow.
I’m also from Australia and have never heard of it in a bad way. It does remind me of the Beatles song ‘Obla [name]Di[/name] Obla Da’.
That song does reference [name]Desmond[/name] as being a cross dresser
“[name]Happy[/name] ever after in the market place…
[name]Molly[/name] lets the children lend a hand…
[name]Desmond[/name] stays at home and does his pretty face…
And in the evening she’s a singer with the band…”
But I don’t think that matters at all. I’ve never met a [name]Desmond[/name] but know of a [name]Des[/name] whose about 70 years old.
I imagine a bookish person. But if there are not many other [name]Desmond[/name]'s around - your son will make the name his own. Good luck!
I’m in Australia, and have never heard [name]Desmond[/name] (or any variation) used as an insult. I wouldn’t worry about that.
However, being brutally honest, I think [name]Desmond[/name] is kind of geeky-in-a-bad-way. [name]Desmond[/name] is the middle-aged guy from accounting with bad skin and crooked glasses who eats lunch with [name]Nigel[/name] and [name]Winston[/name] every day.
Another Australian here who before your post hadn’t heard of [name]Desmond[/name] ([name]Desi[/name]) being used as an insult.
I sort of like it but it feels too heavy/clunky for me, plus it reminds of the annoying protagonist in the Assasin’s [name]Creed[/name] games and the evil warlock from the [name]Casper[/name] & [name]Wendy[/name] movie. It just leaves me a little cold.
