What do you think of Cain?

Well, i am having a hard time finding a name for a baby boy. My hubby wants our future son’s name to be [name]Cain[/name]. I am hesitant because based from what i read, it doesn’t good. What do you think? Should i add another name? Help please. :frowning:

I like it, and yes the story behind it is terrible…But if you both love it go for it, a meaning means nothing because in the end it is your child that will shape their personality and I don’t think the meaning will dictate who they are if that makes any sense.

Though I do prefer the spelling [name]Kane[/name].

I like the sound, but I agree, the story is very tragic. I agree with @sunshine kid, though–I love the spelling [name]Kane[/name], and I think it gets rid of the [name]Cain[/name] and [name]Abel[/name] associations, at least on paper.

Good luck!

I actually can’t stand the [name]Kane[/name] spelling. :frowning: It’s a very trendy, bratty type of name around here. Same goes for [name]Zane[/name].

[name]Cain[/name] looks exponentially nicer, but I still wouldn’t use it because of the bible story.

I really hate the name [name]Cain[/name] because of the bible story and because of [name]Candy[/name] canes/old people canes/cane sugar. It’s an outdated name and shouldn’t be used. [name]Kane[/name] could eliminate those associations, but people will spell it [name]Cain[/name] when they hear it.

[name]Cain[/name] is one of those names that just shouldn’t be used.

I really don’t think [name]Cain[/name] is usable. More specifically, I don’t think [name]Cain[/name] should be used.

If you love the sound but want to avoid burdening your son with such a negative association, I’d opt for [name]Kane[/name] or [name]Caine[/name] instead.

[name]Caine[/name] looks somewhat better to me. It’s not my favorite at all, but i guess i can see the appeal on aesthetic grounds.

I really like the name, but I also prefer the spelling [name]Kane[/name]. I also prefer [name]Kane[/name] for a girl.

I wouldn’t use it, I think it’s just not worth it imo.

I’d rather, [name]Cade[/name], [name]Cale[/name], [name]Zane[/name] before [name]Cain[/name].

[name]Cane[/name] or [name]Kane[/name] is much better, but still, not worth it imo.

[name]Don[/name]'t listen to these people saying it is unusable. The [name]Cain[/name] and [name]Abel[/name] association should not ruin this name for you, especially if you really like it.

I’ve met a few Cains before and have nothing but good things to say about them and their names. Like the first poster said, it’s the child that shapes his name, not a story out of the bible.

There are so many other good names out there, I’m not sure why you’d want to use a name that has such negative associations for so many people. Why burden a child with that?

I don’t see the problem. I would definitely use it if you want to. Please don’t let a story or people who can’t see past it steer you away from such a great name.

I would spell it [name]Kane[/name]. It’s completely different from [name]Cain[/name] in meaning, and it just looks nicer, imo (and I usually don’t like K names). [name]Cain[/name] has the heavy biblical associations, but [name]Kane[/name] is doable.

[name]Cain[/name] was still loved by God. For that reason alone I think the name is usable. I do not like the spelling [name]Kane[/name] at all. The name is shaped by the child, not the other way around. The name however should be a name both you and your husband love, not just your husband.

This kind of response baffles me. I think it’s a bit rude, actually. Why is these people’s opinion any less valid than anyone else’s?

If the only thing that matters to you is how much you love your child’s name, why ask on a forum?

Names have history and connections. Posters on here want to know what associations other people have with a name. They can then take that into consideration or discount it.

[name]Don[/name]'t use [name]Cain[/name]! It would be a horror name in my book.

Well, “[name]Cain[/name]” is actually an anglicized version of an actual Hebrew name Qayin, which was written in Koine as Ka-in, hence [name]Cain[/name].

It’s also a Gaelic name and means “beautiful” in Welsh. It’s a fairly common surname as well. Also, the hero of Blizzard’s [name]Diablo[/name] games is Deckard [name]Cain[/name], making it pop-culture friendly.

I [name]DON[/name]'T think this name has the same connotation as something like [name]Jezebel[/name] or [name]Adolph[/name]; it’s more like [name]Delilah[/name] or Anakin.

I second that. I really like [name]Judas[/name], but wouldn’t use is because of the bad association. Well in my country both names aren’t even allowed because you would harm your child with them. [name]Kane[/name] could work though!

I don’t mind [name]Cain[/name] at all - have known a couple here in [name]Oz[/name]…didn’t really raise any eyebrows that i was aware of. I think lots of people might think “[name]Cain[/name] and [name]Abel[/name]” but mant wouldn’t actually be able to come up with the story/meaning. I guess for me, considering [name]Cain[/name] is more about whether you want a noun name (even if the spelling is not cane).
