What do you think of Dean?

I started watching Supernatural recently, and [name]Jensen[/name] Ackles has made me consider the name [name]Dean[/name] in a whole new light. I realize [name]Dean[/name] won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but in general what do you think of the name? [name]How[/name] do you think it would wear on a guy who doesn’t slay monsters? I’m sort of just wanting to get a feel for how [name]Dean[/name] is perceived, because it’s a name I never see brought up on Nameberry. I’m in the US, if that sways opinions.

Thanks!

Also wanted to add: [name]Dean[/name] is currently #284 in the US, with 1230 births in 2011. Anyone else surprised that it ranks that high?

I’m not surprised at all. [name]Dean[/name] seems very current and sturdy, always under the radar but very cool. I always loved it because of [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls, but then I met a [name]Dean[/name] who sort of made it not-so-appealing, but I still find it very sturdy and timeless and down-to-earth. I would love meeting a cute little [name]Dean[/name].

I think [name]Dean[/name] is a great name, it has a very cool vibe, especially with the [name]James[/name] [name]Dean[/name] connection

All of the connections for [name]Dean[/name] are pretty awesome, in my opinion. Like people said- [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls, [name]James[/name] [name]Dean[/name], Supernatural. It’s very masculine and sturdy, like ash said above. I’m a bit partial to it because of [name]Jensen[/name] Ackles’ character, but even without that, I think it’s a handsome, solid name.

I agree with you; I am surprised it ranks that high! If I heard the name, I would assume an older man initially, but I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Dean[/name] on a baby! It is very charming, timeless, and recognizable. I think others may be beginning to think that it’s time for a comeback for [name]Dean[/name], too (possibly why it is #284, I mean)

I was very surprised when a relative named his son [name]Dean[/name] a few years ago; I hadn’t realized it was back in style. [name]Little[/name] [name]Dean[/name] is now about three years old and the name suits him. It’s cute!

I think it’s a strong, solid, relaxed name. It has the cool vibe going on with Supernatural and [name]James[/name] [name]Dean[/name] as strong cultural associations. I honestly can’t think of a single negative thing to say about it.

I love [name]Dean[/name]! Also because of Supernatural, haha.

I also have a cousin named [name]Dean[/name], who’s a total comedian so I have positive connotations to it. I think it works well on many people types.

I’m not that surprised that it ranks that high because I think a lot of people, including myself, consider [name]Dean[/name] a classic. I can see a [name]Dean[/name] who doesn’t slay monsters walking around in real life
Good choice!

Handsome.

I think of [name]Jack[/name] [name]Kerouac[/name]'s character in On The Road who is a thinly veiled [name]Neal[/name] [name]Cassady[/name], so I picture a rambling traveler beatnik type & I also picture [name]James[/name] [name]Dean[/name].

I’ve never seen the show you mentioned.

All in all, it’s masculine & handsome

I like [name]Dean[/name], but don’t love it. It is one of those nice names that always stays under the radar.

It always surprised me how low on the list [name]Dean[/name] is! For some reason, I expected it to be way higher, but when I think about it, I’ve only every known one [name]Dean[/name] (who was awesome). It feels like such a normal name and yet you still hardly ever hear it. It’s just under the radar but totally normal, which I love about it. And it’s got such a cool vibe. I have no bad associations with this name, like everyone else has mentioned. It’s in my list for sures.

I think of my dad and stepdad who’s middle names are both [name]Dean[/name]…we also have a neighbor in his 50s named [name]Dean[/name]. I’ve never been very fond of the name but can def see it working with the rest of the short names that are in style at the moment. I think it’s a little before its time at the moment.

I really like it. There’s a baby [name]Dean[/name] in my moms (and babies) group and I think it works well. I think it has a laid-back, cool vibe to it without appearing to try too hard.

I think [name]Dean[/name] is a fabulous name!!

[name]Dean[/name] isn’t on my list of favorites, but as everyone has said, it’s an under-the-radar name that’s familiar yet cool. The meaning, “church official,” could also give it a somewhat rarefied, scholarly British feel, if you chose to think about it that way–as in “[name]Dean[/name] of the cathedral.” I’ve seen it on Nameberry a few times; it was included on a fairly recent “Surfer Boy Names” post, some celebrity (I don’t remember who) recently named a son [name]Dean[/name], and I know it’s user dillonsfan’s number one boy choice. I also think farminmomma, who had twins [name]Boone[/name] and [name]Delaney[/name] last year, has an older son named [name]Dean[/name].

My two immediate associations are very different: [name]Dean[/name] [name]Priest[/name], a character from L.M. [name]Montgomery[/name]'s “[name]Emily[/name] of [name]New[/name] [name]Moon[/name]” series–he’s one of those middle-aged, odd yet charismatic characters she occasionally writes; and [name]Dean[/name] [name]Jones[/name], actor of “[name]Herbie[/name] the [name]Love[/name] Bug” fame.

Best wishes!

Lol. I just marathoned through like the first five seasons in [name]December[/name]. (Instead of studying for my semester finals).
The show made me reconsider both [name]Dean[/name] and [name]Samuel[/name]. [name]Both[/name] of which I always liked but didn’t love.
I think [name]Dean[/name] has this great bad boy handsomeness too it but also evokes the swooney gooey emotional center that I love about the name. (I feel similarly about [name]Samuel[/name]/[name]Sammy[/name] but add some [name]Solomon[/name]/Biblical wisdom).

This. It seems sturdy and down to earth to me, and it reminds me of [name]Dean[/name] from [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls (though he always sort of irritated me as a character). I like it as a middle, or as a first for a family who likes simple, straightforward names that are a tad less common.

I didn’t expect [name]Dean[/name] to get such positive feedback! I guess I was expecting to hear that it’s too dated.

[name]James[/name] [name]Dean[/name] is a good one. Any more thoughts?

I love [name]Dean[/name]. I think it has a very midwest, all-american, slightly rebellious feel. A little 50s because of [name]James[/name] [name]Dean[/name], but also still current. I think it’s handsome. Really love it.
