I’m British so old-fashioned names like this are fairly common and on the rise so I’m not too worried about it not being ready to make a comeback so I’m just looking for general opinions.
I like that it’s British (specifically Welsh), uncommon and means ‘life, spirit’. It also has a great namesake in [name_f]Enid[/name_f] Blyton who was one of my favourite authors as a child.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think the nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f] would work or is it too much of a stretch? I’d also appreciate other nickname options and middle names if you can think of any.
If [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Edie[/name_f] are finding new converts, I don’t see why [name_f]Enid[/name_f] can’t do the same. I think it’s an underused Welsh beauty. I guess [name_f]Edie[/name_f] would be ok or maybe Iddy, Niddy or even [name_f]Ena[/name_f].
I really like this name and it was on my list at one point. I’m in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and a band has a song called ‘[name_f]Enid[/name_f]’ (we never really knew each other anyways) so that’s what I think of first. My hesitation with it is silly, it’s that it’s backwards for [name_f]Dine[/name_f]. Once I knew that, I couldn’t unknow it.
[name_f]Edie[/name_f] is a stretch, but not out of the question. I’d just think choosing a relatively uncommon name like [name_f]Enid[/name_f], you wouldn’t go for one of the more popular names in the UK as a nickname? Especially as [name_f]Keira[/name_f] Knightley just chose it for her daughter. I’d probably just call her ‘E’.
i love enid, The meaning is so beautiful as well! As for a nickname, maybe something like Nini/[name_f]Nina[/name_f]? Although that’s reaaally a stretch… if you give her a J-middle name like [name_f]Enid[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Enid[/name_f] [name_f]Julia[/name_f] etc you could call her EJ but to be honest I think that’s kind of tacky… but still an idea [name_f]Adore[/name_f] [name_f]Enid[/name_f] [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] from your signature by the way, the names are so unexpected together but work beautifully in a combo.
I really like [name_f]Enid[/name_f] because of the meaning and the link to [name_f]Enid[/name_f] Blyton. It’s another awesome vintage name I think is ready for a revival. I think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is a bit of a stretch, but still usable, although I really don’t think [name_f]Enid[/name_f] needs a nickname. But if I did use one, I’d probably go for Niddy, or maybe Enie (Ee-nee).
This isn’t rational since I like other vintage names like [name_f]Edna[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f], but I’m not a fan of [name_f]Enid[/name_f]. It sounds pinched to me and reminds me of “aphid.”
enid for me (and for people like me) will always be the girls from ghost world. that’s a good association btw, at least in my opinion. edie could work as a nickname, but enid is already similar to edith so i would avoid it?
Thank you! This is a much better response than I was expecting. I’m defnitely a nickname person so I may just have to squeeze [name_f]Edie[/name_f] out of [name_f]Enid[/name_f] as I don’t particualrly like the sound of Enie or Niddy, although I do like [name_u]Ede[/name_u] as well, perhaps that’s a better option for [name_f]Enid[/name_f].
@jonix I have no idea what Ghost World is but I’m glad it’s a good association!
I think [name_f]Enid[/name_f] is a simply wonderful name, but I actually have to admit that I love it so much that I feel like discouraging you from using it; no one must use it but me!
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t take me seriously, of course; I’m only joking.
I personally would find [name_f]Edie[/name_f] a bit of a stretch for [name_f]Enid[/name_f], but if it comes naturally for you, then you shouldn’t have any hesitation for nickname an [name_f]Enid[/name_f] [name_f]Edie[/name_f] if you want to.
I adore and cherish [name_f]Enid[/name_f]! [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Edie[/name_f] as a nickname. I also like [name_f]Evadne[/name_f] with [name_f]Enid[/name_f] as a nickname (hey, moms can pick whatever nn’s they want!)
I love it, primarily because of the Arthurian connection {the most beautiful, graceful woman? Nice}. And while I prefer the eh-nid pronunciation, I like how you can get [name_f]Edie[/name_f] out of the other.
