What do you think of Ermengarde?

I first heard of this name when I was a little girl, probably about 6 or 7. It was a character in A [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_f]Princess[/name_f], which was one of my favorite books growing up. I still love it so much. Ermengarde was one of the first names I fell in love with, and yet I never see anybody talking about it. It means universal or complete. Isn’t that such a cool meaning? When I hear Ermengarde, I imagine a young woman who is strong willed, but also kind and gentle. I’m picturing someone who loves to read and go on adventures. Sure, it’s a little bit long and clunky, but Ermengarde has so much charm! In my opinion, it’s old fashioned in a good way. I would probably use it as a middle name, but a little Ermengarde could also go by [name_f]Emmy[/name_f].

I brought this up to my significant other once and he said it sounded too much like “ermagerd”. And I think… that’s the most upsetting thing anyone’s ever said to me. :joy: I wish he hadn’t mentioned it but I still love the name.

What do you think of Ermengarde? What would you pair with it as a first or middle name? I would love to see some combo ideas.

I would use it as a middle, personally.

I love Ermengarde! It’s going on my GP list, but I think that it could be totally usable.

At first, I thought it was like the ermagerd meme, just because the spelling is quite similar. That threw me off at first, but not everyone would recognize the similarity. I think it could make a cool middle.

Posting the photo for reference

I really like it and pretty much all names from A [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_f]Princess[/name_f]. I would probably use it as a middle but I’d love to meet an Ermengarde. [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is a sweet nickname!

I love Ermengarde! Though I’ll admit now that I see the connection to the meme it’s hard to unsee it, but I think it definitely works for a middle. And could work as a first if’s you’re brave enough

I like the idea of using it as a middle! I think it would pair best with an approachable first name. What about [name_f]Alice[/name_f] Ermengarde?

I have it on my list. Really like it! It has a regal and sophisticated feel

I think its kind of an attempt to make peculiar something that’s kinda basic. Like my [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] isn’t a mere [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], it’s secretly ostentatious obscure moniker. Also the meme association is kinda unavoidable. It works for a book character, but not for a living person in an [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking country. It would be insufferable for a kid who isn’t [name_m]German[/name_m].

I thought of the meme as well, but it’s not used as much if at all now so doubt it’d be an issue. Saying that, Ermengarde is so hard to wear that I’d keep it as a middle, if that. It’s NMS and I’d imagine a name someone would struggle to live with.

I also thought of the Ermahgerd meme, but I think that is a bit outdated at this point. I also thought of the character in Hello [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] who is described as “a dramatic, whiny, high-strung crybaby” which isn’t the best description. Overall though I think the nickname [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] does make it more accessible but I think in the middle would be a safer bet

I would not want to have this name! Maybe as a pet name for [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] it would be sweet and endearing but not as a legal name. Its just too much to deal with your whole life.

I’m not the hugest fan but it’s okay. I’d probably use it as a middle with a lighter first

I’m not a fan of the sound of Ermengarde and depending on where you live, I think it could be hard to wear. I would recommend it as a middle name for a more contemporary-sounding first name. [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is a cute nickname but I think (where I live at least) kids are more likely to shorten Ermengarde to Ermie than [name_f]Emmy[/name_f].

Lily Ermengarde
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] Ermengarde
[name_f]Layla[/name_f] Ermengarde
[name_f]Leah[/name_f] Ermengarde

That meme was my first thought, even before I read about your partner.
However!
Viral memes come and go. Maybe by the time Ermengarde is in school, the only people who will remember it will be adults who are mature enough to not say anything about it. It’s possible.
I also think using it as a middle spot is an option.

I didnt make the connection to the meme and I wouldn’t even remember if people had t brought it up; I think it’s an unusual name which makes it somewhat special… I love how she can go by [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], maybe even [name_f]Megan[/name_f]
I think it works as a first or middle
[name_f]Thea[/name_f] Ermengarde (as it was mentioned before, sounds perfect)
[name_u]Or[/name_u]
Ermengarde [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
