Thoughts on the name? And does anyone know meaning of?
I love Escher, it is in my top 100. It makes me think of the artist who’s work I love. Escher is a surname that means someone who lives in any place called Esche, which is the german word for ash, so basically it means ‘dweller near an ash tree’
mclola already covered it. I’m sure the name has a long and storied history, but in my mind its only meaning is in reference to MC Escher.
First time i hear that name !! To be honest i find it very interesting and i love the - er end .
I think of stairs.
I love the name! I love MC Escher, I love the meaning, and I think it can sound great with a lot of surnames - unfortunately, not mine.
i really like Escher, it’s on my own list
i only think of the artist when i hear it. i’m [name_m]German[/name_m], the above translation “dweller near an ash tree” fits, but it’s not what comes to mind when i think of the name. to me, it’s more of a cerebral connotation… since Escher’s paintings are about reality and our perception of it. on my list, it’s right next to [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] and some names of philosophers.
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce it?
It’s a nice alternative to [name_m]Asher[/name_m], which seems to be gaining popularity, on nb at least. I like the artist association. Better raise him to have depth!
I think it’s ‘ESH-er’.
I think if heard aloud it could easily be mistaken for it’s near-twin, [name_m]Asher[/name_m]. It makes me think of the artist, more specifically the famous poster with the staircases.
No offense but it reminds me of eschar which is dead tissue. I doubt anyone would think this though unless they have a medical background.
I’m really digging Esher just lately (without the C) after finding it in the poem “Beowulf.” I think Esher was Anglo-[name_m]Saxon[/name_m]. The poem is ancient, so the name must be, too, but I haven’t done any more research on it yet. I wonder whether Esher and Escher are forms of the same name or whether they’re homonyms…anyway, I like Escher too, especially since I like M.C. Escher’s work.
[name_f]One[/name_f] downside that has occurred to me is that the written name could easily be mistaken for [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. Others have already mentioned that the spoken name could be mistaken for [name_m]Asher[/name_m].
Best wishes!
My thought is that it sounds too close to [name_f]Esther[/name_f]…
MC Escher is one of my favorite artists, so I like it
