What do you think of Iris?

Honestly, if you asked me few years ago I’d probably say it’s an old lady name and I’d never use it…but I’m seriously starting to consider it for a girl due in January. I’m thinking Iris Elisabeth…

It’s of Greek origin, and with its connection to rainbows and mythology, flower, and colorful part of the eye, the meanings have grown on me. I like classic, simple and meaningful names.

Back story: My 4 year old wanted to name what will be her only little sister “Rainbow Heart Ice Cream” :joy: so that led me to telling her about Iris and how it means rainbow, and she got so hooked on it and insists we use it that I’m starting to like it, too.

What would you think if introduced to a baby Iris? I posted previously about how I was considering Chloe originally. My 4 year old daughter is Claire Kate.

Thanks!

I really like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]. It sounds very classic but I haven’t met any little Irises so also refreshing conpared to other old fashioned names that are back in style. The meaning is really special and the fact that tour daughter had some input, i think its really perfect. [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is a pretty middle with it and ageless.

I think at one point I had [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Viveca[/name_f] (or was it [name_f]Viveca[/name_f] Iris?) on my list. Its probably not a name I’d really use but it has lovely imagery as a pretty flower with the cool rainbow meaning!

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is my daughter’s name and I love it! I’ve met a couple Irises since I had my daughter, so it’s not unusual.

I really like the name [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. It’s tailored, lovely to say, symbolic, and will age well (parents often name for the baby/toddler years).

I know a young [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and when I first met her, her name came across as smart, pretty and artsy to me! I had anyway considered it for my daughter but her last name is fussy (like Theroux) and it didn’t work. But I still really like it, and think it would make a fab pairing with [name_f]Claire[/name_f] - better than [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] (because of the different initial and because [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is closer to [name_f]Claire[/name_f] in terms of unfrilly beauty).

I love that you’re going for the S [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]! I just recommended [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] before coming on here. Actually that’s my small criticism: the S in [name_f]Iris[/name_f] drags a little into the S in [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]. Not enough not to use it and it might be fine once last name in play but maybe try (in that middle spot) [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f]! I love both the floral & [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f] connections, and it does have an old fashioned feel but I also think on the flip side it has a very sleek, modern and strong sound.

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is miiiiiles above [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], IMO.

Thanks! I love to hear that it “goes with” [name_f]Claire[/name_f] because that’s def important to me. I still love [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] but started to worry they were too similar, and I do agree [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] “match” stylistically.

[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_u]Lisa[/name_u], so that’s why I’m partial to [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (though I love both). [name_m]Just[/name_m] figured the ‘s’ makes it closer to my derivative. I actually like the repeating S’s as well…last name is [name_u]French[/name_u] and ends with a silent ‘s’ so makes a nice pattern when written

Those reasons you mention (e.g., sleek) are exactly what I loved about [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. Thank you

That makes sense! Keep it then - it’s a stunning name and I’m all for an honour in that second spot. :raised_hands:t2::ribbon: (Also, I like [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] too, just think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is a better match for a few reasons, including that it’s got staying power.)

It’s my daughter’s name so of course I love it, and all its meanings have a special meaning to me which makes it even more perfect. [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] was also a top pick for a second girl! I love that it’s also her sister’s input.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] has a very nice flow to it.

I LOVE Iris! It’s beautiful & sounds lovely with Claire :tulip: I think your daughter has great taste by the way (Rainbow Heart Ice Cream is pretty fab :purple_heart:)

I also love [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the meaning, the flower too… it was on my longer lists of 15-20 names when I was pregnant with my daughter, along with [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f].

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is a gorgeous combo.

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is short and sweet and fits with current trends like [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_u]Ivy[/name_u].

I adore [name_f]Iris[/name_f]! It’s quite popular in my country (UK) so I know a few tiny ones and I think it’s absolutely gorgeous on all of them. I also love it with Claire; it would be so sweet if her big sister were involved in choosing her name!

I have come to really love [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I used to not like how it sounds (for example in the movie The [name_f]Holiday[/name_f] 2006), I felt it had a dated feel. However, now I feel it’s tailored and elegant and somehow very magical. :sparkles: [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is gorgeous!

I absolutely love [name_f]Iris[/name_f]!

She was a major front runner for me (it was [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] as I couldn’t use [name_u]Rose[/name_u] at the time) but decided to follow my cultural traditions by using [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]. Funnily enough if my daughter had been [name_f]Iris[/name_f] she’d have been [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] so clearly I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]. Anyways clearly I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] she’s still a favourite of mine she’s sweet, bright, has a nostalgic vintage flair and I love the floral/rainbow connections. For me the name evokes pretty spring imagery baby lambs being born, meadows, wildflowers and the whole Easter/Passover period. I like the idea of [name_f]Claire[/name_f] & [name_f]Iris[/name_f] as a pairing very elegant.

I absolutely love [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I think that it’s beautiful, elegant, and perhaps just a little spunky. I also love the meaning of the name and the backstory from your other daughter.

While I really, really, REALLY, love the name [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] (and Elizabeth), I think that since your other daughter’s middle name is [name_f]Kate[/name_f], she should also have a one syllable middle name. Some ways around [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] could be things like [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Beth[/name_f].

Some other middle name ideas:

[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Rae[/name_u], [name_u]Ray[/name_u]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_u]Lynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Lou[/name_u]

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is very underused and underappreciated, I think. [name_f]Flower[/name_f] names are so popular, but [name_f]Iris[/name_f] remains rare despite it’s elegance and charm. The meaning is darling, with sort of a vintage springtime feel. I think some people might associate it with eyes (as in your [name_f]Iris[/name_f] or pupil) but for me that connotation doesn’t really come to mind.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f] are sunny and sweet together!!

I like your interpretation of [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] as sunny :sun_with_face:  and agree about the eye meaning and that being the turn off for some (even though that’s not even the worst connotation in the world)…but I think the other meanings (flower, rainbow) outweigh that. Thanks!
