We have come across the name [name_u]Micah[/name_u] and are starting to really like it for our boy due in a few weeks… It is quite uncommon in my area in Australia. We are not religious at all, but don’t really care about the biblical reference as we quite like lots of Hebrew names!
What are your thoughts on the name? I’ve mentioned it to one friend and she had never heard of it…will it be mispronounced as Meekah constantly instead of [name_f]Mykah[/name_f]??
I’ve never heard anyone say it mee-kah, but I’m in the US. I like [name_u]Micah[/name_u] though. It has always seemed like a fresher version of [name_u]Michael[/name_u] to me
I like [name_u]Micah[/name_u] too. I’ve never heard anyone say “meekah” but then I’ve never met anyone with this name. The good thing is that it sounds like the first part of [name_u]Michael[/name_u], a very well known name, so once people have heard it/been corrected once I’m sure they’ll remember it. It’s likely to be slightly better known in the future too as its popularity is on the up.
I think [name_u]Micah[/name_u]'s a great name - gentle, yet strong. I do think that it might get a few mispronunciations here and there (with the long E sound, rather than the long I) however, I’m a big believer in ‘a quick correction and all will be well’.
I liked it until I met an actual [name_u]Micah[/name_u] who was a not-all-that-great person, to put it nicely. But the base of liking it is there. It has an interesting sound – most boy names, even the softer ones that I would categorize with [name_u]Micah[/name_u], don’t have quite the sharpness of it (with the ‘eye’ dipthong and hard K sound).
Mispronunciation really isn’t as big a deal as people make it out to be – I have a less-common but still well-known name ([name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]) and people get it wrong ALL the time (I get [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] a lot, for some reason). You just correct them and move on.
Thanks very much for all your comments everyone! The paranoia of mispronounciation has been squashed & I will hopefully make a decision with my husband very soon!
I love [name_u]Micah[/name_u]. It is very sweet, but charming in its own way. I don’t think that there should be any issues with pronunciation - it’s no different to [name_u]Michael[/name_u], and everyone knows how to say that.
Hey! I’m also from Australia. There are a few [name_u]Micah[/name_u]'s in Stdney these days. The boy is always pronounced [name_u]Micah[/name_u] (My-ca) and a girl is generally a different spelling and is pronounced (mee-ca)
[name_u]Micah[/name_u] is actually very popular in my area.
I know 5 [name_u]Micah[/name_u]'s! (3 under 4)
I think it’s a lovely name. I’ve never heard of there being any spelling issues with it. Since it looks so similar to [name_u]Michael[/name_u], I think the MY beginning feels natural for most people.
Thanks again everyone. Starting to really love it! Does anyone have any ideas for a cool middle name to go with [name_u]Micah[/name_u]? I’d like to avoid any other biblical name if possible! We have a 3 syllable surname, so can be short!! Thanks.
I love [name_u]Micah[/name_u]! I find it so refreshing. It’s gentle but strong.
I have a friend whose toddler is [name_u]Micah[/name_u]. He DOES get called mee-cah all the time at places like doctors appointments and things. But it’s easy enough to correct, and it does have the easily accessible nickname [name_m]Mike[/name_m] if for some reason the kid hated [name_u]Micah[/name_u].
I think [name_u]Micah[/name_u] is a nice alternative to [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and I’ve only heard it pronounced with a long I. I have never been one who gets excited about this name because it’s pronounced the same as a “mica” which makes me think of geology and I hated that class! Anyways, it’s still a nice name and I can see a rough and tumble little boy with this name. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps
