What do you think of Talon?

I love nature names but so often I find them too hippyish or obvious. The name [name]Talon[/name] is really growing on me, I think it seems usable as people don’t automatically make the connection. What do you think?

Sorry, but honestly, I think it is terribly tacky. It is like naming your child claw.

Haha, I was wondering if someone was going to say something about claws.

I really like it! I think it is very fresh and will age well!

Yes, it is a bit claw-y. I think of birds of prey snatching mice and rabbits from fields :frowning: [name]How[/name] do you feel about [name]Talan[/name] or Talland?

I can see the appeal of [name]Talon[/name], but I can’t not think “claw” when I hear it. I actually had a manager named [name]Talon[/name] once, during a summer job while I was in college, and I remember hearing that mental record scratch sound effect when I was first introduced to him.

I immediately went to “the claw.”

People don’t automatically make the connection? Looks like the responses shot that theory, unfortunately. To me, it is most definitely obvious. Like naming your kid Feather, Scale, Whisker, Fang, Tusk.

What else is there to say about it? That’s what a talon IS!

I prefer sound-alike [name]Fallon[/name]. I know one, though she is female, and she wears it well.

Yeah, the only mental image [name]Talon[/name] gives me is a hawk swooping down out of the sky and snatching its prey. I don’t like it as a name. Sorry.

I knew a couple who named their baby this. I really dislike it; to me, it feels like another of those “trying too hard to be tough and manly” names.

There was a guy on [name]Laguna[/name] [name]Beach[/name] named [name]Talon[/name] so I think it’s usable

My first thought: Ouch!

[name]Talon[/name] is harsh sounding to me and seems a little on the tacky side. Sorry! I agree with yellow- [name]Fallon[/name] is much better and doesn’t sound like its trying too hard.

For the record it’s not a name I would ever actually use for my son, I just saw it used recently and the people I talked to in real life didn’t immediately think of birds of prey, so I figured I’d put it up for debate with other name-nerds like myself.

It reminds me of actual talons, or claws…and of that scene in [name]Napoleon[/name] Dynamite. Sorry!

Exactly this. It just makes me think, why did these people name their child after part of an eagle?!

Ooh, this too.

[name]Wolf[/name]. [name]Bear[/name]. [name]Talon[/name]. [name]Ridge[/name]. [name]Thorn[/name]. ‘My son is such a rugged individualist manly-man!’

No one said [name]Tiger[/name], [name]Bear[/name], [name]Fox[/name], and [name]Wolf[/name] were okay!

A girl I grew up with named one of her sons [name]Talon[/name] and every time I see him, I think of an eagle’s claw.

I do think of claws and birds of prey when I see/hear [name]Talon[/name]. But what’s wrong with that? Birds of prey are beautiful, intelligent and fascinating creatures. The sentiment that naming your child [name]Talon[/name] is to make a macho badass statement is silly to me; why is a creature that can think strategically and protect itself a bad thing? I think those are good features. And they’re affectionate and caring too. The same goes for some of the other animals mentioned above here, especially the wolf. I don’t see that as macho, wolves are pack animals, very sensitive, beautiful and family centred animals.

My friends have a really adorable dog named [name]Talon[/name]. I think it works better for them than it does for a baby, but it’s not “too out there” if you ask me. =]
