What do you think of the name Calathea?

Hello All!

I recently came across this name in a search for some rare beauties. Calathea is pronounced “[name]Kal[/name]-uh-THEE-a”. The name is of Greek origin and means “Basket”, but it is also the name of a genus of plants.

I think this name has a lot of nickname potential ([name]Cala[/name], [name]Callie[/name], [name]Thea[/name]) and could work well on someone born today. However, many have complained that it sounds too much like a disease.

Tell me what you think! Keep in mind that I am not pregnant nor planning on having children for a while. I just love discussing and collecting names.

Also, what would you use as a middle name for Calathea?

I don’t really like Calathea, but I do like aspects of it. It has lots of nice vowel sounds, which I like. It does have a lot of nickname potential, but that’s generally something I’ve started to avoid rather than seek out. My first thought was “calisthenics”. There’s just something about the way the name rolls off my tongue that doesn’t appeal to me.

I think it has potential to work as a name today, especially with other plant/flower names like Lily, Rose, Violet, Fern, etc.

Middle Names (Since it has 4 syllables, I think 1 or 2 syllable mn are best):
Calathea Florence
Calathea Jane
Calathea Louise
Calathea Mae
Calathea Nadine
Calathea Pearl
Calathea Erin
Calathea Mabel

I like that Calathea is a less known Greek name. I’m not huge on the meaning “Basket” though. However, I strongly prefer it over the more popular [name]Cassandra[/name]. I think [name]Calla[/name] or [name]Thea[/name] as a nn would be very cute and with a short mn this would be a nice option.

Calathea [name]Mae[/name] (as suggested in pp) is great
Calathea [name]Joy[/name]
Calathea [name]Faye[/name]
Calathea [name]Esme[/name]
Calathea [name]Isla[/name]
Calathea [name]Nye[/name]
