What do you think of the name Nero?

A woman at my Antenatal class and she’s about to have baby #3 and they are 100% going to call him [name_m]Nero[/name_m]. Now, I actually like the name [name_m]Nero[/name_m] if you ignore all the connotations, but I would never actually name a child that, I mean, it’s just cruel. I mean, I guess it’s kind of fitting, since there other son is named [name_m]Scipio[/name_m]. I still think it would be a definite no-no for me though.

But what do you guys think? Would you ever considering naming a child [name_m]Nero[/name_m]?

I think [name_m]Nero[/name_m] is more familiar and usable than [name_m]Scipio[/name_m]. At first glance, I thought it was [name_m]Scorpio[/name_m]. Lol [name_m]Nero[/name_m] is also on my long list, but I think it’s a guilty pleasure more than anything else.

The fact that is sounds so much like zero makes me dislike it more than anything else. Though I must admit, it could potentially be a unique and likeable name for a boy to wear.

I like the name. In Italian it’s the word for [name_m]Black[/name_m], so it has a dark quality to it (har har) but was also the name of en emperor, so for me it carries a little weight. I don’t think it’s a bad idea.

Absolutely not. It may have a cool sound, but I agree, it sounds like “zero” (but I love [name_u]Hero[/name_u] as a GP, so I don’t know why that would matter to me). I think my main issue was how terribly he treated Christians. I may not have a perfect understanding of history, but it was clear he had it out for the Christians at that time, and I wouldn’t want to honor that type of negativity and hate, no matter how cool the guy’s name might have been. I think it’d be really hard to wear, as well, but it does sort of have a cool sound. I do think that [name_m]Scipio[/name_m] and [name_m]Nero[/name_m] work pretty well together, though.

It’s the name of a friend’s dog, I can’t shake that long enough to appreciate it as a person’s name. Same deal with [name_m]Leo[/name_m], and a lot of people think that is a perfectly acceptable name for a child.

He could use the nn [name_u]Neo[/name_u], like the matrix. [name_m]Scipio[/name_m] is entirely new to me, how is it said?

He’s gonna love that when he starts learning about the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] emperors in school. Poor kid.

I really like it. [name_f]My[/name_f] main association is the chain of cafes in the UK

I know a little [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_m]Nemo[/name_m] which I always thought was adorable. Plus it used by Dickens before Disney. There was a little boy called Neon in the News recently which is okay on it’s own - but his sister was [name_f]Electra[/name_f] cringes. But I digress.

I do really like it, genuinely. The whole [name_m]Roman[/name_m] thing doesn’t bother me much.

Oh my, this is just too priceless isn’t it?

Being a [name_m]Christian[/name_m], I couldn’t do it–the emperor is a very bad association. The sound is cool, though, and with [name_m]Scipio[/name_m]–hm.

[name_m]Nero[/name_m] is a terrible name if you know the history behind it. [name_m]Nero[/name_m] was one of the worst leaders in the history of the world, it’s like naming your child Hitler.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! Christians during [name_m]Nero[/name_m]'s time were a rather dicey bunch…think what the barbaric [name_m]Christian[/name_m] mobs did to [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f], and the libraries at [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]…perhaps [name_m]Nero[/name_m] had good cause to persecute them.

I have a major soft spot for names that end with o. This would not be a fave just due to the history. But that aside I think it has a bit of edgy cool factor.

[name_m]Nero[/name_m] was a terrible, murderous, hateful leader who persecuted minority groups under his rule. Of course, so was [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]… hasn’t kept it off the popularity charts. I’m not a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] though. Some [name_m]Roman[/name_m] emperors seem to be seen as more usable… but all in all, not a very easy-going or pleasant bunch of guys you’d want to have around the house.

Including the ones with names I like.

As far as [name_m]Nero[/name_m] the name itself goes, I think of [name_m]Nero[/name_m] [name_m]Wolfe[/name_m], the fictional detective, and that’s sort of likable in an [name_m]Art[/name_m] Deco way. And I like the meaning “black” - I don’t know that I’d really use [name_m]Nero[/name_m] though.

I can’t even with the defense of [name_m]Nero[/name_m] I just read…

[name_m]Nero[/name_m] is an atrocious namesake. And I say ‘namesake’ because it’s such an uncommon name that it pretty much “belongs” to him. In the way that [name_m]Judas[/name_m] belongs to [name_m]Judas[/name_m] Iscariot. It’s different than [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. Those have pretty much always been popular, well used names…before and after horrible rulers. [name_m]Nero[/name_m] hasn’t. You’d be hard-pressed to find very many people won’t associate [name_m]Nero[/name_m] with [name_m]Nero[/name_m] [name_m]Germanicus[/name_m]. I don’t know if I would say it’s akin to naming your child Hitler or Stalin…more like naming him [name_m]Cain[/name_m] or Caligula. The problem is that historical documents for that time period aren’t 100% accurate, and some people still believe that what’s written about him is exaggerated. But regardless, he still wasn’t a nice person. One thing that most people hold in relative certainly is that he commonly snatched Christians up, staked them and burned them so that he could use the fire as a source of light in the evening. He killed his mother. Some believe he started the fire that practically burned [name_m]Rome[/name_m] to the ground in order to make way for his new development plans. And many believe him to have been the Antichrist. I personally wouldn’t want that type of connection with my child.

Plus he was one of the 6 demons in Exorcism of [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. And I’ll never be able to get that scene out of my head.

I think I’m in the minority here, but I think it sounds cool. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if people made the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] connection in their heads the first time they’d get over it as soon as they got to know the child. Hitler is too recent, I think, for it to be the same. [name_m]Nero[/name_m] was so far back that I think it works now.

It’s pronounced Sip-ee-o. When his mum told me that was his name, I had to get her to spell it out for me; I’d never heard it before either.

I also think [name_m]Scipio[/name_m] and [name_m]Nero[/name_m] go well together, and they are equally odd and are both famous Romans. But, you know, their older sister is named [name_f]Celia[/name_f]. It’s like; have you just lost your mind since having baby #1?

I actually really like the name [name_m]Nero[/name_m], but I too, would never name a child that. The connections would just be too much. It does go well with [name_m]Scipio[/name_m] though.

[name_m]Nero[/name_m] “sounds” nice but he was a cruel [name_m]Roman[/name_m] emperor and quite the madman so I wouldn’t even consider it. [name_m]Scipio[/name_m] was a leading politician and general so I guess they must be a fans of Ancient [name_m]Roman[/name_m] history.

Wow, that’s a pretty harsh statement, isn’t it? Would burning of [name_m]Rome[/name_m], adultery, incest, matricide, mass murder and torture be ok for you too? I didn’t live at the time but from what I’ve read about [name_m]Nero[/name_m] and his family, all of them were pretty bad seeds. While many religions have committed crimes over the years, I wouldn’t compare one person to a crowd with a mob mentality, would you? No religion “deserves” persecution in my opinion.
