What do you think of Venetia for a girl...and any nickname ideas appreciated

I have shortlisted [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] for a daughter…I am a big [name_f]Georgette[/name_f] Heyer fan (she’s probably my favourite author), but more importantly to me the name is timeless, lovely, elegant, feminine and unusual. Those are the elements I’m looking for in a girl’s name.

However, I realise [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] may be unusual to the point that many in the general populace may not have heard of it. Probably most Nameberries have heard of it, because after all we are here because we love names! But imagine if you’ve never seen this name before, do you think it’s easy to decipher the pronunciation from the spelling? (I pronounce it “[name_m]Ven[/name_m]-ee-sha”).

Can you imagine a [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] at every age? ([name_u]Baby[/name_u], little girl, teen, adult, elder)? I think, as much as I love a name it’s important it ages well with its carrier.

What are your impressions of the name, good and bad when you read it?

Also, do you have any good nickname suggestions? Nicknames are very important in my opinion.

Thanks for any help!

I think it’s really pretty and would love to meet a [name_f]Venetia[/name_f]! I love [name_f]Venice[/name_f], and [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s play, so those are positive associations for me. The sounds in [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] are on trend even though the name itself is unusual. I also love the possibility of [name_f]Nettie[/name_f] as a nickname.

I think it’s a great name! Beautiful, elegant and uncommon. Reminds me of [name_f]Verona[/name_f] or [name_f]Vernice[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] is pretty and agree that it fits current trends. I do slightly think of Venetian mini blinds, but that’s not bad. [name_f]Via[/name_f] or [name_f]Tia[/name_f] would be cute nns!

I picture [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] as a daydreamer who gets in trouble as a kid, but as an adult always has great ideas and thinks outside the box, so has a creative/inventive job. Maybe she is a bit whimsical or maybe she is overly practical and wants to make a better way to get things done.

Yes, yes, yes. I love [name_f]Venetia[/name_f]! I have [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] on my own long list, so I definitely think [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] is usable too. Romantic and very much underused.

I feel like [name_u]Vinnie[/name_u] would be the nickname.

I think [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] is perfectly usable. I prefer [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] myself, but [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] isn’t too difficult to pronounce and is somewhat familiar, so I think it’s fine. As for nns, I’d suggest:
[name_f]Nettie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ettie[/name_f]
[name_f]Via[/name_f] (Vee-uh)
V
[name_f]Ena[/name_f]/[name_f]Enna[/name_f] (Ee-nuh/Eh-nuh)
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]

I like the Italian pronunciation of [name_f]Venezia[/name_f], but I’m not keen on the sound of [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] in English. It reminds me of rather dated “-sha” names.

I agree that the connection with the oh-so-romantic ancient city of [name_f]Venice[/name_f] gives the name unique beauty and appeal. I am a musician so the Italian connection is great, and I love literature so the connection you mentioned with [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] is wonderful and one that I hadn’t thought of.

[name_f]Nettie[/name_f] is a gorgeous nickname. Thank you for your suggestion!

[name_f]Venetia[/name_f], Veronia, [name_f]Venice[/name_f], [name_f]Vernice[/name_f] - all are lovely to the ear. I totally agree with you!

Haha - venetian blinds - that made me smile. I’ve never made that connection. Sometimes these connections can depend on the culture and even age of the person who makes the connection. Venetian blinds aren’t really all that common here in Australia, especially in the last 25 years. There are much more modish options out there - they are totally out of style in my country, luckily!

Thanks for your beautiful picture of a future [name_f]Venetia[/name_f]. I want to meet the girl you described in real life, and I would be SUPER proud if she were my daughter!

Yay! Another fan! Thank you!!

Haha - that is a really cool and creative suggestion!!

Thank you for the feedback and the really lovely nickname suggestions. I hadn’t thought of [name_f]Ettie[/name_f], [name_f]Ena[/name_f], [name_f]Enna[/name_f] or [name_f]Evie[/name_f] before. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the feedback. I see your point, but it wouldn’t have occurred to me if you hadn’t told me of that connection. Luckily the -sha names you talk of are probably mostly African-American names from the '80’s to the 2000’s - such as [name_f]Keesha[/name_f], Myeisha, Dawnisha etc. Luckily I am an Australian and those type of names are really rare here and only familiar through American TV and film. So I don’t think it would have a lot of weight on my choice of [name_f]Venetia[/name_f].

In a similar way, I can see the -sha ending didn’t stop you from falling in love with “Anastasia”

I actually know a [name_f]Venetia[/name_f]. She pronounce it Veh-neh-TEE-ah, and goes by [name_f]Veta[/name_f] (VEH-tah). I find it lovely.
