What do you think of Yves (boy)?

What are your opinions on using Yves as a first name for a boy? It’s a legitimate francophone name but as it’s pronounced “Eve”, do you think it might cause problems in the English-speaking world?

I think it’s gorgeous :yellow_heart: There’s something very elegant yet understated about it! It stands out without being strange, and it’s just a very cool choice with its short, distinct sound. Obviously, it wouldn’t be as “easy to wear” as a very familiar [name_f]English[/name_f] name along the lines of [name_u]George[/name_u], but I don’t think it’d cause any serious issues. As long as you don’t mind strangers pronouncing it like “eyevs” and having to correct them! But plenty of people out there have names with unclear pronunciation, and I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

I absolutely love the idea of it but unfortunately I think it would be very hard to wear in an English-speaking country where it sounds identical to the name [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. It’s the only reason it’s not on my list, but if you live somewhere where you could get away with it I do think it’s lovely!

It’s gorgeous, classy , and makes me picture a little gentleman. Great choice!

[name_m]Yves[/name_m] is elegant and sophisticated, but gentle too - it’s got a fashionable feel to it. I think ‘Yves [name_u]Saint[/name_u] Laurent’ makes it more familiar, but it might still cause a pause

It took me a while to get used to it, but I really like it! There’s a man in leadership for the state office for my denomination named this; I think he’s originally from Switzerland. I had been aware of [name_m]Yves[/name_m] before he moved here; but I think I always waffled on whether the S was pronounced or how the Y was pronounced, and how feminine it sounded. I still like [name_f]Eve[/name_f] for a girl much more than [name_m]Yves[/name_m] for a boy… but now I like [name_m]Yves[/name_m] a lot too! It’s a really cool name. If I remember correctly it’s related to [name_m]Ivo[/name_m]? It took seeing this guy fairly regularly to change my mind, but now I would be super excited to meet a little baby [name_m]Yves[/name_m].

I can’t say from the perspective of someone who never encountered [name_m]Yves[/name_m] before they met this guy, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say his name wrong… which is encouraging, I guess? I’m sure you would have to be conscious of pronunciation corrections at the beginning, but once your circle is familiar with it, I think the day-to-day bits of living with the name wouldn’t be horrible. No worse than [name_m]Jacques[/name_m], anyway, and I’m sure there are plenty of [name_m]Jacques[/name_m] in the US.

ETA for two reasons: 1, I live in an area where there is virtually no [name_u]French[/name_u] influence at all, if that’s reassuring? And 2, I forgot about [name_m]Yves[/name_m] [name_u]Saint[/name_u] [name_m]Laurent[/name_m], I do think that helps with the usability of [name_m]Yves[/name_m]!

I love the name [name_m]Yves[/name_m]. It’s on my list for future boy names. But yeah, I agree with other users that it’ll get mispronounced a lot. [name_m]Even[/name_m] I have to stop my brain from reading it as “Eyevs.”
