What Do Your Characters Think Of Their Names?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] your characters like their names? [name_f]Do[/name_f] they dislike them? Why? What name would they prefer to have?

For example, [name_u]Rex[/name_u] Rover [name_u]Davis[/name_u] was named after the main character of a TV show his young parents liked. He is not thrilled by this and was constantly teased growing up. So, as an adult, he prefers to be called just [name_u]Davis[/name_u].

[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] chose their name; their old name didn’t match her identity well

[name_f]Ria[/name_f] doesn’t mind her name and likes the fact that it works in all the languages she speaks but she’d like to have a longer form as a legal name, like [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]

[name_m]Cas[/name_m] doesn’t like when people call her [name_m]Castle[/name_m] because it reminds her of being in trouble. she doesn’t really like it when [name_m]Viator[/name_m] calls her by it either, but she won’t admit it to herself.

[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] also doesn’t like when people use his full name, [name_u]Auberon[/name_u], but unlike [name_m]Cas[/name_m], he also recognizes that it doesn’t matter who calls him by it, he still dislikes it.

[name_u]Sage[/name_u] likes her first name, especially that it’s short, punchy, and unisex. she despises her middle name, [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], because it’s too frilly and feminine.

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] likes her first name, which feels soft but strong. she has similar feelings about [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], her middle name

RoboSteve (yes, that’s his real name) doesn’t like his name because it embodies what he is— a mechanical version of his creator, [name_m]Steve[/name_m]. He is very much an independent being, not a mere robotic copy, though. He might even end up changing his name, though I don’t know yet to what.

AJ hates his full name, [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] 8.0, because of the same reasons RoboSteve hates his. He too is a mechanical copy of another character, [name_m]Ajax[/name_m], though he was created by that character’s enemy. However, AJ comes to like the name that he goes by and keeps it.

[name_u]Ash[/name_u] and [name_u]Briar[/name_u] like their names because they have a specific pattern (nature fn + family mn), but [name_u]Ash[/name_u] especially thinks it’s kind of funny/weird because when people hear ‘ash’ they generally don’t think of the tree, they think of fire, and his first name isn’t technically [name_u]Ash[/name_u] either, it’s [name_u]Asher[/name_u], because [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_m]Jonothan[/name_m] thought it sounded better with his middle name of [name_u]William[/name_u]. [name_u]Briar[/name_u], for her part, really does like her name, because she likes how briars are pretty but sharp.

[name_u]Saylor[/name_u], from that same story, doesn’t feel particularly strongly about her name in general, but her mom calls her [name_u]Saylor[/name_u] [name_m]Swift[/name_m] because she’s a talented singer, which she doesn’t like, but has sort of grown resigned to over the years. One time [name_u]Ash[/name_u] called her [name_m]Say[/name_m], which she really liked, but he definitely didn’t notice that he said it and Saylor’s certainly not going to mention it.

[name_f]Aria[/name_f] is okay with her name. She’d like it to be more nicknameable (is that a word) though.
[name_f]Calla[/name_f] (potential nn Cal) doesn’t like her name; she thinks it doesn’t reflect her well and this is kind of a plot point.
[name_m]Theo[/name_m] (Theodore) really likes his name, it just seems very him.

In a different story:
[name_f]Wren[/name_f] likes the nature connotation her name has. Most of the other characters in that story aren’t very attached to their names as they haven’t really had to use them in quite a long time (for story reasons), but [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] absolutely hates her name and typically goes by [name_m]Jules[/name_m] instead. (Totally not me wanting her to have a specific last name that sounded better with [name_m]Jules[/name_m] than it did with [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. nervous laughter)

[name_m]Troy[/name_m] [name_m]Sanford[/name_m] hates his full name, [name_m]Liam[/name_m] [name_m]Troy[/name_m] [name_m]Sanford[/name_m] Jr., because he was named after his father who is a notorious criminal. He refuses to be called [name_m]Liam[/name_m] or [name_m]Junior[/name_m] (which his parents probably called him when he was little). He would rather not be called by his last name either, because people will assume that he’s related to his father. He just likes to be called [name_m]Troy[/name_m]. There’s no danger in that name.

[name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_m]Sanford[/name_m] likes both of her names, the one given by her adoptive parents, which is the one she goes by, and the one given by her birth parents, [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_f]Anabel[/name_f] [name_m]Baylor[/name_m]. She goes by [name_f]Emma[/name_f] because it’s the name she’s gone by her whole life and it feels more fitting than [name_f]Olivia[/name_f].

[name_f]Marcy[/name_f] LeProe loves her full name, [name_f]Marcella[/name_f] [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] LeProe, for a lot of reasons. Her parents are big fans of music and named her [name_f]Marcella[/name_f] after a favorite singer of theirs. Her middle name is after her paternal grandmother. Her nickname, aside from being short for [name_f]Marcella[/name_f], was originally given to her by her father, who she was very close to until he passed away.

Annarosa was a victim of a terrible crime so she associates her name with it. She goes by her surname, Bunnett (based on Bunny).

[name_f]Unice[/name_f] sort of likes her name but she hates when people share it, and she doesn’t like sharing it herself to strangers. People mostly call her [name_m]Ice[/name_m]. Her middles wouldn’t be mentioned much.

The one character with the long and confusing name which is pronounced zay-ELL-oo thinks his name is kind of girly. He doesn’t dislike it but he goes by Xaye.

[name_m]Boruta[/name_m] [name_m]Priestly[/name_m] if kind of indifferent towards his name. He is aware that it’s unusual bc he was named after a swamp demon. He dislikes that it connects him to his unholy heritage but doesn’t dwell on it too much.

Chernobog “Boggy” [name_m]Priestly[/name_m] think his name is pretty “metal” as he would say. He likes Chernobog but thinks Boggy is sort off putting but would never say that out loud bc his younger brother came up with it when he was little.

[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Francois finds his name to be too frilly, especially for his profession.

[name_f]Glynis[/name_f], [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] of [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] haven’t really thought about their names until humans started telling them that they were old lady names.

[name_m]Cassian[/name_m] [name_f]Morven[/name_f] is fine with his first name, although his middle name is a secret he hopes to take to his grave.

[name_m]Robin[/name_m] [name_m]Everett[/name_m] likes being called a little bird. He calls [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] ‘little goose’ (nobody quite knows why he chose ‘goose’) or ‘gosling’ and [name_m]Ash[/name_m] is nicknamed ‘little phoenix’. Rarely, though.

[name_m]Ashton[/name_m] Alitt chose his first name (for gender reasons) and ended up changing his surname (for megalomaniac dad reasons), but he didn’t change his middle name and never plans to.

Most of my characters don’t mind their names. [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] thinks her name is cool because she gets her nickname, [name_m]Ash[/name_m], out of it. And her middle name, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], is from her maternal great-grandmother.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] hates her first name because she was named after and by her absent mom, who she hates for abandoning them. She always goes by [name_f]Livvy[/name_f] (Olivia nn Livvy) and plans to change it to [name_f]Livvy[/name_f] legally when she grows up. Most of her friends don’t even know that her real name is [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is ok with her name, and she mostly goes by [name_f]Bee[/name_f].

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] is fine with her name. She was named [name_f]Rose[/name_f] after her mother, [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]. Some people used to call her [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], especially her deceased fiance, [name_m]Jones[/name_m] [name_m]Freeman[/name_m]. After [name_m]Jones[/name_m] passed away in a terrible accident, [name_f]Rose[/name_f] didn’t like being called [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]. She is at a point where she could tolerate it if someone did, but would rather people not.

[name_m]Roscoe[/name_m] [name_f]Noah[/name_f] [name_f]Everly[/name_f] doesn’t really have an opinion on his name.

[name_m]Keith[/name_m] [name_m]Beckett[/name_m] [name_m]Anders[/name_m] is totally happy with his name.

[name_m]Bertram[/name_m] [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m] [name_m]Rainier[/name_m] likes his first name, but finds his middle name to sound a bit too fancy.

[name_f]Devon[/name_f] “Spike” [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m] [name_f]Madison[/name_f] has always found his given name to be too soft and hates being called by it. He goes by [name_m]Spike[/name_m] because that is a name that screams trouble.

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] “Butch” [name_m]Norton[/name_m] [name_f]Madison[/name_f] actually loves his given name. He doesn’t like going by [name_m]Butch[/name_m], but [name_m]Spike[/name_m] insists on it.

Dang, I never really thought about this, but:

[name_f]Hailey[/name_f] [name_f]Madison[/name_f] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m] is a lot like me in this aspect. She doesn’t like the sound or style of her name, the popularity, or the spelling variations, but it does suit her personality well.

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] [name_m]Matthews[/name_m] (Hailey’s daughter) is alright with her name, but she prefers her middle name. She goes by [name_f]Abby[/name_f] because she hates [name_f]Abigail[/name_f].

[name_f]Kennedy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] Cunningham loves her name, except she feels like it’s way too long. (I mean, 22 letters is kind of long).

Ariannah [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Bell[/name_f] also loves her name, and it makes her feel very unique.

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anna[/name_f] Shen adores her name and the sound (and honestly, I adore it too).

[name_m]Esme[/name_m] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] Thorton really loves her name and the fact that she and her grandmother share the middle name [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. Her only complaint is that her initials are EMT (I didn’t realize that for awhile  )

[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] loves her new name, because it represents her new identity. She was born [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_m]Brennan[/name_m], named after her maternal aunt [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], who was hit by a car as a child. She had her abusive father’s last name, and her middle name was meant to match with her siblings [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] and [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f].

She picked [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], because it was something entirely her own while still connecting her to her siblings. [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] was to keep the connection to her aunt, which had been important to her mother. And finally, she picked her mother’s maiden name, as she was the parent [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] was close with.

She changed it, because [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_m]Brennan[/name_m] was a sad little girl who had lost everything and who everyone pitied. [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] is more than her past and is completely her own person.

[name_f]Sofie[/name_f] [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f] Palaway loves her names (Minus the fact her initials spell out sap, I did not realize that till I wrote all of the 1st book and thought oh well to late to change that.) Her first name is her mothers, who died during child birth, and by the time her mother knew she was pregnant her father was sick and died a few weeks later. She doesn't know much about her middle and last names, but she doesn't care.

[name_f]Sequoia[/name_f] is proud of her native american name because she her self is native american and [name_f]Sequoia[/name_f] trees are like her, tall and lean, with green eyes/ leaves and light brown skin, her twin brother Jistu on the other hand, hates his name because in means "trickster rabbit" (though he's one to talk because in the end he turns out to be evil and it shatters his sisters sanity for one book), and no one can say it.

[name_m]Lennox[/name_m] doesn't love his name but he doesn't hate it, he prefers to be called nex because it's more him, it's shorter, and [name_f]Sofie[/name_f] likes it, (hint: [name_f]Sofie[/name_f] ends up with nex in book 10) but then again nex is one of the last main charterers you meet so he tends to be annoyingly showy so...
