Hello!
I’ve posted this thread because I’ve been curious about whether other people get their names confused for a different name as often as I do.
For example, my name is [name_u]Haley[/name_u], which isn’t an uncommon name, yet I always get confused for a [name_f]Kayley[/name_f] or [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. I’ve even been called [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] and [name_f]Holly[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] weird! Another example would be how my sister, [name_u]Rory[/name_u], is always called [name_u]Laurie[/name_u].
What have you been called before?
My name is [name_f]Tiffani[/name_f]. And I swear I get called [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] more than anything, which is also my older sister’s name. She’s 13 years older than me too.
Other than [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], I get [name_f]Trinity[/name_f] a lot. I’ve also gotten [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] before, and [name_f]Brittany[/name_f].
We’ll see how people confuse [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] once I pick it up after graduation (one month to go).
On an unrelated note, I absolutely love your boys’ names and MGG is the absolute best ever.
I’ve had people read my name ([name_f]Rachel[/name_f]) as [name_f]Raquel[/name_f] or [name_f]Rochelle[/name_f] a few times. Those two names are ones that people looove to call me as nn’s too, which I honestly can’t stand. I’ve also gotten [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] a lot, and sometimes [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (must be the biblical association?). People will also spell it as [name_f]Rachael[/name_f] which I also hate but it’s not really a big deal.
I’m [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] and it’s unnerving how many people think my name is “[name_m]Darnell[/name_m]”. My family pronounces it more like [name_m]Den[/name_m]-EE-elle" vs the normal American “[name_m]DAN[/name_m]-yell”, so maybe that has something to do with it. Still… [name_m]Darnell[/name_m]??
When I was in school, I had one teacher who called me [name_f]Mary[/name_f], another who called me [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], and a third who called me…[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]. Mistaking [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is somewhat understandable, and if you mumble [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] plus my maiden name, I can kind of get how you could hear [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], but I have no idea where [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] came from!
But mostly people just assume my formal name is [name_f]Megan[/name_f] if they get introduced to me first as [name_f]Meg[/name_f], which is why I try to always introduce myself as [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] first. Once they know my name is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], then they can call me [name_f]Meg[/name_f] if they want!
My name isn’t hard to pronounce, but it’s uncommon. I get called [name_f]Christine[/name_f], [name_f]Kristin[/name_f], [name_f]Christina[/name_f], [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f], Kirstine, Kirstina, [name_f]Kristy[/name_f], [name_f]Kristal[/name_f], Kristanna and [name_f]Krista[/name_f]. And I respond to all of them.
Sometimes I get sick of it and ask them to call me a simple boys name like [name_m]Ethan[/name_m], [name_u]Chris[/name_u] or [name_m]Jakob[/name_m] and a lot of people end up calling me [name_u]Chris[/name_u] or just my nickname, [name_f]Kizzy[/name_f].
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]! Nope. It’s [name_f]Lauren[/name_f].
My name is also [name_u]Haley[/name_u] haha! I often get [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] or [name_f]Holly[/name_f], but the weirdest I’ve ever gotten was [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. I have no idea why, but someone actually heard Hay-lee as [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]?? LOL it was definitely strange.
My name is [name_f]Brigid[/name_f], and It’s apparently pronounced just like the [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] spelling, so people pronounce it with the d, or the other way, and honestly I just respond now a days. But, the weirdest thing I got was [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]. I was in 7th grade, and my english teacher always called me [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], and I knew that. At first I was like Who are you calling? Then I finally caught on, and I never corrected her. She was half crazy anyways.
My name is [name_f]Chelsee[/name_f] and I used to get [name_u]Kelsey[/name_u] and [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] all the time. Those I can understand. However, I have had not one but two people read my name and pronounce it [name_m]Che[/name_m]-leese. I am fairly certain they were not dyslexic, either.
My name is [name_u]Keely[/name_u], so I’ve heard it all…I answer to [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_u]Kelsey[/name_u], [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], [name_u]Caley[/name_u], [name_f]Callie[/name_f]…
I’ve gotten [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Chanel[/name_f], [name_f]Chantel[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f].
I’ve had [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. The biggest issue is with my surname (Which is [name_m]Landon[/name_m] but with an extra letter) I’ve had [name_u]London[/name_u] , [name_m]Landon[/name_m] , [name_m]Lawson[/name_m] and even [name_m]Lambert[/name_m].
[name_u]Madison[/name_u] gets turned into [name_u]Addison[/name_u] (fair; “I’m [name_u]Madison[/name_u]” does slur together), Mulan (? still don’t know how that happened), [name_u]Max[/name_u] (weird, but I guess I do mumble too much), or [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] (bleh; this is the one I hate the most).
Hum, my name is [name_f]Nicole[/name_f]. If it gets mistaken, it’s usually for [name_f]Michelle[/name_f]. (Which oddly enough was a name my parents were considering).
One of my clients called me either [name_f]Linda[/name_f], [name_f]Darlene[/name_f] or [name_f]Arlene[/name_f]. Dispite me correcting him several times, he still called me either [name_f]Linda[/name_f], [name_f]Arlene[/name_f] or [name_f]Darlene[/name_f]. He said in his country [name_f]Linda[/name_f] meant beautiful, which his wife confirmed. (He had an inappropriate crush on me). And I wasn’t sure but I may have heard [name_f]Arlene[/name_f] or [name_f]Darlene[/name_f] when he was saying darling, but I’m not sure.
That’s so funny! My name is also [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] and I often get [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] because that’s my sister’s name.
My nonno always spells my name [name_u]Nicola[/name_u] and my nonna would sometimes call me [name_f]Nicolina[/name_f] to Italian-ize my name a bit, I guess (doesn’t matter, I love that name ).
My last name sounds like a really common name (think [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], or [name_f]Emily[/name_f]), so I always get people calling me by my last name with the belief that it is my first name. I’ve also gotten [name_f]Meagan[/name_f] and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].
My name by birth is [name_f]Alisa[/name_f] “[name_u]Ali[/name_u]” and I’ve had people mistake me for:
[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] (most common)
[name_f]Alissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Alicia[/name_f] (pron Uh-lee-c-uh and Uh-lish-uh)
Also have gotten the spellings:
[name_u]Allie[/name_u]
[name_f]Alli[/name_f]
[name_f]Aly[/name_f]
[name_f]Ally[/name_f]
Not sure if it counts but I’ve been called the name of one stepsister, my biological sister, and my half-brother… The first one being from several teachers because we “look alike” and the other two being from my mother, which makes at least a little sense.
I’ve noticed that the only people who tend to get it right are typically college professors who were in the social science/literature department or people who are European.
My name is [name_f]Paula[/name_f]. I mainly get [name_f]Pauline[/name_f], followed by [name_f]Patricia[/name_f], [name_f]Pamela[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f] and [name_f]Cora[/name_f].
My name is [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] [ah-[name_m]LISH[/name_m]-ah] and I always get [ah-LEESH-ah] or [ah-[name_u]LISA[/name_u]]. I also get [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], and [name_f]Melissa[/name_f].
[name_f]Cerys[/name_f]! They are two different names people! [name_f]Carys[/name_f] has an ‘ah’ sound in it like cat whereas [name_f]Cerys[/name_f] has an air sound in it!
When I worked in call centre, customers used to think I said [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], [name_f]Carol[/name_f], [name_f]Karen[/name_f], [name_u]Paris[/name_u]. Annoying!
