Hello berries,
I am still thinking about [name_u]James[/name_u], my new favorite for a boy. I am toying with nicknames right now, here are the ones I consider:
[name_u]Jay[/name_u] - mostly after [name_u]Jay[/name_u] [name_m]Gatsby[/name_m], one of my favorite book characters. I believe it sounds modern enough and the bird reference is nice, I love birds. But I am really not a fan of [name_u]Jay[/name_u] Z, so do you think people will immediately think of him?
[name_m]Jamesie[/name_m] - I really adore this one. It’s so sweet and cosy but, I suppose, only suitable for a little child. Am I right?
[name_u]Jem[/name_u] - and this one remindes me of To Kill A Mockingbird, one more wonderful book. If I remember correctly, the character in it was called [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] but [name_u]Jem[/name_u] can naturally be a nickname for [name_u]James[/name_u] too.
[name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] - I just like the way it sounds. It’s quite a usual nickname though and I am not sure that’s what I want. Possible siblings names are [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] “[name_m]Oz[/name_m]” and [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] so [name_m]Jim[/name_m] would be too plain.
There are also [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m], [name_u]Jaime[/name_u], [name_m]Jimbo[/name_m] and [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] but I don’t really love them. I see [name_u]James[/name_u] can go without a nickname but in my family everyone has one so it’s a kind of tradition. I would somethimes use the full name.
What’s your favorite nickname for [name_u]James[/name_u] in general?
P.S. The middle names on the list are [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] so if you tell me which of these goes with [name_u]James[/name_u] best, I would be beyound grateful.
Thank you for your time!
My sister’s name is [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] and I often call her Jaim – like [name_u]James[/name_u] without the z sound at the end.
I like [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and [name_u]Jay[/name_u] a lot.
I’ve also heard of [name_u]Jaz[/name_u] being used as a nn for [name_u]James[/name_u] (like in [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m])
And if you use [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] or [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] as a mn you could go with JD or JP.
Personally I think [name_u]James[/name_u] is at it’s most dashing on its own, without a nickname. [name_u]Jay[/name_u] and [name_u]Jem[/name_u] are very cool though ([name_u]Jay[/name_u] is a fairly common name in its own right where I am, so I don’t think of [name_u]Jay[/name_u] Z at all.) My fave nickname isn’t particularly dashing, I just think it’s very sweet for a little boy: [name_m]Jam[/name_m]
As for middles, [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is my favourite. [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] is fine but, as much as I like [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], I don’t think the repeating ‘z’ sound in [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] sounds right.
(btw, [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] are fab combos :))
[name_u]Jem[/name_u], definitely. [name_u]Jay[/name_u] is alright, and [name_m]Jim[/name_m] is okay ([name_m]Jimmy[/name_m], meh) but I love [name_u]Jem[/name_u] : ) And [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] is my favorite middle, followed by [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m].
My favorite are [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and [name_u]Jay[/name_u] (in that order). I love the sound of [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]!
I like [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]/[name_m]Oz[/name_m] and [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] (what would her nn be?); it gives a really retro vibe that I get from the others already. I’ve really been hoping to meet a small [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] lately, but no luck.
I prefer just [name_u]James[/name_u], but [name_u]Jay[/name_u] if I have to choose one. [name_m]Jim[/name_m] and [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] are kind of boring. [name_u]Jem[/name_u] seems feminine to me. [name_m]Jamesie[/name_m] is too cutesy (I’d probably use it for a baby, but it would be more of a “pet name” than a “nickname”, if you know what I mean.) I like [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], but maybe that’s just because I prefer [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] in general to [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] or [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]. If you did use [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], though, he could be called JD.
[name_u]Jay[/name_u] and [name_u]Jem[/name_u] are my favorites. I love [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] as a combination!
I love [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and [name_u]Jay[/name_u] (I myself love the [name_m]Gatsby[/name_m] connection, it is one of my favorite novels). I also [name_u]Jemmy[/name_u] (like [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] but sweeter). I read in my history textbook that the USA statesman and president [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Madison[/name_u] was called “[name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_u]Jemmy[/name_u]” because he was only 5’4". I love it.
Not a fan of [name_m]Jamesie[/name_m] or [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] or [name_m]Jim[/name_m] or [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] or any of its variants. [name_m]Jamesie[/name_m] is too childish sounding to me, and [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] is somewhat feminine sounding, and [name_m]Jim[/name_m] sounds kind of old (its my dad’s name so…)
I really like [name_u]James[/name_u]! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see some love for it on Nameberry!
I like [name_u]Jay[/name_u] or [name_u]Jem[/name_u] best! Middle name wise, [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] or [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]… my top pick would be [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] (and you could make initials into a nickname, such as JD/JP)
I generally think that [name_u]James[/name_u] stands really nice on his own. It’s such a gentle, yet strong name. Quite like [name_u]Asa[/name_u] - they’re in the same “box” to me. In regards to the nicknames: [name_u]Jem[/name_u] is my favourite. It’s the perfect nickname for [name_u]James[/name_u] and I don’t really like any of the others.
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] would be so ravishing, I love it.
I like [name_u]James[/name_u] well on it’s own. If I used nicknames it would probably be either [name_u]Jem[/name_u] or [name_u]Jamie[/name_u]. I adore those two. They’re just so handsome. I know [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] is used a lot for girls, but well… I love it on both genders.
I like [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] - but not so much as [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]! It’s a handsome, wonderful name. [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] is meh, and I feel there’s something off about that combo. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like it.
I love the name [name_u]James[/name_u] and would probably use it just for the nicknames [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] and/or [name_u]Jem[/name_u]. So they’re my favourite.
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] is amazing! I love [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]. I love it.
[name_u]Jem[/name_u] is my definitely my favorite. I like [name_u]Jay[/name_u] as well and [name_u]Jamie[/name_u].
Thank you all very much for replies!
@kala_way: [name_u]Jaz[/name_u] is so fun! I really like it, thank you for the idea.
@charlieandper: I agree [name_m]Jam[/name_m] is very sweet. By the way, do you pronounce [name_m]Jam[/name_m] like [name_u]Jem[/name_u]? I pronounce them nearly the same way, to be honest, so spelling doesn’t make sense for me.
And I am really glad you like my combos, that’s so nice of you to say and pleasant for me to read.
@ruolan: I don’t have a nickname for [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] yet. I am not keen on [name_u]Billie[/name_u] or Syb so I am still thinking about it.
@thatkatryngirl: JD remindes me of TV series Scrubs, but I like it. Although I am leaning towards [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] a little bit.
@hardertobreathe: [name_u]Jemmy[/name_u] is cute, I haven’t thought of it. And as I said, [name_u]Jay[/name_u] is mostly after [name_m]Gatsby[/name_m].
@[name_f]Zelia[/name_f]: I agree with about what you say about [name_u]James[/name_u]. And it’s so dashing, like [name_m]Liam[/name_m], for example is a handsome name, but not so dashing. But [name_u]James[/name_u] is.
So, I think I have made up my mind and decided on [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] as a middle name. Still unsure about nicknames, I think [name_u]Jay[/name_u] and [name_m]Jam[/name_m] are front-runners.
